So since it was stated in the Gamebanshee interview http://www.gamebanshee.com/interviews/106515-dungeons-a-dragons-online-menace-of-the-underdark-interview.html that Update 13 will be the Last Update until the expatiation this summer. It will be interesting how players will deal with 6 months of no updates. I guess 6 months of farming lord of the Blades is in the future for people, I was kind of hoping for some tier 3 enhancements for Ninja spy and others. But now it looks like we will have to wait till mid to end of summer for any hope of those )

We shook out a lot of weak sisters a few years back with over a year of no updates, then brought the numbers up tenfold (at least) with f2p.
I'm guessing the same will happen this time except we won't lose so many, since we have a light at the end of the tunnel to look forward to, and the "drought" won't be nearly as long. :D

im actually glad there will be a "break". for awhile i thought i was catching up with everybody else with my epic gear, but im at a standstill again. envenomed cloak shards and seals elude me. been so busy doing epic quests for tokens and pieces, i havent even been able to do more than a few MAs and a few LOBs.
i think with what we will be getting between now and this summer, druids, epic quests and cool raid boss, enhancement changes, new level 16 quests, level cap raise and other things, will be enough to keep people happy until then. some of it is what people have been asking for for years so the wait will be worth it for them.

At least the period of no updates won't be vast and mysterious this time.
I personally don't mind the lack of new content for a while as long as I know there is something good coming in the end.

Considering the expansion is all epic, it makes great time knowing for planning out TRs or not TRing and get gear hunting in expectation of what is to come.
Or, you take a break for a few months and then come back if you can't suffer an attention span that long. Seriously, I've been playing for years here. Taking breaks IS a good thing.

I regularly rotate between this game and EVE. I just came back and things are fresh and funky here. Now I know, I have 6 months to TR into my third and final life for my main (maybe) and get ready for the new expansion. Good times.

Ok lets do some math. He said update 13 would be coming out in the Spring around DDO's birthday (early March). Being that the summer starts in June that would be only 3 months from update 13 for the expansion pack if it launches early summer. even if it takes until August thats 5 months.
For it to take 6 months that woyuld mean a Fall release. So your version of math is off a bit.

I personally think that 5 or 6 months with no updates is a good thing. If the dev's spend some of that time fixing many of the bugs and the lag beast, then it will be great. I'd prefer a huge expansion once or twice a year that has been throughly tested in the development phase and released without exploits and items that do what it says on the tin. :)

I'm very disappointed about these 6 monthes hole about updates and I don't like the Expansion way to work cause:
In this manner instead to give us normal updates every 2-3 monthes as they should they concentrate all in a major expansion in which:
We'll have all pre that was supposed to be in game since the introduction of them with lvl20 cap in autumn 2009...
We'll have a new class studied since 2009 (probably before) and had to be lunched in sping 2011 but we know what happened...
So at the end we'll have nothing more than a normal update but they will take 6 monthes to work "well" in the hope we'll not have some big bugs and others problems we had "recently" and with the trick of the so called "Expansion" instead of "Update" they have the marketing excuse to sell it on vips that were intended to have all new content free...
I'm happy that Turbine at the end come out from the nest to announce something, but sincerely I'm not jumping on my chair for what seems big but is not so much...

They are saying mid August for the expansion. So, even if it stays on schedule, we are looking at end Feb / beg March to Mid August which is just about 5- 6 months depending upon exactly when 13 hits and when the expansion actually goes live. So his version of Math, the one we all use regularly, is correct.

Ok they have said update 13 end of Feb, they hope to have a bug, lag update in a week or so. Plus they have said they hope to have many bug updates every few weeks. The date not official for the expansion is Aug. I do not mind waiting. It would please many if they could fix some of the lag. I play on two systems and know that around 50% of the lag is client side. My 2nd computer is a dual core with integrated video 6gb of ram and lag city. My main system is a quad core with 8gb ram and 1gb video card and not so much lag. I love the game and hope it stays around. I 1st played D&D in 1976 when your race was your class Ungar the Dwarf was my first.

U13 is due in February. we don't know WHEN in February. could be the beginning of the month, could be the end of the month.
Summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere on June 20, 2012. (per the Farmer's Almanac website)

Not 100% sure where I read that, but I recall some talk about releasing the U13 around DDO's birthday.
As for expansion in June... Wouldn't count on it. I'm expecting it September-ish. They're clearly targeting this one to compete with Neverwinter, so they wouldn't want it to come out too early and let people get bored and move on to the other game.

Turbine is a US company, so they would use the US definition of summer:
wikipedia knows:
U.S. summer season is commonly regarded as beginning on Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May) and ending on Labor Day weekend (the first weekend in September), more closely in line with the meteorological definition.
That's around 3.5 months.
They also used the word few.. And while the definition of that can vary wildly, personally I define it as 3.
2 = couple
3 = few
4+ = several
So 3 months, +plus 1/2 month delays for unforseen consequences =
4 months is my bet. (Around June/July)

I personally think no content updates for 6 months is a fine thing, especially if it's leading up to the "mother of All Content Updates" and provides time to focus resources on getting the release right.
I'm certain behind the scenes we will be getting periodic internal updates to phase in new aspects of the underlying engine and content base to support the new update and bug fixes as well.
Bet on it.

We all know when the beginning of summer is, however, if you read the articles posted about the update you will find that the update is expected MID AUGUST and update 13 is expected IN TIME FOR THE ANNIVERSARY. Which means end Fed to Mid August. They release some patches and fixes in between, but don't expect any new content between end of Feb and middle August (5-6 months)... and that is if the date for the expansion doesn't slip. Just knowing Turbine, that date will be more like end of August first week Sept.
For sure it won't be before mid August, so don't be upset when July rolls around and there is no update.

You know, when I updated my VIP account, I didn't see anything in there that said I was going to get all content ever released for free. In fact, when I loaded into the game this afternoon, I got the Artificer splash screen, and it straight outs says "*Terms and Conditions may apply". There is absolutely no reason to run such a disclaimer on a splash screen if, as a VIP, I'm getting all content ever released for free. VIP does grant me access to currently released content, not sure about how challenges work since I've never looked at them.

1) If the as outlined in the interview update 13 comes out on the anniversary which is March (not February). You can't count March in your math because in fact an update did come out, in March.
2) I clearly saw where it was stated that update 13 was coming out on the DDO anniversary (March). I did not see anything that said (from the producers) that it was coming out in August all I saw was summer of 2012. As an action item for you please copy and paste the statement from Turbine that says the expansion pack is NOT coming out until Auguest, we all want to see it. Thats why in my first reply I stated 3-5 months for the expamsion.
Lets Add:
April - 1 month
May - 1 month
June - 1 month (summer begins)
July - 1 month
August - 1 month
Total - Expansion release in 3-5 months as I originally stated.

GB: It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on what Update 13 will include, but do you anticipate releasing any other updates prior to the launch of Menace of the Underdark? Will we see an Update 14 or even an Update 15 before the summer?
Fernando: No, there probably won't be another major update before the expansion. As you can imagine, it’s a very big undertaking for this expansion to make it the size we want it to be. We’re talking about making it the size of several of our regular updates all bundled together and still hitting a spring release around our anniversary for Update 13..
I have posted a direct quote from Fernando that states he expects update 13 to launch in the spring around the anniversary of DDO. Unless the moon has shifted February is still in the winter and the spring actually doesn't begin until mid-March.

DDO's anniversary is near the end of February. i'd believe end of February over end of March (which is the official start of spring). Fernando is known for being vague sometimes, and end of February is close to 'spring'. certainly the majority of the winter has passed at that point and people start to think of spring even if it isn't officially the season yet.
for your other question, i can't find a specific date (if someone else can, be my guest). but it has been mentioned in numerous places (which i can find if you desire) that the expansion will come out in Summer. people assume late summer, so likely August or September. people also assume that September is unlikely because even tho the last day of summer is Sept 22, people are already thinking 'fall' at that point, plus it cramps what little time they have left in the year for other updates/patches
A couple of years ago new content came out slowly, people complained sure, but the finished product was very smooth and not at all buggy (no major bugs at any rate) and recently they've been pushing out a lot of updates and not really giving themselves time to polish the product and make it as smooth and shiny as updates used to be, I personally am looking forward to a while with no updates, gives me a chance to catch up on stuff I've been wanting and it makes me hopeful that a few programmers will get bored and decide to fix a few bugs in their down-time.
I love DDO, but it's a shame how many bugs have been pouring into the system lately, I think a little bit of patience on both the player end and from turbine could bring the game back into a polished shiny spot that many of us remember. I mean, the only reason so many of us old timey players (the beta testers and those who came very shortly after) complain about all the bugs, is because we remember a great finished product that worked on every level with a few bugs here and there but understandable ones, not things like "We didn't touch any of the code for any handwraps, but they're all broken and now force burst wraps heal opponents instead of hurting them, also, pure good only hits good on handwraps, and enhancement bonuses don't work unless you jump 15 times with a +14 jump, exactly, and then spin around five times saying 'Shoombala-boombala-make my handwraps work-yalla' it's not so bad right?" this might be a slight exaggeration, but you get the jist, the bugs lately have been wierd ones, I, as a coder for many years, cannot piece together how some of these things could go wrong, but I do know that I will gladly be patient and wait for any new content, especially if that new content will be a finished product that doesn't break the rest of the game.

Really where do you get your information about the seasons.
When is the first day of spring 2012? March 20th, 2012 (http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/spring/first-day-of-spring.html)

Bah, going by the Celts, Spring starts at the beginning of February, and Summer the start of May. Supporting my argument: Another name for that day in late June people are calling the first day of summer? Midsummer.
Better argument: Druids are from the ancient Celts, the ancient Celts say summer starts May 1st. Druids are in the expansion coming out this summer. I'll go with the druids' calendar for when summer starts. :D
Also, I'll totally wait some time for more content, the expansion has druids, that alone, much less everything coming with it, is enough to make me happy to wait.
I know it will come out in the summmer I have posted that quote myself but you or another person said specifically August all I say is prove it like I did.

and i find your assertion that i am trying to "bend reality" extremely offensive. i am no more bending reality than you are. you asked a question. i answered.

who gives a s**t what the exact date is. we all know its not going to be exact until right before the release, usually 2 weeks before. lets just agree with this year.

"We didn't touch any of the code for any handwraps, but they're all broken and now force burst wraps heal opponents instead of hurting them, also, pure good only hits good on handwraps, and enhancement bonuses don't work unless you jump 15 times with a +14 jump, exactly, and then spin around five times saying 'Shoombala-boombala-make my handwraps work-yalla' it's not so bad right?"
Sadly, this didn't work. My wife now thinks I'm nuts & my dog laughs hysterically barking 'Shoombala' however.

So in one sentence you say that you never said August but that you said August was alikely possibility? Now who is confusing?
The only issue here is the doom and gloomers and that no matter what Turbine or DDO does it will always be negative and taken to the worst extreme. All I ever did was post actual comversation from Turbine staff to show that there is nothing that says it will come out in 6 months after U-13. All you did was offer your unproven supposition that is founded in, oh nothing.
After trying to convince us that February was really a spring month and not a winter month all anyone could think of is that you were trying as hard as possible to make an exteremely positive annoucment about U-13 and the expansion pack into something negative. I don't drink the negative koolaid like you and some others.
I find it offensive that you are so negative. Your a doom and gloomer like some others and you don't like being called out because you don't have the facts to back up your negativity.

But now it looks like we will have to wait till mid to end of summer for any hope of those )
Good chance for us semi-casuals to catch up with the power-gamers... :)
I rather liked our 1 year drought a few years ago... Gave me the chance to make a LOT of Shroud items, and bring me a lot closer in power to the elite vets.

Well said! +1.
Time being relative, and all.

I'm still going to stand by this:
Bah, going by the Celts, Spring starts at the beginning of February, and Summer the start of May.
=P

OMGLOL. I'M negative? that is quite literally the funniest thing i've heard all week! nothing could be farther from the truth. i'm ecstatic this update and expansion are coming out. GIDDY even.
1. saying "august is a likely possibility which is why people might be saying it, but i'm not sure" does NOT equal "it's coming out in august". if yer gonna quote me, do it right please.
2. i did not try to convince ANYone that February was a spring month. i said it was close to spring, and people are thinking about spring (except maybe... i dunno... Canada. where it's cold till July or something. :p ) and i said Fernando is not known for being exact and precise. i mean, come on. he told us crafting was going to be 'take paralyzing off this weapon, and put it on that weapon" and that is NOT how it is.
my post AGREED with you that it probably WON'T be 6 months of no updates, my supposed dates just don't line up with yours. you asked where people got dates from, i answered you. and now you call me a negative nancy? LOL. read my post a little more carefully
and as for facts...
FACT: Fernando said Spring, BUT HE ALSO SAID FOR DDO's 6th ANNIVERSARY
FACT: DDO's anniversary falls at the end of February
FACT: multiple other gaming websites list the update release date as February
now get off my back. we're on the same side, and i HATE "doom and gloom".

Katz, I see what your saying now maybe it was others but some in this post are trying to put a bruise on one of the biggest annoucements DDO has had since launching and then going F2P. There was a time when Turbine said they did not ever see putting out an expansion pack for DDO but just having continued modules and updates.
For those saying it would be 6 months between update 13 and the expansion pack the math just doesn't add up.

Summary: Please forward me the name of the school's you attended so I know where NOT to send my kids. I want to stay away from your math teacher.
Considering your spelling (expamsion), you should not be asking where I went to school. Plus, I doubt you or your offspring could get the scores high enough to attend college where I graduated.
Additionally, if you read the articles, they are saying mid-August release. So, 5-6 months. The anniversary of this game is end of Feb or at the very latest, beginning of March. That would be most (or all) of March, April, May, June, July and at least 1/2 of August which is 5-6 months. Please read the articles about the "expamsion" before making up timelines.
