A friend requested that I come up with a build for him. He had some specific requirements; open locks/ trap skills, ranged ability, melee ability, and decent hit points. It also had to be f2p and a 28 point build.

This is what I came up with...

With Minos, a +6 CON item, GFL, and a GS hit point item the hp will break 500. I also tried to minimize tome use as well.

What do you think?

Thanks,
R

f2p means they won't have access to GS hp item, nor Minos. Minos you could probably get with a pass as long as someone grinds out the taps for you ahead of time. GS will be pretty much impossible unless you buy the pack. Also, wouldn't it be easier for him to just grind out 400favor and get Drow instead of Elf. Though you would miss out on Scimitars I do believe at the cost of a few extra ability points. Meh... so-so.

Though, possibly taking UMD wouldn't be a bad idea? If so, I'd probably drop jump, which you could live without. You'll be able to get jump spell with ranger levels. Then to max it out each level, probably spot. It is nice to have, but it is a give or take. I'd personally prefer UMD, but I guess that is up to what he is willing to do.

Still, all around solid build for a new player with limited options.

But what do I know? It is 4:30am and I still ain't asleep.

I can't believe I didn't think about dropping jump for UMD. Good thoughts. Thanks!

First off, dump-stat WIS; this build is MAD enough for 28-pt build without wasting pts there. I'd put the pts into STR & CON.

Second, did you consider rogue 7 / rgr 11 / ftr 2 instead? You give up HPs & extra feats for more SA DPS & a lot more skill pts; or it would let you dump INT for more, say, DEX while still keeping your skills up.

Why not just a classic exploiter / fighter variant?

Why not just a classic exploiter / fighter variant?
While that's certainly doable, if the OP's friend wants a F2P elf AA / trapmonkey, rgr 12-18 doesn't add much to this build: an extra FE, lvl 4 spells, a couple more rgr enhs - that's about it. Extra ftr lvls add more HPs & feats (at the expense of skill pts); extra rogue lvls add more SA & skill pts (at the expense of feats & HPs).

Cool beans, now we have some options.
Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I'd j ust suggest a newer player stay a bit more consistent. Some of the nuance is lost, they take a level at the wrong time, it mucks their skill or BAB progression, etc.

Definitely, both will work.
