View Full Version : Suggestion for a dedicated RP server

Just finished my weekly PnP group, and we all came up with a novel idea.

A server for role playing, not like people currently do in-game.

This would be a separate purchase for all players, and include an active DM!

One DM could effectively run several dungeons at once.

Have "featured" campaigns.

Have a character copy feature.

Remove all scaling, timers & alerts.

Have actual die rolls for initiative.

We came up with lots of ideas, but had one sticking point. Character alignment.

I'll post more after the 5 of us can agree on a few topics (good luck with that)

Please discuss, and add to the thread.

What percent does the current RP population make up
of the game?

Many of the suggestions would slow down game play,
and remove DDO's active combat system.

New LFM panel, need DM for GH quests .......

just some thoughts and questions.

Small, I'm sure.

Slow down game play? The server is for RP, not questing as normal. So game play speed has no bearing.

Great reply, + 1

As this would be a purchased server, you would have campaigns set by staff.

The lfm panel would show what was being run by the DM's

The server HAS to be a separate purchase to off-set the cost of establishing and running it.

I know the economics would be the major factor, I'm trying to get people that enjoy RP'ing discussing the possibilities.

I am in a RP guild and your idea is much like another posters thread D&D on DDO. It can already be done. we have /roll and non zerging quests helps. I dont think they will ever do what you are suggesting.

What you want is D&D you and your friends can play online. Take a look at RPtools. even wizard of the coast has a virtual tabletop. Now THAT is something you can control from monsters to die rolls to maps.

DDO is their version of an MMO and I dont see them ever changing the format Remember $$ talks since they went to the F2P P2P route.

Critics, meh.....

We've been using Virtual for 3 years, as one of our members is in DC, We use 2 other tools also.

You are missing the point imo.

A long time ago (lol) GM's would control the devs in Shroud. That and thru other events Turbine has hosted, the feature is already built into the game.

This is a separate, purchased server, run by turbine. Yes it would be costly. AND YES it would be awesome.

Instead of being a critic, and you have RP experience, why don't add something constructive.
Not trying to ruffle your feathers. I want more feedback and input, not criticism.

Critics huh?

That wasnt my goal. It seemed you were asking for something close to a virtual table top. (Having so much more control over things)I have no idea what you and your group do outside of this post or if you even knew about the virtual table top. (not flaming just making an observation) I also stated there was a post about D&D on DDO and it seems they were enjoying doing exactly(Or close to it) what you are suggesting within the current DDO.

My reasoning is Turbine is not just going to develop a separate server just for this as you suggested. Even if there are ppl willing to pay. Since going p2p model I dont think they will pass on a price that players would not flame over. considering that we might be in the minority atm. So Im not critizing your idea just pointing out that they are in it to make $$ not make more work for themselves unless there is a payout. (we all see the moan and groan threads about this and that bug)

(I just want to clarify my original post in case I wasnt clear. I am sorry if you took it the wrong way)

(reread 1st post) Now for something constructive....

Your idea does sound good. And yes awesomeness will abound! There are many things in DDO that are just for the $$ and would never fly in a real PnP game. rez cakes, tomes, meaningless character alignment (unless tied to a weapon) etc

There is a game called Ryzom that had (or has) player created instance. The instance had download of tools in which to create your module. The player would create the module as a whole and run it as a DM or post it and it runs much like a DDO instance. Now this I can see them doing since DDO is instanced. They must be using tools of some sort unless they are codeing everything from scratch.

Creating a tool set for us to use. Place walls, traps, monsters, npc, quest lvl, quest items within bounds they set.

EX: Kill timers, DM initiates rolls, DM inserts random monster/trap during session, said DM can run their module and any other module that has a check box for other dms to run but not change and can only add

Then your copy character idea will work. It will be copied into the player created instance that either the DM will run or set it to auto.

I did play one of these instances on that other game. Only drawback would be you would not able to keep any items. The devs didnt want players getting uber weapons outside of the player instance. They felt it would be an imbalance.

TADA! no need for another RP server just add to what they already have in place. How hard can it be for instances be up uploaded or queued for upload on certain days? We will be creating it on our pc seperate from turbine servers. Just like creating maps and tokens. Then they could charge us a small fee for the tools. Make it a VIP only addition. Even go as far as purchasing monster packs that we all know and love from the monster manual that arrent in game.

See I added to the discussion =)

I keep thinking, that would be a great way to have fun storytelling. I know that other games I have played online, people will join an RP server, and not be interested in Roleplaying, and do their best to ruin it for people that do. It makes targets out of people that want an involved story to be told. WHICH I THINK IS GREAT!!! Especially if it is original and told by another player.

...

and then there is Moon Guard on WoW.... I joined it thinking I would have a nice relaxing, and interesting story time session, only to find the first person PMing is wanting to smell my feet....

o.O

I would hate to think that would draw that crowd to DDO, cuz... really, there are a lot of kids here.

I mean I hate to sound like a negative nelly, but, the emote system isn't very sophisticated either, making the play a little less real and interactive for role playing.

but am I a fan of RPing!!1 OOOOMMMGG yes. I wish we did have a RP server, and maybe a community RP center or something on DDO.com. That would be great.
