This.
Sadly.

They talked about it in a interview on the day MoTU was annouced, so hunt that down in ur interest in more details.

Basicly you collect silly pets (some ingame, but most are store only), put them in your "stable" and can call them out to impress ur cat when ur high on cocopuffs.

or something

I knew I should have kept away from using Pokemon names for my toon builds and on the Forums...

Still... If it's F2C (Free to Collect) I don't mind wasting some time after I'm done TR'ing... :D

^This, and new things to do are always good. Some pets from the game is a time sink and pets in the shop are money for Turbine.

Besides, I always wanted to give my pale master a gauth (mini-beholder) as a pet, even if is only for show and not an actual familiar :P

+1 to you!

The best pets are, most likely, DDO store only. Also, I think there could have been better things done with the inventory than this (for example, a means to organize items in an inventory to filter by: weapons, accessories, armors, shields, rune arms, etc.)

Kind of neat. I like the idea of cosmetic pets we can collect and store on our person without taking up actual inventory space.

Pets more than likely share a lot of code with Artificer dogs, and Druid animal companions, so it probably didn't cost much effort to implement. Pets primary purpose is to make money. Either through direct sales or indirect sales of packs, e.g. the mini-Titan pet from the Titan raid.

If you don't want to spend the money that is fine, but I am sure you won't mind the effect of the money others spend on the game. If my wife still played I would need to hide my CC's because she loves pets, she has a whole stable full of them in WoW.

In addition to money it will attract the people that like to "collect" things like that. DDO also needs to add an achievement system IMO, additional reasons to attract and keep people is always beneficial.

Mad posted before that they have been doing some hiring, probably in preparation for the expansion. I'm sure the extra hands will make up for it. Plus, they are proably similar in code to hirelings and summons, who are about as useful as a non functioning pet half the time anyway. :D

Looks to me like a generic familiar/mount sort of thing.

Remember, we are getting "pets" soon.

Looks like we are going to be able to teach them to do things. Such as open doors or the like. Aka tricks.

Looks like it has "pack mule" bags as well (gear),

and the storage for the various pets we could have (stable).

Your failure is that fluff sells. Fluff sells a lot more than power gaming. This fluff can help pay the way for more content which is what you want.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is a way to test out some elements of the pet coding before druids are released. Nothing generates better data than thousands of players using the tech, and keeping them purely cosmetic at this stage means that any buggy behavior is (hopefully) unlikely to interfere with actual gameplay.

It actually strikes me as a pretty smart way to crowdsource bug detection and make some money along the way.

Now get in mah Pokeball!!

hmmmm, the fact that they called this a stable makes me wonder if we will see some love for the paladin in the form of a mount?

Yes I know this is purely cosmetic at the moment but the layout of that new UI does strike me like it will have some direct link to how, in pen and paper, you could actually teach animals "tricks and purposes" via the animal handling skill.

bring on the companions, familiars and other goodies !!!

Great. That's all we need to add to the cacophony of annoying clanking of dogs, animal sounds of people swapping out different stat buffs, swinging their weapons to just make noise and casting endless spells all over the place in public for no good reason (especially standing at the bank window; I cannot figure this one out for the life of me) we have now. I may just have to run on mute from now on.

If they can be trained to do any of the following it will be a massive improvement to player quest time. I'll take a Kobold!

Box Breaking: Your pet will auto Break non-explosive breakables within 20 ft of your character.
Kobold hate big boxes!

Trap Spotting: Your pet will warn you of potentially dangerous Hidden objects/monsters.
No, Aiieee! Don't go that way, it bad.

Trap Searching: Your pet will auto Search out hidden boxes and passages.
Kobold will find shinies!

Door Opening: Your pet will open doors that you approach.
Master want to go that way? Okz.

Stone Collecting: Your pet will carry soul stones to the last shrine passed in quest.
Masters freind Die! Me help. / Aiieeee!! Master die! Run Away! Run Away!

Collectable Grabbing: Your pet will pic up any collectable with 20 ft of you character.
Shinies!

I'm a bit split about the cosmetic only pets. I understand that its good idea to generate money, but I'd hate if they generated lag while contributing just flavor to the game. That is unless they are just static pets that sit on your shoulder (lame!).

As a minimum, cosmetic pets should be able to activate pressure plates. Yes, I'd like to see them be able to pull levers and switches or activate non-stat runes also, but it doesn't sound like we'll be getting that with these pets.

As for tricks, it would be nice if they had something like Intimidate or Bluff to grab aggro or distract. Put it on a long timer, like 5 or 10 minutes so it can't be abused, since I'm assuming the cosmetic pets have no hit points and don't interfere with mobs. I'm thinking of things like the ferrets from the movie Beastmaster and other such things were a small animal would distract someone so the hero could ambush, sneak, etc.

Would not surprise me at all. I woudn't be surprised if the Taken Cookie and the item that turns you into a Kobold in challenges is a live test of the druid form tech. They used cookies to test the Druid call lightning storm spell out and artificer dogs apparently use some of the druid pet tech. Good live tests by thousands of players.

I want a pet hordo, it runs ahead and "warns" you of traps, and when enemies approach it transforms into a "defensive mode" that closely resembles a soulstone. This would give turbine a way to test both pet coding and transformation coding with one object.

I also want a pet cube. full sized. with spots. a different amount of spots on each side. no more than six spots on a side though. I want to name it Damage. It should have ooze guard too.
