Monk is definitely one of the more unique classes in this game. It's essentially a class that, while it has its own flavor and playstyle, can easily be hybrided with other playstyles that give it not only somewhat different gameplay, but also unique flavor.
(And as several tabletop players can tell you, flavor is king)
While I'm not interested in building a monk splash or a splash /w monk, I am actually interested in seeing some of the more unique things done with Monk.
One thing I'm aware of is WOWO's modern take on the Exploiter, a 12 Ranger/6 Monk/2 Rogue (Did I get that right?) build. I'm not going to deny that while it doesn't really suit a ranger mood, it does make for an interesting monk-like character on its own.
I actually did manage to figure out a way to justify that in-character (though it required thinking of it from a monk perspective rather than a ranger perspective). It is essentially a monk that is one with nature, including its dog-eat-dog ways. And as nature is cunning, so is the Exploiter, so it learns to disable traps and open locks. (One could also look at it as a Ranger that follows its own philosophy in the same way monks follow theirs, essentially becoming an unarmed ranger that attacks with the fury of an animal, or something like that)
Another interesting one is the 12 Fighter/8? Monk one (or was it 12 Monk, 8 Fighter?). A fighter who is focused on turning his entire body into a lethal weapon, choosing to dwell and meditate on martial prowess itself. Eventually, he becomes so in tune with his body, that he can actually name his fists "Leeroy" and "Jenkins"... or in other words, he becomes an Unarmed-Focused Kensai :P
Actually, that last one is interesting. I think I'll roll one of those up XD
