My wife has a crafted spiritcraft shield that 6 days ago had absolute minimum level 16, and crafted on it was +9 enhancements for ML 17.

Today she logged on and the shield was unusable - absolute minimum level 20.

Was there a stealth change because I didn't notice this major change in the release notes (though I'm not perfect and might have missed it).

Anyone else had this happen? This is the second shield she lost - the previous one was due to the change to shard ML.

This is the closest possibility I see.

Crafting
Crafters will now get a larger portion of platinum back when deconstructing items; in some cases an amount equal to the value that would have been received from a vendor.

Epic level weapons that have been disjuncted for use in Cannith Crafting now properly have an Absolute Minimum Level of 20.

I think you might have hit on it - many thanks. and +1

I bought 2 spiritcraft light shields on the AH, one ML16 and one ML22.

On disjunction the first one was absolute minimum level 16, the second was absolute minimum level 20. The latter I guess was classed as epic level and had absolute minimum level adjusted accordingly.

So when getting items for crafting be careful in that some otherwise identical items have different absolute minimum levels.

Also check on items crafted before 14.1 because they might now be unusable

I would suspect that your ML 22 shield had double base shield bash damage.

They put all epic weapons to absolute min lvl 20 because of double base dmg.
