Yet, another .NET issue

I just got my computer upgraded at my repair shop, never had an issue with them and always had great service. Now, I have 3.5 downloaded for my XP Home Professional (that is the OS they loaded back on due to a RAM/wipe issue I had). Now, I get the same error as everyone else stating that DDO needs .NET Framework v1.4322. Microsoft no longer carries it on the site. I did all the upgrades on my computer, including service packs for my framework... still the same message. My game is installed on one of my external drives and I have never had the issue just plugging it into another computer and just loading it right up. Currently I am waiting to hear back from my repair guy to see if he has the version needed backed up onto a **** at his shop. Until then, is there anything else I can try to resolve this issue on my own?

I tried all the places I used to download the 1.1 redistributable package to no avail. Not even Technet has it anymore. Microsoft has been quite through in eradicating it. I know the 2.x installer came with a compatibility stub for 1.1, but I don't know if that works with DDO. The only other source I might suggest would be your XP disc if it has SP3 slipstreamed. I know dotnetfx.exe used to reside in the Additional Components directory on that one. If you can find that and install it, Windows Update will do the rest.

There may be less reliable and possibly more torrenty ways of acquiring it, but that's your call.

Yeah. As far as the disk goes, my repair guy has all of that info. Sadly he is on a house call to set someones computer up right now. Once he gets back he should have it and should be able to e-mail it to me... but that is the thing, I have no clue if he kept it around. One would hope because he is the repair guy he would.
As far as my windows update... it doesn't even want to update my current .NET. Tried everything I could to go around it and get it to update it.

Yes, you need both .NET 1.1 and .NET SP1 ("the hotfix").

If that Cnet site doesn't have both I'm sure someone here will respond shortly, it's been mentioned several times on this forum.

If noone does I'll check back in a few hours after work and dig one out, but I'm sure they will.

I thought .NET 3.5 was supposed to be a rollup package for 1.1, 2, and 3. Guess not. Since Windows xp support is fading fast I'm not surprised to see this disappear. Hope Turbine is planning for this...

Thanks to Vordax, I was able to get both the v1.1 and the v1.1SP. Glad at least someone had the pack left on the internet. I think I will make a hard copy of both and save it so if someone else needs the zip e-mail it wont be forever lost. Thanks for the help guys... the correct files were finally found and installed!

I assure you, just because Microsoft may discontinue a product in no way means things will disappear anytime soon. You just may not find them on the official Microsoft site, although often you can, just as archives and not as "official updates."

And yes, Each "version" of .Net is separate. Welcome to Microsoft.

For many years I was -required- to use Microsoft tools for development. A great many of the limitations you see in applications are restrictions placed there by the manufacturer of the tool, who often has a vested financial interest in requiring the developer to use their and only their tools and may also have other competition based/profit magnifying intentions.

Often, the user/customer ends up blaming a software company for issues that are out of their control having been mandated by the manufacturer of the chosen tool, or of the operating system.

I'm a believer in the "right balance" of making money versus social good and/or user-developer convenience. Unfortunately, most of these major companies do not share my view.

(I wonder how long they held back printer-fax-copier-scanners to sell the most possible models of separate functions first?)

On Windows 8, .NET 3.5 is a rollup package for 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. The OS ships with .NET 4.5, which includes 4.0. It will prompt for the 3.5 installation if a program uses 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5.

On Windows 7, .NET 2.0 comes with the OS, it is not a separate packet. .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5 packages are available, which bring in additional versions of .NET.

On Windows 8, .NET 1.1 will warn that it is not supported.

On Windows 7, some people have had issues with .NET 1.1 install, and some have been unable to resolve those issues.

I too hope that Turbine will remove the requirement for .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 in the launcher, and move it to requiring .NET 2.0 only. This would remove a barrier between new players and the game.
