Raid gear = Red
Unequipable = Red
"experlative"...
We can do better than this right?
BTW forums are auto prompting to French...

But but but MadFloyd insisted that the UI was awful! This is so much... worse.
Agreed. The borders are dumb. If you want something to distinguish the icons, make the special items look special. Adding a border just confuses everyone, especially when there's no key.

Maybe if we could get a ui setting where we can set the border colors ourselves for the different types...
(I would set all mine to grey)

Maybe 'unequippable' should have the red-circle with the bend sinister, and 'not-proficient' should have a yellow-circle with the bend sinister.
It would have the added advantage of introducing more sinister elements to the game. :D

i would like the idea of being able to turn the border colours off.
then all the rainbow-colour-fans can live out their passions and keep the borders and whatever systematic plan might be behind all those colours, if there is a plan that is...
and you could have yours all grey and ignore the polychromatic mess that we have in our backpacks.

Hah!
You should have seen their first iteration on Beta if you haven't.
I'm partially colorblind, but even still that mess of brilliance and chaos blinded me with the light of a thousand suns and made figuring out what the actual ITEM was incredibly difficult.
It's MUCH better now, though I too would love the option to turn off all the extra border colors, as it doesn't help me at all, it actually detracts from the usability.
I care a lot more about being able to easily identify the item itself rather than some crazy color scheme someone dreamed up that failed utterly in it's purpose, which was to make identifying items EASIER.
/Signed to going back to non-messy, clearly identifiable icons.

I love this idea. I use custom colors for text and damage. If they do item borders as an icon overlay instead of an icon this is very doable.

They aren't necessarily "dumb", just not implemented entirely correctly (yet). They have their use, to distinguish the items type right off, and the current system does that very well. I know instantly if something is special or just random loot gen, I also know if something is "new new" as it will have a turquoise border. I still think it needs some work but its not really a bad thing to be able to tell what kind of item you just got is, of course it wouldn't be a bad thing to be able to color the border ourselves or disable them entirely (I like options).
I'm thinking a little more refinement and the borders will be just fine. Will everyone like them? No, probably not. Will a majority of new comers, vets, cas-bads and others find them useful? Probably so.

Red, yellow and green shouldn't be used for borders that indicate a vague category of where the item comes from. They are functional colors that tell you "unequippable", "not proficient" or "newly aquired."
The theory is that the new border colors were made to match some other games' colors to make new players from other games more comfortable with the UI...

Thanks for the language switch info; worked +1

The border colors serve no purpose but to make things harder to see. Something being raid or randomly generated is completely and totally meaningless. Maybe in a loot list or a chest, fine, but on my hotbars, **** off. Red means can't equip, period.

Please please please, at the very least, get rid of the red. I logged in after the update thinking I couldn't equip half my stuff. It serves ZERO purpose other than to be confusing and distracting. It does not help differentiate items at all.
I would also be happy with the ability to enable/disable borders and/or customizing colors ourselves.

Not to mention, it also messes with a custom UI settings.
I have a bright green border around equipped items and can no longer use my UI as I cannot tell whats equipped anymore!

The borders might actually be my least favorite U14/xpack change.
Although, to be fair, I hate all of the new icons too. I much prefer the drab old 'realism' style of icons to the new brightly colored 'looks like a painting on the wall of a tacky Mexican restaurant' style.

Guys guys, it's all simple:
You want to know the quality of the item? It's in the borders!
You want to know if you can use the item? It's in the borders!
You want to know if you're proficient with the item? It's in the borders!
You want to know which item is new? It's in the borders!
You want to know which item is equipped? It's in the borders!
How can anyone be confused by this?
[/sarcasm]
Seriously though, please give us the option to turn off rainbow mode. I'm still not getting used to this poor design choice.

On my screen equipped items have triangles pointing in from each side making it obvious is the equipped item.
Also non proficient items have a big exclamation mark and unusable items a big cross.
Helps me tell the difference.

The only benefit from the colored borders that I can tell is that Turbine has admitted that they consider greensteel to be raid loot.

Wow this is one of those times that I must be really lucky that I play with Very Low graphics. Borders are really clear to me and they actually make me smile.
Raid: Orange
Unequippable: Red with an X at the bottom
Named: Blue
Random or crafted: Green
New: Flashing green
Epic: Purple
Not Proficient: Yellow with a ! at the bottom
Sorry guys, but I'm afraid I'm not seeing what's so confusing about this.....
Edit: Just realized I didn't take into account colorblindness could confuse this issue a bit - if so maybe a different color scheme is warranted - but most of the comments on this don't mention it so I don't think that's the trouble people are having.

This - absolutely this.
It seems little thought was put into considering whether this would be a good fit for DO or not.

Clearly, the correct fix to this is to add a number of little dots in the icons to specify the type.

Nah, a complicated system of dots, dashes, the greek alphabet, and roman numerals - maybe even a lil latin too? lol

As far as I'm concerned, the only useful border would be one that showed if an item had a guild slot or not. If it's named or not, really doesn't matter.... actually, I take that back. Items you cannot equip should definitely be red, not all my gs haste clickies... And we absolutely need "new" item borders. All the rest is useless. Who cares if it has a "name" or if it's "epic"?

this.
DDO is not a game where there is a linear progression of items (for example, brighter color -> better).
The new color system makes things harder to be found in the hotbars and adds no value.
