Has there been a list of all of the Easter Eggs and Puns people have found in DDO? I've only found one thread so far mentioning the name of a Rakshasa in Let Sleeping Dust Lie. There's of course Mentau the Fleshmaker.

The reason I ask is that I just discovered one today that was new to me: Xy'zzy, the boss in Hound of Xoriat is also the password used in what is likely the original computer game Adventure. XYZZY was entered at the beginning of the game to transport the player into the caves bypassing much of the initial stages of the game.

If there's already a thread, I'd be happy to drop this there, otherwise maybe we should make a comprehensive list as they are discovered.

Running with the devils Quest in the vale .... Van Halen song.

In undermine, running trying to save yourself from a giant boulder (Raiders of the lost Ark) :p

The divine item sets of Hound and VoD.... Ann Velsing? (mentions Ann Velsing was a famous undead and vampire hunter so its obviously a Van Hellsing reference)

There is an NPC in Caverns of Koromor named Axelrod Gunnerson which is very similar to a Magic: The Gathering card named Axelrod Gunnarson from the Legends expansion. The Legends expansion is widely known to have been based on a long running PnP D&D campaign played by the designer of the set.

Running with the devils.... Van Halen song.

and Rainbow in the Dark is a Dio song.

Ghosts of Perdition is a (heavy/hard rock) song as well, but I don't know which was named first.

ARN-01D in Made to Order

I think Valdus in the Dead Shall Rise is a reference to the Farscape villian Maldus (Could be coincidence though) But, the similarities between the stories of their lairs is suspicious.

You utter the words “Come with me if you want to live.” (Now, it’s both a Terminator and Chuck reference.) in the quest “The Bookbinder Rescue”.

Kobolds are full of pop culture references.

a couple were mentioned, but the ddowiki has trivia on various pages...

on the page for the dust quest in the vale:

Trivia
Several of the Vale quest names are references to song names from ~80s hard rock/heavy metal bands:
"Running with the Devils" is the first track from Van Halen's 1978 "Van Halen" album.
"Rainbow in the Dark" is a track and a single from Ronnie James Dio's 1982 "Holy Diver" album.
"Let Sleeping Dust Lie" is a bit more obscure but most likely a reference to a track from Michael Schenker Group's 1981 album "MSG". The track is titled ""Let Sleeping Dogs Lie"
One of the mini bosses names is "Kkomglol", When you first hear the DM announce his name it doesn't sound unusual... But break it up and it reads: kk-omg-lol - common netspeak meaning "Okay oh my god I'm laughing out loud".

also, the corpses in part 1 of the shroud are the bodies of the player characters from the old "gauntlet" series.

The red-named scorpion in Ataraxia's Haven is named Schenker, the name of the lead singer of the band The Scorpions.

The Scorpion's lead singer is Klaus Meine, Schenker is the surname of the guitar players Rudolph and Michael.

The red-named scorpion in Ataraxia's Haven is named Schenker, the name of the lead singer of the band The Scorpions.

Rudolph Schenker is the guitar player of the Scorps, not the singer(well...he does sing backup). Also, his brother Michael was the lead guitar player of the Scorps when he was 16 but he hasn't played for the Scorps in years. Michael's claim to fame is being the lead guitar player of UFO.

In Wiz King the Boss says "I don't want to die. I'm a god, why can't I live on?" or some variation of that. This is a reference to the song Powerslave from Iron Maiden.

It is clear that at one time DDO employed someone who was a huge metal head. LOL!!!

Got some more to add:

In The Weapon's Shipment the Planescaller replies to the Pit Fiend who appears: Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational Battle Titan. A reference to the Emperor saying much the same thing to Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi when he reveals that the Death Star is in fact operational.

Also in The Weapon's Shipment, the Pit Fiend's response to this is: Why didn't anyone tell me the mortals had one of these things? A reference to the Joker's annoyed reaction to Batman stealing his ballons in the 1989 Batman movie.

In Reaver's Reach there are 4 kobolds dancing in a corner and if you click on them they say some weird little phrase. There are 4 of these phrases in all, and if you put them in the right order you get: Bah weep Grah nah weep ni ni bong. Which is the Universal Greeting from the old animated Transformers movie!

In the tavern near the market entrance in House Deneith are the 4 questgivers for the Depths series. They are named Keane d'Deneith, Scholes of Vedykar, Giggs Elorathi and Neville (I forget the rest of his name lol). They are a homage to Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville, all legendary players for the English Premier League football team: Manchester United.

The kobolds in the second part of STK will sometimes say "Get hand off me, you dirty Ape!"

The kobold and ogre bosses in Seigebreaker are named Brinky and Major Pain who have the following conversation:

Brinky: 'AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!'
Pain: 'AAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!'
Brinky: 'Ow.'
Pain: 'Hey, that's my middle name: Ow!'
Brinky: 'Major Danger Ow Pain, really?'
Pain: 'Special Parents. Don't want to talk about it.'

Brinky: 'Same thing we do every day pain! Take over the world!'

Rush is my absolute favorite band, bar none. They're just ahead of Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden in my personal favorites list. I was just saying what most people think Geddy's early singing was like. And in fairness, he seems to agree, as he avoids that style in their modern stuff.

I quite agree here. I've heard covers of Rush by "better" singers like James LaBrie of Dream Theater, and it seemed to me that the cleaner vocals actually hurt the song.

I'd still pay large sums to get Rush to cover Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Iron Maiden to cover Xanadu, though.

Part 4 reminds me of Star Castle.

You have the big guy in the middle who occasionally sends out little stars that float towards you (the blades), and then once the shields are down (the shields aren't really represented except after the first round with the gnolls), he blasts out a huge fireball shot (Delayed blast fireball).

I think Part 3 is supposed to represent an old classic video game as well, but can't place what it might be, other than just a lights out hand-held LED game.

the bucket in the quest "siegebreaker", once filled with "the unmentionable" (iirc) becomes named "Bucket of Destiny".

it's not really quite an easter egg or a pun, but... i figure it fits the general theme of the thread :)

I would add that "detritus" is also a word in the English language, and it is consistent with both Pratchett's troll naming patterns and DDO's earth elemental naming patterns.

Pratchet gives many of his trolls names that relate to earthy stuff (rocks, minerals, debris): Bluejohn, Chrysoprase, Brick, Morraine (Moraine), Flint.

Landslide was an earth elemental boss in The Depths of Discord long before Ataraxia's Haven came out.

I'm sure some of the devs have read Pratchett, and I would guess Detritus is probably named after Sergeant Detritus. It's worth noting the other connection, though.

Everything out there in the Vale has some reference to metal/rock music... why would this one dungeon not have some reference?

And if they called it Coal Chamber, the players would expect lots of coal in there.

Not really an easter egg, but ... There are a few NPCs with the names of "Bauerdatter" around there, one is the famous very first quest giver (well, usually, at least) of/on Korthos Island after the "introduction quest".

The word "bauer" means in German language simply "farmer, although an (hardly ever) interpretation as "builder" is possible, too. The word "datter" means nothing in German language, the only point towards is the reflexive verb "verdattert sein" ... very rough translation would be "to be dattered". http://dict.leo.org offers the following words as translations of "verdattert" : "to be befuddled", "to be fuddled", "to be fazed", "to be in a dither". It even offers the regular verb "verdattern", of which I haven't heard so far (read: no-one in my environment uses it [as a regular verb].
As a reslt, Kaja Bauerdatter could be [very roughly] translated as "Kaja Farmerfuddler" or so. ;)

On Korthos Island there is also the guy called Jacob Drexelhand. The German verb "drechseln" is pronounced exactly like this part "drexel", and the verb "Drechseln" means, according to dict.leo.org "woodturning" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodturning
As a result, Jacob Drexelhand could be translated as "Jacob Woodturnerhand", so to say. Sounds a bit uneven in my ears.

That's him. He was infamous on these boards for his love of PvP, and wildly unpopular suggestions, often related to PvP (like, nerfing Arcane Archers because they're "overpowered" in PvP). Some thought he was simply a forum troll. There was some controversy over his extremely negative Rep, and how he appeared to suffer no ill effects from it, raising questions about the purpose of the Rep system. He left, came back under a new name, but now has been gone again for while.

although the etymology of many of the npc names in DDO is interesting, i don't think they were meant to have too much meaning.

if the npcs getting attacked by orcs out in the cerulean hills were all named jack bauer (i.e. the obvious pop reference to 24 and the fact that they are farmers) then i can see them as a little tongue-in-cheek.

generally in america, many of these european names are a dime a dozen. little meaning, however, is associated with them.

Yes, but being a European myself, I alwass find it fascinating when I find out out the hertages / meaning of American names based on European Settlers ... Like Stephen Spielberg, for example (my favouite example). His name would literally be translated as "Playhill" or "Playmountain".

English-language names are hardly ever translated into German language, by he way. If I see a dwarf called "Firebeard", then this name means nothing to me - unless I translate it. Similar to Drexelhand to English-speaking people. Or Bauerdatter. Or Spielberg.

that's funny because my mother used a few yiddish words when i was young since she grew up in brooklyn and spiel was one of them.

i was under the impression that berg meant a fortification of sorts. but that would make sense as many were on hills or mountains for the geographic security it would render.

was under the impression that berg meant a fortification of sorts. but that would make sense as many were on hills or mountains for the geographic security it would render.

A Burg, as far as I know it from Germany, is often built on hills and mountains. That obviously gives it an advantage over enemies attacking the Burg.
The word "burg" can sometimes be used for fortifications as well, usually, because a Burg often *is* some sort of an fortification (on a mountain or hill).

i remember when i was young and first realized many names actually meant something like an ancestors occupation or area of settlement. (since that's generally not the goal for namesakes in america)

Yes. Some names just don't make much sense. Especially nowadays, assuming their names have become somewhat distorted throught the centuries. And some names just sound plain weird.

I do know, however, that there are a lot of (at least bigger) town names from the U.S. that mirror town names from Europe. I know of a few towns, for example, in the U.S. which have the same names as some German towns - or areas.

The Shroud is an homage to classic video games: Part 1 is Gauntlet - complete with portal destruction (which spawn monsters), and part 2 is an homage to Pac-Man - 4 corners wtih altars that grant life, and ghosts that return to the center.

In Lord of Eyes, as the stone creatures all advance on the Lord of Madness, if you're observant, you'll see a medusa and a beholder having a staring contest!

part 4 is asteroids, and part 5 is centipede, not sure about part 3 but i am sure its a reference to something. the clue is in the movement of the blades.

It's because the "area" mentioned. "DID" actually exist before Korthos village did.
They reworked the old beginner Harbor quests when they added Korthos.

I don't remember what the original DM text said, but they reworded it for Korthos, and I thought their choice of words was funny, and probably intended as a joke.

Actually if you read the description closely, and listen to the boy's conversation. The two thieves stole the magic items and then the Thief backstabbed the Thief-Acrobat! :D

So I guess this is the explanation for the backstabbed Thief Acrobat in the Missing chain - part 3 I believe. There's one at the end of one of the side tunnels. Always wondered why that was there.

part 4 is asteroids, and part 5 is centipede, not sure about part 3 but i am sure its a reference to something. the clue is in the movement of the blades.

Ok, what? How on earth do you get Asteroids and Centipede for Shroud 4/5 ?? I fail to see how either Shroud 4 or 5 could have any video game parallel. They are basically just big empty open rooms.

Abbot: the mini games are references to old games, platformers in general i think and asteroids. watch the pattern of the the disapearing platforms.. its an old and rather famous cheat code.

Now, one could make an argument that ice in the Abbot is Frogger, and Asteroids is,well, Asteroids. Not sure what Goggles would be. Are you suggesting the pattern is UUDDLRLRBA-start? I thought it was a random pattern.

ok leme explain.

shroud part 4:

imagine you are harry.

now imagine there are adventureres swarming all around you, and all you can do is throw rocks at them, the blades circleing in are just like in asteroids where the roids used to spiral in to you.

harry warping in and out as the roids circle in is just as if he either lost a life or the time ran out and he got to the next lvl.

just put your self in harrys perspective and you will see why its asteroids.

Shroud part 5:

we rarely see this these days but if you take long enough to kill hary blades appear, they follow a distincty pattern of movement - exactly like centipede - imagine the lines of blades are just like the sections of the centipedes body.

just like in centipede if you strike the middle of the line it detaches and now the 2 lines split off in seperate directions. of course in ddo its the centipede of blades that strikes you ;)

let me attempt a diagram:

[] [] [] []

_____
|
<____|

[] |---| [] [] |---| []

EDIT: formatting of diagram di not work.. grrr.
It could also be argued that its representative of space invaders, but as the lines split if you get struck by blades im fairly sure its supposed to be centipede.

I have no idea why people say part 3 is frogger, id love to hear what im missing there (unless its sarcasm because of jumping into the pool all the time)

they're talking about the part where you have to run around the outside to get to the various rooms and blades (which are kinda like cars) come running down the hallways, but don't cover the entire thing. as in frogger, where you try to avoid the trucks etc, you try to avoid the blades.

personally, i suspect it was just someone trying to add something to do when you were going from room to room, and since they had blades in various other parts they decided to just put them there, but i can somewhat see where they're coming from.

Nah. Minsc and Boo. Totally. :p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minsc

they're the same.

there are many variations of the giant space hamster used in spelljammer. one of them, and yes, it actually is in the monstrous compendium entry (and yes, there actually is a monstrous compendium entry) is the miniature giant space hamster, which is what Minsc claims boo is (and truthfully, i can't say that i can conceive of a method of proving him wrong, and it wouldn't be the only spelljammer reference in baldur's gate, so it probably is in fact a genuine miniature giant space hamster and not just a cheap imitation).

the illithid are one of the main races in the spelljammer setting, having at one point had a large empire that spanned multiple spheres. an illithid from the spelljammer setting would almost definitely have had contact with tinker gnomes (another fairly common race in spelljammer), and quite likely as a result with their giant space hamsters as well (standard giant space hamsters are used to power certain gnomish spelljamming ships, by running in giant hamster wheels, naturally. you just have to hope that the gnomes don't "improve" the hamsters too much...)

Im surprised i didnt mention this at first since it was the 2nd easter egg i ever found in the game.Minos Legens is a reference to Minos the king of Crete at ancient times in greek.the myth says there was a large labirynth(maze) under his palace where at its center lived a terrible monster named Minotaur (Mino from Minos.the very first minotaur from where the dnd minotaurs originated).Minos legens says that it belonged to a minotaur lord.So..the name Minos+minotaur...easy to understand.
2nd reference i found mutch later is at Von 2 (prisoner of mind) where there is a maze with minotaur enemys inside.another obvious reference to Minos+minotaurs+labyrinth

In the tavern near the market entrance in House Deneith are the 4 questgivers for the Depths series. They are named Keane d'Deneith, Scholes of Vedykar, Giggs Elorathi and Neville (I forget the rest of his name lol). They are a homage to Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville, all legendary players for the English Premier League football team: Manchester United.

another tid-bit pointed out to me by a friend: Manchester United plays in Old Trafford Stadium. this stadium is nicknamed "the Theatre of Dreams". i'm sure that sounds painfully familiar to those of us who have been farming PLIS like nuts the past few days!

lol

I think the concept of "easter egg" and "pun" has escaped some of the participants in this thread. :P

Yeah, I think what we've actually done here is create a thread of easter eggs, puns and pop culture references. I get a kick out of this stuff so I say keep 'em coming.

Speaking of which, I saw another one last night. In VON4 some of the warforged chant "one of us... one of us..." which is probably a reference to the 1932 movie 'Freaks'.

and Rainbow in the Dark is a Dio song.

Ghosts of Perdition is a (heavy/hard rock) song as well, but I don't know which was named first.

Nobody's mentioned the hirelings:

Byron Scoutsword: Iron Byron (golf club testing machine used by USGA) - inspired this post.
Grommisk Axehead (??? Grummish? can't place this one).
Frenzy: DDO reference
Rage: another DDO reference
Arnal Swarts: Lots of Arnold references in DDO. Hopefully inspired by Conan.
Club : Presumably the description "Do you have tickets to the club show?" is the joke
Alphar Fairwood: In light of Byron, I suspect a golf reference.
Brigita Hammersong: ??? Judging from the Vale, I suspect that these are obvious to the headbanger.
Anthem: Anthem is used a lot where bards are concerned. Since the Rush song is explicitly reference elsewhere...
Full Metal: Presumably full metal jacket. Hopefully he can break DR.
Veil (WF rogue): I thought Veil was an elf sorceress (VON3)?

On second thought, the first few hirelings seemed to be full of references, then they gave up. Can anybody place the rest?

A stretch? Meaning?

In LOTRO, Kipps Is in the quest "Crate and Barrel". Kipps is also in Kipps the Story of a Simple Soul, by H. G. Wells. "Old Kipps never beat his mat! Preferring to let sleeping dust lie."

Didn't see this either: the hireling vendor for level 14-16 in the markeplace is called Crimson Annja, a play on Red Sonja (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sonja)

Inquisitor Gnomon. we first see him telling us to slay what turns out to be innocent Sovereign Host people. then he turns up later in Lords of Dust.

if you say his name out loud (silent G like gnome), it sounds like no-mon. no man. he is no man. he's a rakshasa. well played Turbine. well played

The gnomon is the part of the sundial that casts the shadow, I always read it that he was the only part of the silver flame that cast a shadow rather then spread light or soemthing ...

theres actually some eberron lore to this: there is something called "The Shadow in the Flame" that most believe refers to the Demon overlord imprisoned within the Silver Flame itself

Specifically, the Demon Lord Bal Shalor. He was imprisoned when the Paladin Tira Minon sacrificed herself to become the embodiment of the Silver Flame itself.

Speaking of the Silver Flame, most people I've spoken to in game never caught on to this either.

If I were to as you when the moon symbol on the shrines meant you would probably say "rest". Validating it as moon equals night equals sleep time equals rest. But if asked about the flame, you would drawn a blank or joked MMOs are hell. So why fire for resurrection?

Well, the old alchemical symbol for silver is a crescent moon. The shrines are in fact stamped as "Silver Flame".

Sort of an implied ownership really, as if there wasn't enough propaganda for them already.

the arguement could also be made that they chose a "flame" symbol for res shrines from the "pheonix rising from the flame" angle of things

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but Roskilde (Frost giant mini boss in Prey on the Hunter) is the name of a city in Denmakr, not tto far from Copenhagen.
Also the fire elemental rare in Orchard is named Firenze, Italian name of the city of Florence, but this is not a big mistery :)
