View Full Version : Piker's Fate... a History Lesson

The Reaver's Fate used to be my favorite raid. Even on Elite, it was trivial to solo with an at-level arcane or divine toon, so I used to put up an LFM accepting anyone and everyone... BYOH, and the devil take the hindmost.

When I was in a social mood and joined a group that took down all but cleric/divine, and/or put "need heals" I would politely excuse myself because I didn't want any of my friends to think I'd started to wuss out.

Had lots of fun with new people who presumed that because it was a raid, it must have X healers, Y DPS, and Z CC. I would put "BYOH, roll for role" in the LFM, and once we got started let everyone have a chance at "tanking" or solving the puzzle. While it's true that I didn't mind people piking, I tried to encourage folks to participate in more ways than simply running against the wall and making a sandwich while waiting to loot.

Then they beefed up his hit-points, unnerfed the ellies, and gave him a wicked Disintegrate on Elite. All those together took this from a raid that I ran every 3 days on multiple toons in PUGs just for the fun of it, to running it maybe once a month on all of my toons.

While I don't run it anymore (much), I do keep an eye on the LFM panel, and have seen a few people (or maybe one person with his alts) constantly referring to it as "The Piker's Fate". That's cool - it's still an easy raid for a full group, no reason why some of them couldn't pike.

The problem is that while they are calling it "The Piker's Fate", they have taken down all but cleric/fvs, and are saying "need heals".

***? Is it the Piker's Fate, or do you need to have multiple healers to keep you from wiping? I understand the need to have a funny nickname, but couldn't you go with something else... "Don't Fear the Reaver" perhaps?

Grow a pair, or stop mocking the raid, I don't care which. Please. It's just embarrassing.

Notice that this is non-Shroud drama on Sarlona :D

I remember piking there, and for me it was one of the most boring raids ever. After they changed it, it became one of the most interesting raids, and NOW I play it regularly with several toons. Sometimes just for the fun of it, with toons that don't need any loot from that raid. Recently I've noticed a trend for running elite Reaver's at level, and I always join those raids if I have any available character. Only one of them failed so far. Seems that Sarlona has balls ;)

It's fun now. Still probably the easiest raid at-level, but no longer a 'one level 14 solos it while 11 try to contribute'.

But if you just want to steamroll it, you can always use the 'Select Difficulty' feature of the game and pick something that isn't elite.

Common sense is not so common on Sarlona.

And to the OP, just another case of "I want to be cool like every one else so I'm gonna say the same stuff they say" but they just have no clue.

Heh. Group leaders like those are just asking to be trolled. A simple "afk, piking as instructed" when the raid starts, followed by /popcorn.

Sigh, I wish I had more time. :(

No doubt. It wasn't my intention to imply that Sarlona doesn't, just that some people don't seem to understand what "Piker's Fate" really means.

Not quite the point I was trying to make. Simply that if one feels that they need 3 divine "healers", maybe they shouldn't be telling the other 9 people to pike.

Aye.

I just got my level 15 cleric flagged for the raid yesterday. Was planning to do it at 16, but there's been so many of these type of LFMs that I decided to jump the gun.

Jumping the gun while levelling is something I've had to do a lot recently. The example you provided is very striking and sets off alarms with experienced players. I wish all bad pugs were as easy to spot as that one.

Cole Sear: I see bad pugs.
Malcolm Crowe: Bad pugs like, in quests? In raids?
Cole Sear: Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're bad pugs.
Malcolm Crowe: How often do you see them?
Cole Sear: All the time. They're everywhere.

Although I do agree with the OP, this raid has become more difficult and no longer requires the Label "Pikers Fate", I have to disagree with the difficulty factor.
