Hey! It’s been a while so let’s look back a little bit before talking about ‘the future’.
2011 was a pretty crazy year if you think about it, and as a whole I think we did pretty good. Crystal Cove, airships made out of beds, Chester (Who was pretty awesome), a crafting system, a new class with a pet, a couple of raids and the challenge system. There were some bumps in the road, especially at the end there, but we/I learn from each of those moments and hopefully make it better for the next time. I had fun helping create all this cool stuff; I hope you had fun playing it.
I would also like to say a big thanks to my team. Yes…sigh…there is a QA team at Turbine. You have seen a couple of them, Kookie and 404, but there is a whole group that is invisible, and they have become one of my favorite teams I’ve ever had over the past year. So…”Zhennu emp'poss akh!” Kobold still loves you.

Ok enough sappy stuff.

I mentioned at some point last year we were looking into doing quick patch releases more often. Well, we are doing that starting in the next week or two. Nothing ‘BIG’ just bug fixes. In the future, we may have new content or items in these patches, but the plan is to keep them small, focused and manageable. We have a very busy year ahead of us with our current schedule and adding these bug fix releases in does create some more overhead for QA, but I and our development team feel that this needs to happen. We know that there are a 1000 papercuts right now, and we just cannot fix everything at once, it would be practically impossible. But 25-30 bugs a month? That is completely possible.

A couple of bug things:

Disappearing bags: (I’ll just quote Mad) On the dev side of things, there has been ongoing work to solve this issue (it's a very tricky issue) and there is a patch going live this month that should fix it.

LAG: This is an ongoing problem- and is really multiple issues, one we are attempting to solve by testing a new physics upgrade. When this is further along in about a month, I will be placing this on Lamannia for an extended period of time. More to come on that. There is some other render/client side stuff that also contributes to the sensation. We are working on cleaning that up too for the next update.

Bug Tool: This is now functional. There is still a possibility of having issues, and we are still thinking about a newer solution to the tool. Be nice in the bugs though, I have a new guy doing it…kid gloves! I have a few other ideas to get info to QA from the community which should be active by the next Lamannia update. MadFloyd and I are trying to have the community as a whole more involved in the process. After all, we do this all for you.

So what’s next for QA? Well, we are slowly in the process of changing the way we deal with our external servers. I expect this to be in full swing for the next Lamannia update in a few weeks. I’m still working out some sort of reward for Lamannia participation. I also want to change the name of the server.

We have been pretty busy internally changing the way we work. I could bore you with QA methodologies and whatnot, but the long of the short is we should move a little quicker, but also with more transparency into development, which should avoid any nasty surprises. Almost all the changes to the way we are doing things are good for quality, which as a QA Manager, makes me pretty happy.

Anyway, exciting times! It’s fun to watch things you planned on a year ago start to take form.

One last thing oh Denver Fans (you didn’t think I would make a post without a sports reference did you?)

Good to read about the bags... So in the future people might have their bags replaced with whatever was in it?

But the people who have lost years of ingredients, scrolls, seals, shards will still be SOL unfortunately? :/

Maj,

I'm a little worried about something, specifically the hiring of staff at Turbine. I realize that people come and go, especially in certain fields, but lately, I'm a bit worried that people just 'walk in, work a little while, then quit or get fired.' with how often I see Turbine 'hire' people. I understand this topic may be a bit touchy, but is the staff in general really getting a boost in numbers or is it just a revolving door of kobold employees? Or a combination of both?

I am guessing people leave alot and that there is a hiring surge for the new expansion.

Interesting on the physics end. Streaming (personally not getting data chunks), interpolation (personally not seeing motion), or handshaking (one guy not updating bogging down others)? Makes a difference in what aspects to focus on in regards to whether there's an improvement there or not, and testing methodology when it comes time to try and beat it to death.

Oh, and just because it can't be said enough: props on the back and forth while there's still time to make changes without ulcer medication.

Sorry Maj, but the peoples want to see an UnderTebowDog win (though it would actually be more due to the DenverD if there is a win). Just don't give away the 80 yard play in OT. Them Steelers got Stole. Brady looks a bit haunted and OLD whenever someone says PLAYOFFS near him these last few years.

You'll be at the game right? (With your Pats-themed Ipad prioritizing DDO bugs). We'll look for you.

Dear Major Mal

I have been following your posts since the beginning. Your transparency, wit, and clear/concise words have been a boon to the community. I hope the rest of the higher-ups at Turbine realize how valuable your communications to the DDO playerbase have been.

I have also been politely ignoring your sports references. I am a Habs fan and by my very nature I should probably outright hate you, or anyone else, that cheers for those godforsaken Bruins. But I am also man enough to respect someone who cheers for a talentless goon-squad full of thugs. Way to be a true fan. ;)

But Saturday will be the true tale of the tape. I personally stand to lose several valuable guild members over this matchup but so be it. It's Tebow Time baby! Pure and simple.

Go Broncos!

Thanks for the update.

I do appreciate the feedback I get when I submit bug reports on Lama. It's a thankless task, I'm sure, but it really is a good thing to do. A new victim, huh? Guess we'll have to make these bugs entertaining ;)

Incentives for Lama participation also a very good idea - particularly if you want to have a good chance at multiple warm bodies testing the lag patches...

This is great, while I understand that at times with the complex systems in DDO, bugs are very difficult to track down and fix, without breaking something else. Some movement in this area on a consitant basis, at least from the players perspective will be great.

A couple of bug things:

Disappearing bags: (I’ll just quote Mad) On the dev side of things, there has been ongoing work to solve this issue (it's a very tricky issue) and there is a patch going live this month that should fix it.
Again, very nice, while not all that common, whne this bug strikes it can be devastating to a player, years of collecting gone... Nice ot see it getting some attention.

LAG: This is an ongoing problem- and is really multiple issues, one we are attempting to solve by testing a new physics upgrade. When this is further along in about a month, I will be placing this on Lamannia for an extended period of time. More to come on that. I have a specific question here Maj.... Has there been any discussion or movement on dealing with the issues of lag relating to logging in and out of multiple characters? While the variosu kinds of lag, lag-like behaviors are many, this is one that affects MANY people, and is a serious deterant to game play.

Now.. Let's talk about the ladder bug.

No, I don't mean the one where someone accidently put two 10ft length ladders together slightly off, so that people get stuck in the middle.

I mean the one that's been in this game since headstart. You run to a ladder... You start climbing the ladder... And you just endlessly rebound until you back away from the ladder and try again. It can happen everywhere.. It's random.. And it's irritating.

Even more irritating is that it seems to be a client bug. The more powerful machine I use the more likely it is to occur.

Desktop = Better to just jump on the ladder it is the only way.
Laptop = 30% ladder hitching still very annoying, just jump and avoid the issue.
Netbook = Never hitches.

Seems to be some manner of over updating at the base of the ladders that my netbook is too slow to get confused by.

Read. Not sure if that is possible. But we shall see..

The big risk here is that people will then use lama only to enjoy testing character builds and will not test anything at all beyoind the char gen and their favorite pet quest to test.

Have you considered creating "dev tokens" as rewards for finding bugs on Lama? For every bug that gets filed from your report you get a certain number of tokens, more for stuff nobody else has noticed yet, more for detailed reproduction steps, etc.

You can then trade in the dev tokens in exchange for dev time to fix something in the game that REALLY rubs you the wrong way, such as a specific ToD set sucking beyond all others, ie very specific items. Cost in dev tokens for a given task to be determined by you.

Ehh, just tossing ideas.

Same bug mechanic as jumping in the water and seeing your toon being repositioned many times before landing.

See butcher's path quest near optional chest (there is also a always hitching ladder there).

This isn't the "ladder bug" this is a problem with the client and the server constantly disagreeing as to were exactly you are. Stop pushing forward to give them a second to 'catch up' and the hitching disappears, no need to back away from the ladder.

It consistently and reliably happens on ladders. THIS is what everyone I know in game refers to when we talk about "the ladder bug".

I don't actually CARE why the problem is, or what causes it, or even what the workarounds are for it. I've been playing here for almost six years now, I know how to avoid it by this point.

Occasionally I mistime my jump and find out that no, it's still out there. :p

Mainly, I just want some acknowledgement that yes, they know it exists. I have yet to see anything of the kind.

I do tend to agree with people that say it's related to the game engine somehow, and it might not actually be fixable, ever. However, with the lack of official responses, it's just kinda out there in limbo.

Given the fact it is NOT a f'n ladder issue, I can believe that. It is client server predictive anti cheat positioning. As your netbook runs slowest, the anti cheat code doesn't kick in.

I look forward to having more bugs to remove from my list, and happy to hear that the bug reporting tool has been fixed too.

On Lama Land, rewards would be a great incentive, I know you've seen some discussion on that between a Guildie and myself, but I'm going to cross thread quote it here for others to see and maybe even support.

... Offer rewards for good helpful bug reports. 25 TP for valid feedback. In the same time it would take me to farm that much favor on a new character I could explore lama and provide solid feed back. You're welcome to define good feedback and invalidate feedback as you see fit. Its the same concept as CP for PELs if you've had that experience.

There's other ideas others and myself came up with on that thread too, but that's the major one.

I can't wait to get back in game (Hopefully before Lama gets a new Build) and start another year with DDO!

There is another circumstance that can cause this behavior that I'm having the web folk look into. It doesn't seem to be specific to the bug tool itself, and we have a few theories. Made a few adjustments, more on the way. I may be prowling for guinea pigs soon to ensure that our changes helped. Will update when (and if) I need volunteers.

Tolero Hey, yay you're alive. Nice to hear you again. We have already missed you.

No we have never heard of any such ladder bug.

edit: just in case...yes that is sarcasm.

Sunday morning Sarcasm? Kobold still hate you.

Since you are up and reading this. I know you made desert a lot better with the 3 scrolls for 1, but seals and shards are still an issue out there. I think Ihave 7 seals of stinkpelt's hide, and while that's a lovely item, I would love to be able to trade in 3 seals/3 shard for a random seal/shard like the DT armors.

also, I know it's beena while since it's been posted, but any word on if/when tomes will stay on a character after use? for TR purposes?

It's related to latency and reconciling the client and server data in some way. If I get any sort of correction of speed (such as haste start/stop) or correction of direction (bouncing off quest geometry) on my way to a ladder that is within my latency delay, I WILL stutter back down the ladder to the bottom (same with grabbing ledges). This is hilarious fun since I usually have a connection in the 1200-1500ms range so the ladder bug is a frustrating part of most ladders.

Worst case scenario, jumping from out of water to try and grab a ladder or a ledge. It's just not going to happen unless you position yourself perfectly below where you are going to grab on. Any forward motion and you're doomed to snap back into the water every time since the duration of the jump is always shorter than the delay from latency. Thank you for extending most of them down into the water.

Personally, the REAL ladder bug while mildy annoying is not much of a concern to me...... Considering the HUGE problems with other lag/lag-like/server-client issues.....

Any chance we can get an update on when we can expect a fix on the abbot end reward list for 20ths? It has been 2 months now with no further updates.

Also would be nice to know if the upgraded vile blasphemy is supposed to be 3 or 4 charges.

Let see if it works again :

What about the Bugged beyond death Guild Rank System ? ( the /guild createrank, /guild renamerank, ... commands )

What about the Bugged beyond the Pale Shroud Collectable Quests ?
( you know those 3 guys that stands on top of the towers in Meridia doing nothing and the bags that spawns from time to time in the shroud and, with lots of luck, gives you something to clutter a bit more your inventory)

The other bug I pointed is in the same category... FUBARED since inception.

You missed the whole point though :

They either should have been fixed long ago, or anything that relates to them should have been totally removed long ago.

I'd spend them all to get Spellsong Vigor to work on Warforged. :)

Got it. We will commence Operation Ladder Removal. The funny part is, all new characters will be stuck at the first room of the first dungeon. Shortest MMO ever.

Seriously tho, we know about the bug. Tough fix, and like you said, been there forever and people have lived with it. It will be interesting to see if the new physics update has any effect on it. We shall see soon enough.

That depends. If you put down a solid fog, that COULD slow the apple as it falls.

I would prefer the server renamed Lasganammia, it would be easier to remember which letter you have 2 of.
Lamannia? Lammania? Llama land?

I don't remember seeing any apple trees in the Vale, however.

It was those pesky and yet now extinct Lamannia born beavers, they ate them all. But if you go ALMOST all the way to the top of the hill above Rainbow, not too far below the explorer point, and you jump justt right you can float to the top fo the mountian between there and the entrance to Meridia. On the top of that mountian which is totaly inaccepsible from the ground stands a lone apple tree the last survivor of a proud race known as Lamapplinas...... It has now gone dormant from the old habits of walking about the vale proud to share it's fruit with all, it is a lonely old thing...... :(

Ever since that got announced I've been curuios what effect it would have on ladders, on jumping, on hitting your head on a perpendicular object only to be forced away at 45 degrees, and lastly on going from land to knee deep water, how much of a rip back would be felt.

I do not know if you ever taken a class in "Eberron Physics Theory". It really depends on the cosmology of the 12? 13 moons of Eberron and whether the apples are filled with Air Elementals, Greater Air Elementals, Air Elemental Guards, etc.

Remember those bats in Vision of Destruction and Coalescence Chamber? They must have eaten bad apples filled with Greater Air Elementals that trained in the artificer spell "tactical denotation". What do you think?!

Also, it really depends on which plane you are on. If you are in the plane of Nightmares, the apples will fall at different velocities depending on which part of the dream you are in.

As my wizard has never been to the plane of Lamannia except the small little experience in the Prison of the Planes, my wizard is willing to *bet* that apples will fall at different velocities depending on which part of the plane. :)

Now, acrobats and jugglers rejoice! They no longer need a lot of skill in jumping and juggling more than 2 apples :)

Yeah I honestly don't see why people complain about it so much I never knew about it until I started participating in the forums because I always jump up a ladder since its faster so until I actually tried just climbing a ladder just to see it after being told I never noticed..since than I've never experienced it again since I just naturally jump when I come to a ladder...not because of the bug if the bug was fixed I'd still jump...same reason I jump in water...it's faster

The bug may happen even if you jump to the ladder.
It's especially annoying when you have to jump to a ladder that's above nothing : you can't do anything, you'll fall anyway. Exemples of these annoying ladders are in The Pit (Furnace 1, ladder to the shrine opening room... Fall and you are back to the bottom), VoN2 (ladder facing the shrine, you fall you are back at dungeon's entrance after a short fight with a spider that may render you helpless from cha damage, forcing party memberd to jump down to help you.)
There are probably others as well, but those two happened a few times to me (even if it's been a while since last time) and are especially annoying.
