Mine happened last night in the Fens.
I was just, ya know, mindin my own business, runnin around, killin stuff with my lvl 7 monk, (who up until this point, I was convinced was unstoppable) when I decide it would be a good idea to try to take on a boss with about 4 mobs nearby...
My stupid hire just stood there, watching me get torn to shreds, until she too was brought down by a rancid horde of Fens creatures as I recovered not once, but twice, only to be dog-piled each time.
Third time's the charm I suppose, cause they killed me moar deader'n heck on my third and final mauling.

Moral of the story?
I guess hires can be as stupid as their employers.

on a more serious note: hey, if at first u dont succeed - keep on failing till u do :)
if ur soloing try using some tactics like pulling mobs 1-2 at a time or using tactical feats (stun, trip..)

happened all the time to me -- then i just bought pots, got mediocre ac, or I built or tr'd into a bard/arti/divine/arcane. hireling AI sucks for the most part.

Yeah, I usually do draw them out one or two at a time, but playing that monk tends to make me feel like I can whup more butt than I actually can.
And if my hire hadn't just stood there, I would have been fine.

I don't know... I think the hireling was smarter than the employer this time. :p

I wonder if hires have their own forums where they talk about the dumb people who summoned them. :p

I was pleased with hireling cleric AI until about level 8. After that, the hireling clerics started failing. They like to rush into combat zones when I'm trying to strategy pull or selectively kill. They like to kill the mobs I don't want to kill, such as the revered in Faithful Departed. They stand by uselessly and won't heal, or just as bad, use up their SP pool on Heal when it's not needed, then have nothing left for end boss fights. *sigh*

The cleric hireling AI seems to be better on some hires than others.
Flower, for instance, usually I have very good luck with her, and usually keep her around way beyond lvl 7.
