Okay the games are here.. and I am utterly clueless about getting coins. :) Any tips? I managed to get a couple jumping off the big ramp near the harbormaster's place, but that gets tedious fast. :)

Is there any practical way to get coins that doesn't involve the Super Mario stuff? :)

Practice the jumps. Once it clicks for ya, you'll start racking up coins.

It will never click for me - I have never got a purple. Luckily there is now Cannith Crafting so I don't need to waste my time.

There are easy Blue and white coins to get by jumping off the bowsprit of the boat in the barbor near the Irestone Inlet NPC. It is quite quick to jump, swim to the side, jump out run round and along the boat to jump again in another instance. Does get tedious though...

Check the videos, and your main goal will be landing the deck. If you can land the deck, you can grab the purple. Getting to the deck often seems to be the biggest obstacle.
Key buffs/tips:
Jump buff from House P, a friendly caster, or Icy Jump Potions (these are nice)
House P time warp clickie (alternatives to this are Expeditious Retreat or Haste, though Haste is not as good)
Allow yourself to "fall" down the slope of the ice - do not push W or forward until just before you're ready to jump
Featherfall - this can assist you to land the deck if you are inexpert, however it will dramatically change your timing - cast with care (don't cast it on others without checking with them)

If it didn't changed, kill fire based monsters. Fire elementals, hell hounds, red dragons. Trash drops white, red named blue (maybe orange named also), purple named purple coins.
For jumping I use:
- any given char. Class, race, build irrelevant
- House P Warp Drive
- House P Jump buff
- thats it

Not really. You can get white coins in abundance from killing firey mobs. Though, your primary Risia prizes are going to be coming from purple coins.
You can get purple coins from firey purple named raid bosses. But these total up to just Velah (I believe), and I think that you also have to have the killing stroke.

Okay, so I found a guy in the harbor who gave me a few tips. I watched him and the very next time I jumped and hit the ramp in the sky! Amazed, I continued on, hit the next ramp and the one after that and got a purple coin. I was stunned -- I can never do this stuff!
In roughly 50 attempts since I haven't duplicated it, but I'm hooked now. Grinding the white and blue coins is boring but trying to get that purple is fun, at least for the moment. :)

The physics for DDO are goofy. One wrong turn or mouselook and you'll find yourself sailing over Niles Cage's sloop over the wrong direction. It takes some practice to get a "feel" for these goofy physics.
I find that while in air, light (LIGHT!) adjustments using forward and back (W and S) are sometimes necessary to compensate and make sure you land it. Just remember - easy does it.
Depending on your "Buff Cocktail," a striding ring or a jump ring might help you. It's also key to know that the more surface area you "skate" across, the more momentum you will build. The video that got me to the deck actually covered that, and recommended taking the first downslope at the top at a diagonal SPECIFICALLY to "skate" over more ice and build more momentum.

But dosent adding Icy Burst to some existing weapons beat the damage you can put out from Cannith Crafting?
having holy Burst and Icy Burst on a weapn at low levels seems pretty awesome.

There is a quest in House K do not remember the name it is by the bridge going to the bank that has a lot of Fire Elementals and Fire Reavers in it as well as the Fallen Temple (iirc) in the Desert. Problem is that they generally only give mostly White and a chance for 1-3 blue coins.

The mobs and coin colors are correlated directly:
Standard fiery mob == White Coin
Red named fiery mob == Blue Coin
Purple named fiery raid boss == Purple Coin

Yeah it's nice if you have a weapon that is better than what you can craft. last time it was here I had a couple holy burst of pg that I put frost on for general trash. (Both are obsolete now that I have 2 Lit 2, but they served me well for a long time)
Now I use mostly crafted weapons or GS now that my crafting levels are decent (60's in all) , but if you've got loot gen weapons it is VERY NICE to have some frost on there. I still have a greater elemental bane with frost on it that I use a good bit.
I never could figure out the purple coins, I just stink at Mario skills, but the blues and whites are easy and fast to get, so if you have some extra time it is WELL WORTH IT to get frost on some of your weapons. I usually try to use those "I only have 10-15 minutes or so to play" times to do some coin jumping. Or waiting for a group to fill.
I do wish the coins were more like the jester coins and dropped in chests, because the jumping is really super boring after a while. Which is why I only do it 15 minutes or so at a time.

I'm slowly getting better at it. 7 purples now.
It's funny because I usually hate this sort of stuff, yet now I find it one of the few things to do that is different and actually a bit of a challenge. I can't use the gimmicks that make the purples easier to get, but that would make it just boring grinding.
I love paralyzing weapons but because of the cost of that effect they are weak on damage so looking to add icy burst to one or two of them.

The first hallway in DQ2 is good for wracking up blue coins. They respawn too IIRC. And hey, it would give you a reason to finally kill all the fire elementals in Tempest Spine:)

True, I forgot that you can add it and end up with 2 prefixes. But I'm going to have to wait until my main starts getting plat hand-over-fist and buy it because I just can't get a purple :(

If you want white coins (I loved some of the pots that they hand out for them), I suggest playing through Upper Sorrowdusk until you're at the point that you have to destroy the summoning pits. I've been running that one for a while, kiting the mephits into my blade barriers, racking up white coins pretty quickly. Don't destroy the summoning pits of course and just keep kiting the mephits through whatever you lay down for them. Play it on casual and the mephits drop pretty fast.
One note though: this gets boring REAL quick.

So the novelty is wearing off but I'm still pretty addicted to the jumping. I can hit the first ramp 90% of the time now, and land on the platform about 50% of the time.
What I can't seem to get down is the "left turn" and run for the coins. In particular, as I'm going down that first ramp from the platform, frequently my character will do an odd "stutter step" and lose momentum, making it impossible for me to get the purple. It's like I do a "micro jump" on the ramp, even though I am not pressing the jump key, and I slow down too much. Any ideas on why this happens and how to avoid it?
Thanks. :)

Try not to force pressing the forward key..let the ice take you down the ramp.

Risia tip #1
Only the purples matter
If you can get purples with any percentage of success, you will have so many everything else that you will be overwhelmed in anything they can give you.

Tip: Roll a monk or fvs to 20 and leave them there for the ice games. Don't bother with the ramp, just dingy jump the purple. House P pendant + jump buff mean you hardly even need any points in jump itself too.
Though I think if you had a good enough connection and a monk, doing the ramp you can get the purple, turn around, abundant step back to the final ramp, zone change (zeros your momentum in addition to refreshing the purple), get going on the ramp, jump, pick up the purple there, turn around, abundant step back to the final ramp... I was reasonably good at that a couple years ago when I had not-comcast.

I could never get that left turn down either, then a very nice person told me what to do:
Instead of trying to make that left hand turn, go to the back right hand corner and stop.
Jump straight up and you'll hit light gravity
Now go left and land in the middle of the down ramp. That will give you the momentum to make it to the next ramp.
Hope it helps.

I've gotten 3 purple coins from purple named bosses on my healers. Now I'm good, but I doubt they all came from getting the "killing blow" so I'm pretty sure you can get them just being in a party that kills purple named fire based bosses.
But I might just be so good my healer gets all the kills against all purple named bosses.

If you encounter this problem your network latency is too high.
Make sure you have <100ms latency before attempting the jumps.
If you have ~300ms like me don't even think about buying skates.

I average ~243ms and have no problems on the ramps. I just have to be satisfied with one purple coin per jump. I can't switch instances fast enough to get two.

I've been getting it pretty reliably with my 13 monk. I jump from one of the rocks past the jester - the 3rd or 4th rock up, with a jump of 40 and the house P pendant. It takes 2 abundant steps to hit the coin from there, but it's manageable.

People abusing the system to take what you worked to get, poachers will have your purple coins before you get there anyway. Why even have this event? It is ruled from the jump point on the ship mast. Turbine hasn't fixed the flaw so it is pointless to learn the jump. Stand on the dock and watch, it's like fleas on a dog...

?
The coins are instanced. If you skate right behind me, yes...the image of the coin disappears. But if you pass through the same spot, you'll hear a *clink!* and get a coin. Guaranteed.
People jumping for coins are not abusing, or poaching. Just like a purple collectable bag in a quest - they are getting theres, and you still have the opportunity to get yours (so long as you leap for the right spot).

They fixed the issue where someone could steal your coin. If someone hits the purple before you and you still pass through it's hitbox, you will still get the coin. Even if it's not visible.
That being said, if two toons hit the purple almost simultaneously, it is possible that one of them won't get the coin.

Seen mention of monk and FvS....don't forget Air Savants have a special leap skill now too.....Wind Dance.....and it works just fine.
I use the ship poles....jump on the first one which has a lower landing spot, then I jump straight up and nudge over just a little to the second pole which is higher up.
Jump off from there and use your Wind Dance just as you are coming even with the purple coin.
I tried using Wind Dance off the Leaky Dhingy roof, but could never get it.
Using the ship poles I get it every time, got almost 30 purples in an hour last night.....including 3 icy burst :D
BTW, Purge the Fallen Shrine is amazing for farming whites if you need them.
I literally tried the regular ski jump method for about 5 hours....WITH SKATES.........and got about 5 purples.......I gave up that way...IMO the game is way to laggy for this event to be fun doing it by this method....I am just happy I had a capped Sorc lying around for this......I feel for the people who don't have a monk, FvS, or Sorc....the event is very unkind to them.....I think it should be made a bit easier.......it's a lot of grind to get something like Sup Glaciation VIII...and who wants to put icy burst on only one weapon?

Ice games are without question the dullest and most useless of the events...need an icy burst kit?...do a few qsts (which earn you exp, remember?), sell some stuff, buy one off someone who enjoys playing super-mario. Easy.

I dunno. After a couple of days, I'm inclined to think it should be made harder. :)
I started out being thrilled when I was able to get one purple every 10 or 15 minutes. Now I can get the purple off the ice ramps around 50% of the time. I actually find it easier than fiddling around with ship masts and so forth.
When the event started, people were selling purple coins for 5k-7k each. Yesterday I saw them down to 2k. They don't seem particularly hard to get, nor in high demand.
I agree that overall the event could use some sprucing up. Once you've gotten the jumping down it ceases to be a challenge and turns into a grind. And the rewards could use some improving as well.. I never see anyone really interested in anything other than the icy burst kits. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see the high level glaciation as being worth all the recipes and materials it takes to get it...

Right up until last Risia, there was no source of Superior Glaciation above VI. I actually gathered the 40 recipes and 8448 motes to take my sorc's plain Superior Potency VI dagger and add Superior Glaciation VIII for Polar Ray a couple Risias back. Since then many things have have been added to the loot tables that have higher glaciation levels than were available before this Risia incarnation.

Luckily my ranger monk is just the perfect build for this.
Up onto ship mast - straight to purple - 54 jump / sprint boost / abundant step = 7 purples per 2 mins but then need a pub rest for my boosts so was averaging 5-6 mins per 7 purples in real terms.
Happy days.
In a session I racked up 4-5 complete icy burst kits and am just missing kit 11 for 3 complete sets of the glaciation upgrades.
I never got any with any other toon and I sympathise with those who try as it is very biased to the monk / fvs classes. I would not bother if it was not this easy.

That's because a lot of people have a FvS, Monk, or Air Savant in their lineup that can easily get the purple coins.....now think of all the new players which makes up a very large portion of the playerbase.......they do not have such an option and for them I would think this event is probably overwhelmingly frustrating.
Purples are probably not worth as much because we have three classes now instead of just one who can do the easy purple farm...which means they are probably much more available than before.
Honestly if I would not have had an Air Savant amongst my characters I would have just farmed plat and bought what I wanted.....cause when I was doing it on my wiz I have to say I was more frustrated than having a good time....I simply did not think it was worth the time invested at all, and some of the recipes drop at super low rates.....not only the ones that come from purples but a lot of the 9-11 glaciation recipes that drop from blue...you need 5 each to get to the next tier.
Honestly...for what you get this event is by far and away the worst item/time invested ratio there is...Mabar and CC blow this away.
For how laggy the game is and how sensitive the ice jumps are...this event is about luck as much as it is about skill....I'm more inclined to think it's luck instead of skill actually.

This latest Risia is the first time I've tried mast jumping, or really doing it at all, and I think for a monk class, I had a decent route worked out.
Equip/buffs:
House P: Pendant of Time
House P: Jump
Cannith Boots of Propulsion
Abundant Step
Ocean Stance
I can consistently hit 3 purples + 4 blues/2min (across 2 instances).
In a 1/2hr jump session (jump skill = 53)
45 purple
60 blue
Stable Ki at 40-44 across the entire session.
The circuit consists of a cycle of 2 tall mast jumps for 1 purple + 1 blue/ea followed by a short mast jump for 3 blue/ea, 1 abundant step is used per jump, no more. Ocean stance ensures enough Ki is generated between jumps to avoid spending any time waiting.

Skates,
Haste spell/pot or house p trinket,
icy jump pot/spell or house p jump buff,
take off featherfall.
Easiest way to do the mast jump for me is to move the camera all the way down
then highlight yourself so you have a circle, then jump for the mast and put the
mast in the center of your circle.
Move the camera to look at the next ramp, then jump up and push forward
and drop in to the ramp. You want to jump higher than the edge of the ramp
and drop in a little lower than the lip of the ramp.
Once you get to the end of the ramp..jump slightly and then stop in the corner
of the ice block. Take a min here to go get coffee or whatever.
Now turn to your left and jump straight up. Push yourself forward a little so
you drop into the next ramp, again hitting it a little below the lip of the ramp.
If you slip here you can turn around and recover by jumping out of the ramp
and back to the corner of the ice block.
Jump a little bit before you get to the end of the ramp and push forward a little
into the final ramp. You want to jump off the end of the last ramp early or you might sail
over or under the purple coin, but once you get this timing down you
should get the purple more than you miss it.

I don't mast jump. I don't jump from Leaky Dinghy.
I jump the old fashioned way.
If you see my stats, I get coins, You do not have to be a monk, or favored soul, or whatever. You just have to have pendant of time and a reasonable jump skill.
I can even get purples when I let my jump spell wear off and it goes to 28.
All you need is the patience to do it.
The games came less than one month after the last one's ended. Which was way too soon.
