Breaking News!

Not all people is a native english speaker! Scientists confirm that there are other people who communicate in other languages with human beings just like you and me! Since they were born! Amazed witnesses can confirm that they are able to learn english via studying or experiencing travelling around the world where this language is properly spoken.

Anyway, in some countries, it is more difficult to learn pronunciation of the word and have an hearing comprehension as good as the reading comprehension. Especially when it is the first time you hear a specific word.

Especially when you hear only the voice and can't see the person you're speaking to.

Especially when the audio fades out.

Especially when the voice comes with music and sound effects.

Especially when audio can lag and get totally inaudible.

Respect other people who put some effort to learn your language, and put some effort talking a bit slower, repeating a word, or talking louder sometimes. The game experience will improve for all people with you.

Also, avoid saying things like "U TOTALLY DEAF MAN OR UBERSTUPIDZLololszzz" or, worse, swearing.

Thanks for reading. :)

As a person who has travelled throughout the world, I would say that you are absolutely right. People should have more respect for other people's culture and language. Diversity and a willingness to acceptance make us all better people.

I'm curious though. When you join groups do you tell them that your English is not great, but you want to try? If you announce it in the beginning, people may be more appreciative and understanding of you.

Thanks

B

Yes, i do.

And i gotta say most people is quite polite and try to help me understanding, too bad i can't seem to be heard sufficiently good with my current hardware, or else i'd talk more.

My OP is directed to the few becoming immediately rude if you don't catch a word, which often can lead to miss the phrase meaning.

And i also agree about the fact that having the opportunity to learn a bit of foreign cultures using a mmo is wonderful. Thanks for your opinion.

This is why I type 'are there any who can't hear me or prefer that I type?' because I'm very aware there are ESL or even non English speakers.

It is a priviledge the few times I've had the chance to play when I'm the only English speaker and I get a chance to see what it feels like on the other side. Go go guilds like DIV who are NOT English speaking and are awesome players in a game that is almost entirely set up in English. Lol. I couldn't even begin to imagine the reverse being top in a Japanese MMO with no Japanese.

As a native English speaker that has never left his home country and only learned enough french to pass the class (and promptly tried to forget all of the "enter the house" type verbs) I must say this:

I'm ashamed about how frequently I get my own language wrong, especially compared to some 10 year olds in Europe learning it as a second language.

I respect othe cultures and tgeur languages, and have even started speaking in french in voice chat when this one guy in the group couldn't properly understand english, but understood french, but the reverse needs to be true. You need to respect that sometimes people won't understand your accent, and allow them to you to repeat a word they may have missed trying to comprehend thriugh an accent they are not familiar with.

PS: I'm typing this from my ipod so spelling will suck.

You know what the ultimate irony is? When two people who speak different primary languages, but who share English as a second language, get together and can't understand each other they will resort to the time-honored American tactic of "talk louder and slower".

Case in point.

When I was flying for the air force over an unnamed country in 1999, I had passed some target coordinates over the radio to our HQ. The guy in the HQ, who was Italian, then attempted to pass the same coordinates over the radio to a French pilot who would then bomb the target. Neither of them spoke the other's language (which happens a lot in NATO) but they did share English. Took them 10 minutes to pass the information, and by the end, both were talking louder and slower. We spent the rest of that 16-hour sortie talking in fake French and Italian accents inside our airplane (which had a crew of 20+ people). Good times.

No need to feel sorry and i didn't want to attract anyone sympathy with this one.

Assuming what you say is true (we grouped and i troll the forums) how are those connected to the topic here? Unless you are trying to teach me how to troll...

Another thing, how do i get the right to complain? Gotta play/post more or spend more money on the game?

Since when one acquire the right to complain?

And the OP is not complaining at all by the way.

If you can understand this thank a teacher.
If its in english thank a military serviceman.
Thanks to them we dont all have to speak german.

That being said i dont care what country you come from or what your primary language is i prefer a international playerbase.Diversity and different outlooks more often than not make for a far more enjoyable gaming experience.Respect or lack of it is dependant on the person(and age it seems) not the nationality.

Did you know that as any forum discussion goes on eventually the probability of the mention of either Hitler or some form of Naziism reaches a probability of 1.

See? There it is...

I completely understand your frustrations with intolerant people regarding language.

HOWEVER

It is because of those few who do not speak or understand any English at all, but join groups for difficult content and make no attempt to alert people to their communication difficulties, that some players are less-friendly towards the non-English speakers.

At the very bare minimum you would expect such people to use an online translator (there are hundreds of them afterall) to put a simple 'I do not understand English please bear with me' in their bio or in party chat. If I were playing on a German/Spanish/Korean/etc server then it is what I would do just to try and help others be aware of the concern.
If someone in my group did this, I would bring up a translator of my own, just to try and help them out with basic instructions for what we are doing. Courtesy promotes courtesy.

Those who don't even bother with such simple efforts to integrate themselves frankly deserve the abuse they receive in return, when their actions cause party wipes and other misfortunes that affect other people's fun.

Yes, your culture, country and language deserve respect just as much as any other. This does not mean you are excused when your inabilities ruin other people's playing. Do something about it and people will respect YOU as well as where you come from. :)

Meh, if you join a group and give people **** for not speaking English fluently then you're being a ****. If you put up an lfm and ask for people to understand spoken English then that is a completely different situation. Not sure to what the OP is referring to but there are a few scenarios either way.

Try the (female) half elf taunt emote, seems to communicate effectively enough for most situations where sign language is called for.

Add to that sticking an 'o' on the end of words and you have the Brits guide to universal language when abroad!

As an English player (and southern english, from the royal counties! By jove tally ho old chap Windsor Eton & Ascot long live the old gel, what!) one of the funny things i enjoyed moving from the old European servers to the US (and now only) ones was finding that i could frequently understand the Danish/German/Polish/Czech/Swiss players speaking with English as a second (or 3rd, or 4th) language better than some Americans who were actually speaking English... and fair play & much respect to them, I personally have virtually no skill in languages other than English, besides being able to pronouce some restaurant food items correctly.. a little better than the usual English approach of pronouncing it loudly & slowly in English while pointing :)

Its just one of those things that many Americans have trouble understanding accents... not trying to be insulting, its simply a matter of being a younger country & rather more separated from the rest of the world geographically (as well as being such a big place other interactions simply arent necessary & dont happen so much), whereas Europeans have so many different languages in such (relatively) close proximity we tend - apart from us English people, who "just cant understand johnny foreigner, what!" :) - to have a better ear for it when the words aren't pronounced quite as we would do it ourselves... Can't speak for other European countries but in Britain, there are so many local accents experts can often tell what individual village a person comes from, let alone what general region - though in some areas, I think this can be somewhat supplemented by counting thumbs, taking account of sloping foreheads etc & seeing how much Burberry & jewellery they're wearing.

Personally I love being able to encounter players from various different countries, and always enjoy hearing new accents, terms & phrases.. as well as, in some situations, some really inventive new cursewords when things don't go as smoothly :)

Toodle pip! :D

Lol. That's a dumb theory. :)

I guess it is true but you could say that about anything. If any conversation goes on long enough someone will mention asparagus.

OP, you are right. People should be tolerant about the language barrier. To be honest most of the people in DDO are good and the minority you don't want to know anyway so boo to them.

If ever you are in a party and you have a communication error just say. Be honest about it and just say that English isn't your first language.

I was born and raised in the US and even I have problems understanding some stuff.
But on a funny note. I have 2 friends both Swedish we had a Yahoo voice chat going one started talking Swedish to the other. Poor guy told the one talking Swedish to shut up and speak English he could understand him better that way. So OP I do understand but many don't see things from all sides.
