View Full Version : Ranger Half Orc/Elf Explioter Builds

I just purchased the class and races bundles they offered on sale this past day or so.
So now......I have Half-Orc and H-Elf....and Monk to play with.....
Ummm...I am so spoiled right now with these Explioter Ranger type builds that I just cant bring myself to play anything else. I solo alot and love being able to do everything a dungeon has to offer. Very few classes can do that.
1- Not having to totally relay on a cleric.
2- Doing Traps/Locks
3- Some Self-Buffs
4- Decient DPS...if it takes me a few more swings to kill something..so be it...I'll press the mouse button a few more times. :)
5- Decient AC
For the Half Elf I want to use Rapiers. For the Half Orc....Im not sure. I wouldn't mind useing a Two Handed Weapons if there was a way to get all the above with some sort of Barb or Fighter type. Probably just end up using Scimtars or whatever I find.
So bottom line. I understand that these Races may not be the best choice for this build.

Please, no handwrap builds. One level of monk for the AC is fine.
I actually started to build them and stopped....well because I really wanted to hear some advice before I do so.

I don't see any reason half-elf can not fit the typical exploiter build. Although feats are tighter, meaning you can not get imp crit:ranged or power attack unless you switch out combat expertise for one. Also missing the human skill bonus means you may want to start with int at a 14 which takes away from other build points, but maybe with a +2 tome its not necessary.
I would recommend Barbarian for the dillatante feat. It brings +1con, +20hp, and some damage reduction which are all great things for the exploiter, although the monk has some +20% healing amp and +1wis.
The half-orc is harder, while the str is nice, I don't think I would choose it since you miss out on the human enhancements and the extra feats.

As a non-Human, 18/1/1-split you have 8 feats.
Four of them are eaten by Tempest Prereqs: Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, OTWF. The latter to qualify for Tempest III.
Furthermore, reasonable feats for a melee are Toughness, an Improved Critical (Slashing or Piercing) and Power Attack.
This leaves you with one spare feat which can either be spent on Kopesh Proficiency, Combat Expertise (like the original Exploiter, but now less popular) or Maximize (like some more modern Exploiter builds). Also IC: Ranged is entirely possible.
With the upcoming changes to the combat system, the future usefulness of both Power Attack and Combat Expertise is yet to be evaluated.

One thing Im not sure of though, say I do get a +2 INT tomb around 7th=8th level, when I apply it do I get all the skill points I missed out on for those first 8th levels or do the extra skill points start from then on?
Either way, missing a few can always be made up with Ranger Skill Boost Enhancement.
What starting stats would you begin with? Would you put 10 Wisdom and get a Owls Wis Ring or something?

Do you know of any other combo I could try that would do locks,traps, and heal? With a 1/2 Orc. I cant seem to find to much, but to be honest these forums are a bit overwhelming to search through.
I was going to for go the whole Kopesh thing...and was actually considering H.Picks with Imp Crit Piercing. Im going to build a 1/2 Orc reguardless the best I can, just I dont know the best I can so I figured I would ask.
Im really stuck on how to set my starting stats which is really what brought be to the forums. Dropping to a 14 con might be needed to make up for lack of skill and put into INT. I'll have ranger skill boost to help with the critical skills I'll use. If I can only do 80% of the traps so be it.
If I play him to 20th and just absolutly hate em, I'll TR into something else.
Any info you can provide would be very helpful. Thx.

I had fun with exploiters too, still have one but moved onto other type builds.
These builds do not have Ranger heal spell but can UMD heal wands and scrolls.
This is a build I made and is a lot of fun, similar to an exploiter. It is a variation of the monster build with 2 rogue instead of monk.
Read through the Monster thread, it will give you some insights.

Int bonuses are not retroactive regarding skill points so no, you wont get the skill points you missed

I have found I get almost everything Ranger has to offer at 15 level
I tried 5 levels of rogue for more sneak attack power and various other things...I was extremely disappointed with the whole trap parts thing... so....I am going to TR again anyhow...(it takes forever to make ONE worthwhile trap...where other classes get a trick they can use quite a bit more easily... traps make no sense to me in current game mechanics.)
When I was trying 5 levels of rogue, I was also looking at 5 levels of artificer instead...
I did not look much into other things, many other people have already.
I liked taking cleric dilli - it helped me use scrolls a bit faster than straight UMD for healing.
If your TR'ing it hardly matters...I found everything pretty easy. I could scroll heal as a backup healer, open any trap or locked chest in non-epic. When I was low on the DPS foodchain in the party...I used my bow for support more and used debuffing weapons for CC and went after casting mobs...etc.
I could solo all the content in the game also...but it isnt always enjoyable or a good time use. I did not do everything in elite however, never needed the experience and made better time solo on hard. I often would go back and do elite 4-5 levels over just for favor and extra xp, when I could solo it much faster.
I do not thing rapiers are great choice...but I do not know everything...that is a certainty.

Yea, those are some neat builds. I will probably try them when I get sick of what Im looking for.
I dont have support characters to buy all those tombs, heal wands/scrolls, and all the other stuff I see on there.
Which is really why I was asking. "If you had to build a Explioter using Helf/Horc ect...."
I figure once I get four of these builds all to 20th level I can combine their rescorces to build something high end like that.
That Kensi/Tempus looks really cool though...
