View Full Version : Lotro delayed its Expansion... why didn't DDO do the same?

Grosbeak07

Kate Paiz (remember her?), Executive Producer of Lotro, wrote a letter to the community that after extensive beta feedback, they have decided to delay their Riders of Rohan Expansion from September til October! Imagine that a game... where beta feedback actually did something.

Apparently they learned from the mess that happened in DDO when you plan on making a hard deadline, no matter what. If they had taken just a bit more time with MoTU and Update 15, there would be far less anger on the forums.

Just Saying... ;)

Coz GW2 is out in 4 days time, and for some reason the devs think that releasing buggy POS updates and new content before then will keep DDO afloat.

LotRO is the real MMO for Turbine. While DDO is popular, its not as popular as LotRO. Thats why that other game always seems to be slightly ahead in development technology, and why they are willing to risk delays in production in favor of quality.

With the new Hobbit movie coming out at the end of the year, its not hard to understand why LotRO is more present in the publics mind. I mean, when was the last time you heard from anyone who wasn't a D&D fan that even knew there were D&D movies?

IMO the combat in lotro is far too boring to keep me interested. I have a lifetime sub from buying the one off payment thing on half price and an account sat there doing nothing with over 10,000 points saved up and VIP for £75 ....

I've really tried getting into the game a lot of tikes, but I'm completely bored after just a few days of playing any of the classes.

Also given that DDO U14 was set in FR, they had another issue. Managment wanting to be "FIRST".

NWN by Cryptic ala Korean grindfest of Perfect World is due out... soon or is it out? I haven't cared because I wasn't about to touch it. If it were Cryptic alone I might have given it a shot. It did look pretty, but after watching the heavy hand of PW come into play with policies and their Store in CO I said screw it. I'm not touching it.

Historically we as a group have complained that Turbine has been LATE delivering updates to the game. DDO has a long history of delaying the release of Modules and Updates to the game. Out of the 24 updates to the game (Module 1 - Module 8, DDO:EU and Updates 1 - 15) how many were released on time. If you go beyond Update 14 and 15 ... The answer is not many, not that I can say with certainty at the moment. Heck the original game was delayed by 6 months (or was it more) and we still complained that it was released too soon.

DDO like MANY MMOs releases “buggy” code the difference here is the issues are multiplied by the fact the content is so much smaller is size than a traditional open landscape game. The current know issues of another game when printed on a standard 8 ½” by 11” sheet of paper takes 22 pages single spaced and that is just what that publisher admits too.

While I am not happy that Turbine releases “buggy” code it comes down to a simple question, do you want one update a year or six? Too me the frustration is more about the return of past bugs, solved more than once that keep rearing their head. If Turbine fixes that issue than I think many many people will be very happy.

I am going to disagree when you say that Turbine isn’t listening to the players on the Private Preview server or the Public Preview server. Turbine has publically admitted that the feedback delayed the new enhancement system, the raid for update 15 was pushed back, they have made changes to several Epic Destinies and changed drop rates of items, added handwraps to the Caught in the Web. They reworked Caught in the Web several times, even though I think I preferred the original “random” layout.

Do you really think that the release of GW2 or any other game is going to change the money earned by Turbine enough to matter at this point. If you are going to be the first to play GW2 then you have been in the beta program for months and getting ready for the live servers. Sure a few stragglers will try the game out but those that want to play the game are already playing it. Same goes for Mechwarrior Online. D&D: Neverwinter has been delayed so often people are wondering IF the license for the IP will expire before it is released.

NW has officially been delayed three times, once by Atari/Cryptic and twice by Perfect World/Cryptic. The Delay is currently about 2 years from the original release date. I wouldn't be shocked if it was delayed again.

Not that I am going to go looking but the post delaying the enhancments specifically stated that feedback from the Mournland players indicated issues with the "trees" and the determination was made to focus on Epic Destinies.

I believe you are mis-quoting the press-release from last week.
The additional content cited are "extra features", "including a robust PVP system" not what we call content as players.

For a game with such hype and claims that Millions upon Millions spent on development I was very disappointed in GW2 when I saw it.
Not saying it was a bad game just doesn't live up to the hype, think EQ2.

My apologies, but this is incorrect. You don't HAVE to play it for months to be first on live servers.

I bought GW2 last week (that's 4-5 days ago) and qualify for a headstart to begin playing in 2 days, 08 hrs and 38 min. They posted that they may open servers even by a few hrs earlier...

Meh. GW2 is just another in a long line of MMO's that people have claimed will kill DDO. Its not the first MMO to be set as a DDO killer since I started playing, and Its probably not the first since the game went live. To paraphrase another poster in a different thread, Turbine introduced Asheron's Call in 1999, and they are still in business. They must know what they are doing. Not many MMO's can say they have as many if not more paying customers 6 years after their release than they did in their first year.

Aren't the devs working on DDO also working on LotRO? So is it possible the sanfu with U14 and U15 actually caused the delay in LotRO by taking away resources?

I keep meaning to watch the second D&D movie. I hear its better than the one with the purple lipstick wizard.

Or it was delayed for a "free" competetive update for when NW is actually released...kinda like a card up their sleave :p Releasing it with the expansion would have blown there load a tad early given current projected release dates of competition. For those that believe turbine held off releasing content because it was too buggy...HAH!

Every LotRO expansion has been more or less buggy upon coming out so far. I remember once in Moria, my fast travel goat would literally fall off ledges and get stuck on walls, amongst other things.

Not as buggy as DDO, but delaying didn't help them much.

Just one more reason amoungst the multitude already there not for me to play.

Be that as it may, Cryptic thinks that anything that takes code is content. Costumes, new graphics, powers....

So they have released a ton of stuff.... and no change at all to what you can run. Think of the dead time of DDO when all people did was run Shroud. That is pretty much what CO is like only they'll offer you a new cosmetic look every month.

Some of which the only way you can get it is by lucky pulls in random store items called "grab bags".
Want that new ship in STO? Grab bag.
Cryptic doesn't have pay to win so much as gamble to win.

Also, this is standard MO for them too. And if follows suite of CO and STO, when it releases, it still won't be polished enough, but... just enough to be playable.

I had no problem with the release of U14 and U15. There were bugs none that stopped me from ejoying the new content. And everyone had a choice to stick with the old content if they wanted which still had a few bugs, but not many.

As they say "There is no test like production".
