View Full Version : Druids make 5; Class Options for melee and specialist?

With the introduction of the Artificer, specialists finally obtained four classes, giving all three types of class four options. However, the Druid's inclusion offsets the balance, giving spell casters a fifth, and likely very powerful class. This leaves melee with four relatively old classes, one of which is very underpowered, specialist with three old, one underpowered, and one new, possibly over powered, classes. Hopefully this will be rectified. So, my fellow forumites, which melee and specialist classes would you like to see in the coming years?

swashbuckler, scout ... oh wait ... that are two specialist classes xD ... tbh ... can't think of any melee class i'd be looking forward to ... maybe psychic warrior ... but isn't that one a specialist too? =/ ... but there would be lots of other stuff i'd like to see:

.) class variants
.) devotion feats
.) generally more feats
.) domains
.) specialized wizards (for those who don't know: specialized wizards get more spell slots for their chosen school, no bonus to DC/CL)
.) animal companion / paladin horse
.) familiars
.) skilltricks
.) more weapons
.) and lots of other stuff

Swashbuckler would be a good choice for a Melee class. It would bring the option of Dex based fighters back to the game. Throw in the Duelist as a PrE and it could make for a very interesting class.

Knight could also have some interesting mechanics with their various challenges.

For specialist, that one is tougher. Scout is a nice class but most of their abilities are movement based and that type of combat does not really exist in DDO IMO.

Beguiler or Duskblade could be options for another specialist class but both would take some major coding I would think.

I really don't think the game needs more classes. We need more PrE options to specialize the existing classes (which appears to be what they're doing).

1. Hexblade
2. Hexblade
3. Hexblade!

If Hexblade ever came out I would exclusively play Hexblades.
I could see this being implemented with an aura similar to the FvS AoV line, and attacks that do magical effects on vorpal strikes - available through enhancements.

Curse on Vorpal, Disease on Vorpal, etc. It'd be awful fun :)

A Knight would be fun if they gave it neat buffs, but otherwise it seems like a Paladin knock off.
Same goes for Warlord.

Swashbuckler would be insane if they went full genius DPS. But I'd rather play a Hexblade.

For Specialists, a Scout would be good - and then we'd have 3 Nature classes (Ranger, Druid, Scout).

Did I mention Hexblades?

If druid is five,
then the devil is six,
and if the devil is six
then God is seven!!!

The thing is that label 'specialist' doesn't mean anything. Rogue and Ranger are melee/weapon-using classes; Bard is... complicated - can feel more caster-like or melee-like depending on build; Artificer is spellcaster. Don't really see anything that unifies them, except high number of skill points per level - which doesn't mean much for Bard and Ranger. 'Specialist' category doesn't make much sense.

The thing is that label 'specialist' doesn't mean anything.

It serves the purpose of suggesting the capabilities of a class to a player new to the class/game. Rogues are specialists in that they can specialize a bit better than say a barbarian. Barbarians are generally limited to being tanks and DPS. I can't remember seeing a Barbarian back away from the rest of the group, pull out scrolls/wands, and attempt to play backup healer for the party. Saying rangers are melee-using classes also doesn't do them much justice as ranged DPS isn't all that bad unless you're completely obsessed with DPS.

Tempest rangers have about the same balance of melee and utility as a Paladin does.

While doing a Paladin life on my FvS, I've solohealed several at-level elites - Offering of Blood and Ritual Sacrifice spring to mind. Most of that healing came from Torc-fueled spellpoints.

while I somehow understand that they split the melee classes into melee and specialist (else the long melee list might be confusing for newbies), I never really understood why paladin is no specialist =/ (guess the melee list would have been too short in comparison to the specialist list ... but still^^)

They split them arbitrarily due some changes they made in the creation UI a while back... at one time they fit all class selection on one screen... later they split them into sections as such.

The funny thing be the way they use "Specialist" as a term... a smattering of everything is not "specialized". Almost should be the other way around...

My family doctor may send me to a specialist. i.e. Sure a rogue can heal using umd with a scroll... but not like a Cleric, so the Cleric is a Specialist in such. Barb "Specialized" in melee a Ranger is more "Generic".

Honestly, who cares?

The split it arbitrary, most of the melees and specialists could be swapped from list to list and it would still make as much sense as it does right now-aka very little.

Hell druid could go under any of the 3 categories. As could bard, arti, fvs, etc.

I vote Hexblade (or another arcane warrior type) for the 5th warrior and some kind of psionic class for the 5th specialist class.

Hexblade would fill the arcane warrior role and steal market share from players of another online game where people like being on the dark side. Also we can pretend they are anti-paladins. Give them cool pres like Ghost-faced Killer or Spellsword and they could be a top seller.

Specialists seem to have unique abilities or play styles, e.g. Mechanical Pets (Artificer), Massive Damage when without aggro (Rogue), and Songs (Bard). So maybe Psionics would fit well in this category.

Why are Rangers specialists? My guess is because they get 6 skill points per level. Maybe Rangers should be moved to Warriors and two new specialists should be added instead.

hmm maybe they will just simply add another section istead of making it the fifth spell caster

i mean like

melee
spell
specialist
druid XD

.

Ghost-faced Killer Builds -> full of win

Paladin: How did you do that?
Hexblade: I'm a Ghost Face Killer. I own everything.

marshal - if leadership is implemented and doesn't eat a party slot - for melee

duskblade for specialist - i like their spell list more, and they don't have the non-good alignment restriction
