why would you need to?
it's just a quarterstaff that also does slashing damage
take improved critical: blunt

It does slashing and piercing damage. Not bludgeon. That is why I ask.

If you expand the base "Improved Critical: Type" feat in your feat list, it actually grants a bunch of "Improved Critical: Weapontype" feats. Bludgeon grants QStaff.

Feat categories for weapons are based off the base weapon, in this case a blunt weapon (quarterstaff). Yes, it's a little confusing the first time.

It is a common misconception that damage type has anythign to do with improved critical.

Improved Critical feats are, in actuality, just a bundle of sub-feats whose base weapon type matches the main feat e.g. Improved Critical Piercing is actually just a collection of Improved Critical: shortsword, light/heavy pick, rapier, dagger, etc.

The improved critical "type" is irrelevant, it is only the sub-feat that matters. In this case improved critical: Quarterstaff, which is a sub-feat of improved critical: bludgeoning.

Sidenote: Improved Crit: Bludgeoning also affects all natural weapons for druids, because "unarmed" is a Bludgeoning sub-feat. Additionally, weapon focus, weapon specialization and other feats/abilities that affect all of one "Type" of weapon damage use the same "Subfeat" rules.

Sunblade, despite having almost all of the characteristics of a bastard sword will only respond to Imp Crit: Pierce, because it is a shortsword.

Same deal here.

In DDO, feats that effect weapons, like Improved Crit Slash, Weapon Focus Thrown, depend entirely on the weapon type (like Long Sword or Heavy Mace) and not on the type of damage the weapon does.

Expanding the feat description or enhancment description will show a list of weapons that that feat/enhanncement applies to.

Look at the desrpiton of the weapon in question.
if the desription of the weapons says it is a Quarterstaff, than feat that effect QStaffs will affect it.

Quarter Staffs are listed under Improved Crit Bludgeoning. (so is unarmed btw, which includes all forms of unarmed uncluding animal form fighting.)
