most monks without the right gear cant obtain a very good umd score, as most monks dont also put points into cha at all, but if you have extra points it doesnt hurt...

but your first monk dont bother...because if you have access to Helf you can just go cleric dilly for heal scrolls!

Kukan-do uses your charisma mod for saves. So, you'll probably have some cha items. You'll have just about as much umd as most non-SP'ers.

I have some toons with it, and some without it. If you think you'll be using it, go for it. If not, don't.

I don't have it on my monk and don't miss it.

If you go light monk you dont really need UMD for anything; you have plenty of built in healing options, ki-based powers that replicate the most critical restorative magics, and can even raise dead.

The only two things missing that I often use UMD for are the ability to use the insanely handy fire shield scrolls (which there are clickys and gear procs for) and teleport (theres one clicky and the dragonmark if your human)

the UMD "sweet spot" is 35 (no-fail Raise Dead). Its pretty easy to get a sustainable score into the 20s with basic gear and common buffs like GH, but getting close to that 35 you're looking at pots, swapping gear (like a GS item with +6 exceptional CHA skills), and short-duration buffs like the +5 for 15 secs from Moment of Clarity light finisher

CAN it be done? if you have the gear to back it up, yes. But you can likely live without it, and I'd rather put the skill points into something more useful.
