Ok so imagine you are playing another game besides DDO, you really dont like it, thinking of trying out some other game or whatever... ok so you come across this ad (which I have now come across on YouTube, as well as many other mmo fansites/websites completely unrelated to DDO)
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/629/ddoad.png
Does this ad really make you want to try DDO? Eh, if it were me, not really. No info about the game and already asking me to buy something for in game bonuses? Kind of abstract.
If I came across this ad, if I wanted it to convince me to play a new MMO I would have it really be unique, like have some compelling statistic that makes the game sound different from other games such as: "The only MMO that has over 218 (and counting!) dungeon quests with difficulty levels to match you play style, whether it be Casual or EPIC!"
The numbers are wrong, but thats the idea. Its just an example, could also probably a million other things that are more convincing then "Pre purchase for in game bonuses now". I dont know, something I just came across that struck me.

The ad might be targeted at current and former DDO players, like you.

This.
You probably don't realise exactly how much your habits, likes and dislikes are tracked across the net. Look up doubleclick. Then look at how many sites implement their tracking tags. Then realise there are quite a few more companies do this. Then become extremely paranoid for a while :)

The imge of Lolth might appeal to those who like "darker" games - or just find Drow "cool", in general. At least if they manage to recognize Lolth from the picture.
It has a reason, I'm sure, that she is placed in the center of this ad. It's a typical eyecatcher.

Doubleclick, various google services, adtrack, adclick... I used to block them in my hosts file but I've forgotten what most of them are since i switched my main browser to Firefox with the NoScript and adblock extensions. Browsing is a LOT faster and safer on my system because of it.
.
For sites i trust there are whitelist controls available which allow scripts and ads.

I think that's a thing only male gamers would be interested in. And lesbians. And no, not the inhabitants of the same-named island ... ;)

Agreed. Firefox and adblocker should be standard by now. You should look into them.

Other browsers also have adblock. If you want to surf fast, try something else. FFX used to be a great browser, but now it's too bloated and slow.

It doesn't bother me, but I'm looking into waterfox which is supposed to run faster on 64-systems. Then again, I still vividly remember dial-up ca. 1995 and waiting 15 minutes for the image file to finish loading. :)

Pretty much this.^
The ads for attracting new players are the "In other mmos you fight broccoli" , "You fight beholders" and theres also one with Velah in it if I remember correctly.

Hopefully, though, you whitelist sites that you frequent and gain benefit from, though. Keeping in mind that ads are the primary (only in some cases) sources of revenue for those sites to pay for time creating things, updating things and hosting things for other people ;)

I did that. For a while. Then the ads got more and more annoying to the point that certain sites got unusable without an adblocker. Now I block every ad I come across.
I didn't start that war, but I did end it. In my browser at least.

Hah. :) Nah, I fully understand why people block ads -- especially with the rash of sites that still do pop-overs and lightbox style ads. It's sadly better safe than sorry in most cases.

It kind of looks Baldurs Gate'ish, which alone could be enough of a reason for me to pay a visit. And im sure lots of target audience knows what Baldurs Gate is/was.
