View Full Version : Advice on taking a new toon up to 20

So, I plan on make a Toon who's whole "job" will be to get to 20 fast so they can be a shroud runner for my "Real" toons. My "Real" toons will be just gathering a few more cleansing essences and finishing off some more Green Steel items. I miss playing the lower level quests and mid level quests. So this seems like an fun way to play those, and to still benefit my other guys while I wait to finish up a few key items.

I am thinking a "healer" type would be smart (PuG Shrouds are always waiting on a healer it seems).

Other option would be the standard WF SOR for the extremely fast blitz to 20 (solo the whole way really quickly). Seems casters are more welcome than they used to be.

I also want this to be a "fun job" also. I consider magic casting "fun". So strict melees (Barb and Fighter) would not be fun for me. I don't have anything against those classes...I just prefer to have a Blue Bar.

SO here is what I was thinking...

A battle cleric of some type. Most likely an 18CLR/2FTR split. Probably a Human or a Dwarf. I would just be a Radiant Servant and swing my Weapon and whatnot...

A Bard that has healing capabilities and full scroll enhancements (maybe a Spell Singer or a Warchanter). Not sure if I would go 2HF or 2WF. Seems 2HF is way easier on feats which would allow me to take Empower Heal and Maximize...etc...

WF SOR...pretty easy...nuke things...stand in your Fire Wall...Ding Level 20...

I don't see myself making a FVS. I have 2 at cap...one is an Evoker and one is a WF FVS. The WF one will be getting TRed soon; thinking a month or so. Currently, he as in the mid 30's on a few raids and mid teens on a few others...so I kinda want to hit those multiple of 20s lol.

Anyway, as always input is appreciated.

Considering how much you have to run Shroud to get a cleansing essence...

the above quote sounds utterly surreal to me.

To clarify: After more than 2 years of playing I have only one capped toon, with 37 Shroud completions as of yesterday, and one level 16 with ONE Shroud completion.

after 2 years only 37 completions?
ur really in the minority there mate, if u go at it every time ur off timer u can get about 100 completions per year (with 65 days to spare)
but yeah, that's just silly math.. u probably dont have much play time, or dont run it much.
its entirely possible to run several toons to grind shroud (1 completing each shroud others faring it for 5-6 runs then complete) and i know more than a few who do it.

to op, i would suggest a wf sorc nuker... cant go wrong there (i dislike them myself but cant argue with the facts)
if ur willing to expand ur options a bit, monks are considerd as melee casters... i know i enjoy mine alot

I don't know, most useful advice would be bank levels and try not to skip many mid level quests. You shouldn't have much of a problem doing that.

I currently have 9 toons on Shroud timer. So building and leveling a toon simply for the purpose you list is pretty easy and quick, especially if it's a first lifer. I have done it with a couple of my first life toons.

Once you get multiple toons on timer, the gathering of green steel ingredients becomes much easier and quicker.

I too really enjoy going back and running the low level content.

Level 15: 12 Dec 2010
2 Shrouds
Level 16: 23 Jan 2011
3 Shrouds
Level 17: 8 Mar 2011
1 Shroud
Level 18: 23 Mar 2011
4 Shrouds
Level 19: 21 May 2011
11 Shrouds
Level 20: 31 Aug 2011
16 Shrouds since then, and the pace really picked up in early December. Once my main capped, I was more interested in running my lower-level toons. Only when I decided to TR did I start running Shroud as often as possible -- and it is still not exactly every 3 days. I have RL obligations :)

Once my main TR's (after getting Cleansing Essence on 40th completion), I suspect I will play her almost exclusively for next year or so. Especially since I plan to TR her again as soon as she reaches 20. There will be simply no time for other toons.

My second-oldest toon is only level 16, so getting into Shroud PUG's is difficult fo him.

Go pure healer. There's nothing boring about healing shroud - well, parts 1-3 are kind of boring. But the rest can be fairly intense.

Reality is, by adding 2 ftr splash, you're giving folks an excuse to not let you group with them. So, go pure, and remove the drama.

getting a toon to 20 just for shroud seems like a waste to me. Go for a pure bard if you want to be able to farm all the other raids as well (low gear requirements and responsabilites for bards) or go sorc if you want to solo farm epic scrolls as well (needs better gear and more skill but can farm more stuff overall)
