I notice there's now armors that drop with higher base armor values. Can those come in mithral versions or are they their own thing? Mainly, I'm hoping for a better shield with little/no arcane spell failure for my bard.

Not for now. We can keep hoping they'll fix this oversight.

Pretty sure you still want Fanion (http://ddowiki.com/page/Fanion) until better shields come out/are generated. Haven't seen it after the update, but heard it got quite the buff.

The devs indicated that by the time the combat system was worked out, they didn't have time to consider the materials armors were made out of (except basic steel and leather).
It may be sorted in the future but there's no guarantee.

Fanion was a heavy shield with a base shield bonus of +2, totalling +6 when you add in the +4 enhancement bonus.
A spiritcraft heavy shield has a base shield bonus of +7 (!), which goes to +12 when you add a +5 enhancement shard. The -15% asf can be removed with a greater twilight shard, leaving the prefix open for actual crafting.

I hope they update Fanon for those of us who still have the old version....even when we bought it 3 months ago.
