View Full Version : Introducing Adepts - a raid mentoring program
protokon
12-11-2011, 05:28 PM
As the game ages, a growing gap between veteran raiders and newer players has put a wedge in our community. In general, pug success rates are down, the amount of LFMs being put up has diminished, and more and more private channels are being created each day.
It was the kindness of power gamers I came across that encouraged me to grow as a player from the wide-eyed newb I once was. 5 years later, I am a well-known, successful raid leader on our server. Seeing how far I have come, it is time I put my knowledge and experience to use and help better the community.
The new mentor program, appropriately labeled Adepts, will be targeted towards newer, inexperienced raiders wanting to break into the raiding world successfully. Whether you want to organize and lead raids, or simply learn how to do those nasty abbot puzzles you never had the chance to master, Adepts is targeted to help the general pugging population as a whole. Adepts will not only give you access to my own knowledge, but an array of experienced, veteran power gamers from my own guild and other endgame guilds on Thelanis.
My primary objective is to teach and train the next generation of raiders and power gamers. A general outline of the program:
RAIDS
forming raid parties
party make ups and screening people
balancing raid groups
assigning roles, buffs and other general leadership duties
how to handle griefing and correct mistakes
anticipating and recovering from errors
puzzle proficiencies
common courtesy and communication ethics
looting norms and ethics
knowing your role and following directions
raid communication
EPICS
general party make ups
how to form and run regular epic quests
scroll farming techniques
REINCARNATION AND LEVELING
planning a leveling path
speed leveling techniques
past life benefits and general character progression
twink gear and tools for successful exp farming
GENERAL
networking the newer generation with the older experienced veterans
increasing the amount of LFM’s and promoting a healthier pugging environment
raising server-wide success rates of raid pugs
provide inexperienced players a means to advance to the endgame community
You are not required to join a guild to participate in the mentor program. The mentor program will consist of an in-game chat channel, web forums and dedicated ventrilo server.
New! Link to our new forums: www.adeptsddo.com (http://www.adeptsddo.com)
Anyone who wishes to participate in our program is more than welcome to request ventrilo and channel access. There is also the option to volunteer as a mentor in the program, sharing your knowledge and experience with the new generation. Several times a month raid seminars will be held to openly discuss raid tactics and techniques, with follow ups of live demonstrations (such as practicing tiles or completing an epic raid)
You can contact me for more information about the program via PM here on the forums, or signing onto my vent directly and paging me.
Adepts vent info:
server: Strontium.typefrag.com
port: 48159
password: piker
Those interested in joining, please sign up on our Forums and request access to the Adepts group. The rest of the information you need will be on our forums. Feel free to contact me on this thread or via PM if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
Edit: Much information has changed recently, including the website and vent server actively being used. Existing members, please update your bookmarks and vent server information accordingly so you log onto the correct ventrilo server.

Different targets I think... but count me for mentoring. i already have a lvl 25 ship for Mentor Program... seems wasteful to start a new one. Can rename the guild if you want to use it. Inferus Adepts Mentor Program?

Appreciate the offer clay, as of now the majority of the program is actually made up of already guilded folks who are just registering on our forums for the events. I will run your offer by vinton and the other volunteers to see what they think, I don't think the guild boat is very important at the moment (considering we have an 85 ship we can invite those guys to anyhow) but I'll get back to you on that one.

great idea .. would be nice to see more pugs succeed in end game content either the more demanding raids or simple epics ...hope it works out and those puggers that r eager and able to learn from the more experienced players and be able to lead or participate in more end game content succesfully.

For those wanting to participate, We've simplified the process on accessing our forums.
Visit our site, www.inferussus.com (http://www.inferussus.com) (and register - it's the exact same type of forums ddo uses, vbulletin) and use the following link:
http://www.inferussus.com/forums/profile.php?do=editusergroups
NOTE: this link is also on our homepage so you don't have to look around for it.
Then simply click on the user group you wish to join, either mentor or member, depending on your intentions with the program. All the information for ventrilo, the chat channel, and access to our forums are done through this.
There's no more need to PM myself or vinton, granting you access is all automatically done now! You can still PM me with questions, comments or concerns though.

Love, love, LOVE this idea. I fall somewhere in the middle of "newbie" and "mentor," meaning I've got three capped toons and have done a fair number of epics and raids but still feel I have a lot to learn and in general wouldn't be comfortable leading any of them.
This is such a great thing to see, as I've been noticing more and more elitism. I recently got turned down for a PUG and dissed simply because the party leader thinks that everyone in my guild is a crappy player (really, more than 200 people and they're ALL crappy?), and general chat is full of people making fun of newbies for asking the kind of questions that EVERY newbie asks. I would love to participate in this in any way I can.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of players out there in your position. If your guild does a poor job at screening players, booting disruptive members, and/or has an open invite policy, it tends to lead to a very bad reputation with the end-game crowd. Although it sucks, you end up guilty by association.
I am hoping to accomplish two main goals with this program: Help people like yourself, who are stuck in between being a competent player and not confident in leading, to get to the next level - and also help people find homes in the end-game community. Spending enough time networking with the endgame crowd may be enough to help you find social groups (chat channels, even a new guild) to better fit your playstyle if endgame raiding is what you truly enjoy. There is also those who are coming to learn how to lead, and plan on going back to their own guilds to better themselves as a group.
Regardless of your intentions, I'm sure the program could help you reach whatever your goals are. The mentor guild is going to be gated and held accountable to certain standards (mostly common sense and common courtesy) to maintain a good image on the server, and in turn it makes it easier for people to get accepted into pugs that other high end guilds put together.
However, regardless of skill level everyone is invited to sign up and attend our workshops and better themselves as raiders/players in general. I already have had a generous amount of mentors sign in ready to help out as well, so am looking forward to getting this rolling.

I'm in full guild groups very often these days - and about 95% of the time when I do pug, it's less than 6 slots which end up getting filled quickly when I put the lfm up, since I also advertise in a few channels.
You'll also see me throw up "free pulls" from epic claws from time to time, since I solo it daily for tokens.

I have not been in a raiding guild since IFV broke up 2 years ago. Been soloing or shortmanning TR's mostly since. I do not need mentoring in older raids(except tiles) or leveling process. I would like to join a raiding/epic guild or at least have access to join some groups to get more experienced. I can mentor the older stuff, but need taught the newer stuff. Would you classify that as mentor or mentoree?
PS: Also plan to do a major inventory clean up during the holidays, anyone planning an event or some other give to newbs method soon?

regarding named loot, I made a post on our forums regarding Inferus Sus' philosophy on raid loot (simply dubbed 'your loot is your loot, loot with a conscience'). I don't force anyone to follow any rules, but I did mention that selling raid loot is generally frowned upon.

I'd definitely suggest that you sign up as a member on our site. If your looking for a large raiding guild, I'd actually suggest dropping an app in for Sus and test driving our runs to see if you like it and if you fit in. But I'll warn you - Sus doesn't chase down applicants, we are a pretty self-sustained guild and
As far as the mentoring thing goes, your not obligated to run anything or learn things you already know - most work will be in the form of workshops, and I plan on beating down the cannith raids with our group once we get the ball rolling. Until then, were already scheduling things like abbot flagging and filling out guides on our forums for references.
Also keep in mind, the Sus ventrilo is public, there is almost always at least 1 or 2 sus members online in it, more during the heavier hours.

I've begun with flagging of specific raids so we at least have you flagged before teaching you the raid so keep an eye out on the sus forums (or my my.ddo page) and if you need the help post there what you need help with. I don't lfm much for it since I get chancers who whine we're taking to long :p
I will be running an abbot this weekend so keep an eye out if you want to learn or help teach.

The more the merrier everyone. That goes for the Vent Channel as well as the program.
After all, you can only get out of this what you are willing to put into it, and the chance to make networking connections with other players is enormous. I was once a very new player without anyone who would show me the ropes, and I have also been that player that even though I knew what I was doing, I couldn't get any breaks cause no on end game knew me.
DDO is like life in that way. It is about who you know, and your reputation.

Abbot puzzle training will take place tomorrow. The goal will be to get as much tile experience/practice in as possible, with people waiting in the que to be practicing the ice puzzle.
people who have never been in the raid will obviously get to try out meteors as well, but the focus will be the other two puzzles.
Refer to the adepts forums for the event time and signup sheet.

I must give props to Protokon about this again, would give some reputation but cannot at the moment.
I have been in a lot of runs, raids, etc over the years. I know how incredibly hard it is to explain what is going to happen and what has to be done to new players. I was never very good at it.
I have had the luck of running my very first Lord of blades with him. I was a bit wary about it since I had never been in it...and he wanted me to tank. Yikes.
However, his explanations were extremely clear, brief and very informative, and I was able to survive tanking it.
I have been on runs with him where new players were present and again, his patience and direction are quite good. I imagine he must be a teacher of some kind.
He, however, had the unluckly chance of me joining another lord of blades raid, on hard, with me not as the tank. I had never been on that side of the battle before and was a dunderhead. People in the party are like 'what are you doing cannon?'...
Yikes.
You new players, these guys are very patient, Proto is very informative. Run with him and learn.
He will not be playing forever, so this may be a limited time, take advantage of it.
And, if you are ever in a run with my toon cannonfodder, and I say 'hold on, I'll be right back' and charge ahead somewhere...NEVER follow me. Ever. Never follow me.
You will die. And in many cases so will I.
Just saying.

Hey there.
There is no gear or experience required to join our program - in many cases, we had players join our group still wearing basic equipment they got out of waterworks, at level 17+. A 15-minute makover of +6 items and greater false life ring fixes most toons to be workable in all raids on normal - the only important aspect in most cases is proper communication.
Anyways, all I ask is that you sign up on our forums, post in our introduction thread, and join our groups whenever you want! We have about 50+ members at the moment, and so far don't intend to set a limit.

Just wanted to say that this group, made up of experienced people from various guilds, is absolutely awesome - great sense of humour, very patient with newbies and good explanations of raids. (Even if some of them are a bit on the lengthy side... ;) At least it helps us to understand what's going on!) Dying repeatedly has never been so much fun... :D
Got my first ever completion of Abbot on any character tonight, on what was expected to be just puzzle practice. Yes, it took a long time, but speed wasn't the object - learning was. And those of us that were new/newish to it learned a lot.
So I want to publicly thank the people involved in this program for making it so much fun, and encourage anyone who might be on the fence about joining to just do it. I'm sure you won't regret it! :)

Abbot training was a lot of fun tonight. The mentors very clearly and patiently explained all the puzzles and what exactly to expect so there would be no surprises.
I encourage everyone who is thinking about joining Adepts but are still a little hesitant about doing raids to check it out. They are making sure that everyone is learning the raids they want and making it a lot of fun in the process.

I just want to thank all of the mentors of this program who have helped me to learn these raids. I have wanted to try and learn the raids for a long time but was always afraid to join groups as most of them say "know it" or something to that extent. This group has truly made learning them fun with all the patience, explaining, and jokes that go on. It's a great feeling to be able to make mistakes and not get your head ripped off and so want to try again. They offer great advice on any subject. I have been part of this group for just over a month and have learned/experienced VOD, HOX, Abbot, MA, and LOB. They have the experienced players do your job the first run thru so you can see how it is done, but allow you to try to tank/kite/or whatever on the second run. Just last night they three and five manned abbot to take you thru the puzzles and then created a party to let you try different "jobs," and amazingly, we were actually able to get a completion by the end of the night (and they didn't say anything negative about me being an air savant)
To anyone out there thinking of joining, do so. You won't regret the learning experience. Not only do they have specific workshops out there, but even when they are pugging they will ask you if you want to join, and you still feel comfortable to do so. They understand, and their guildies/friends running with them understand, that you are new and need a few runs to get the hang of the raid.
I am so thankful this group was started and hope I will be able to be a mentor some day to others.

Probably never would've had the courage to sign up if I hadn't heard good things from a friend, but this program has truly exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Pleasant and patient mentors help you learn the ropes of the raid, and even let you give it a whirl yourself once they've gone over the basics. Sure, there were a number of deaths, but that's just part of the learning experience! At the end of the day, I learned a whole heck of a lot and completed my first true raid (in the Abott, of all places to start!).
If you think that learning how to raid and perform better in game sounds like a good idea but are hesitant about joining, DON'T BE. :) Honestly, I am far from the best player, and had never stepped into, let alone completed, a raid before last night, and that didn't matter at all. Inferus and the Adepts understand that you have to start somewhere and give you the knowledge and experience to get past those first steps. I'm very glad I bucked up and tried them out!

Hey guys,
OP has been updated to reflex some recent changes. We have switched over to our own dedicated forums (which will soon go public for multi-server groups!) and a dedicated vent server exclusively for adepts participants.
Existing members, please check the updated information and sign up on the new boards ASAP. The old boards will soon be removed.

Although we have a healthy amount of active members, we still have more room for growth!
anyone who wants to participate, whether it be once every few weeks or on a daily basis, feel free to sign up on our boards to come and go as you please - no obligation to stick around if you don't like it.
The Adepts chat channel has a healthy, positive attitude towards answering questions and grouping. anyone who will contribute to this, regardless of experience level, are more than welcome to hang out.

nice! I saw your pending request to join the adepts groups on our boards and approved it for ya - feel free to make an introductory post there, and hop into the in-game chat channel. there's stuff going on almost all times of the day.

This is one of the reasons that Thelanis is the best guild in the game. There is by far a larger population of helpful people on this server than anywhere else. Thelanis has always been and will always be the server which fosters the best endgame on any of the other servers. After playing on 5 out of 8 servers I wonder why I ever left.

What a shame I hadn't seen this before. I'd like to join as well- it's hard to get in difficult raid parties when you're new. (VIP has been recently purchased...)

Signed up, love the initiative. We could use a bit more cooperation and friendlyness in the game.
Don't play that superfrequent anymore but I could help out in most traditional raids. Not too familiair with Cannith raids and CitW.

Hey guys,
just a quick update the adepts website is currently down. I have no ETA on how long until it is re-upped, but I am working on revamping it entirely to make it a bit friendlier. My new goal with the site is to give a nice detailed, yet not overwhelming overview of major game mechanics to help people introduce their friends to the game.
The forums will come back, but unfortunately due to problems with the host, the backups may have been lost. more soon!

We do occasionally run it. usually its because cryo twists my arm until I give in.
As for my return, yes I will be returning to the game actively tomorrow :) I have 3 days off of work in a row, I will be trying to both reorganize my toon roster and start serious work on the site again/look into the hosting issues that started last week.

Usually, some of us mentors will announce something in the channel if we have spots in their guild CitWs (or any other raid/quest), but Adepts hasn't actually tried scheduling a routine CitW yet. Something I've been thinking about is possibly having an Adepts weekend raid night dedicated to the newest raids like LoB, MA, CitW, and FoT. Something to help people get comfortable with the new stuff. And because we like having 11 people get to see how much Protokon hates Lolth.

Apparently, I haven't twisted your arm enough. And are you sure you didn't take a page out of Turbine's book and forget to keep the domain license paid off? :D

The funny part is, I have the domain paid off for another 5 years :D It's just the hosting that is having an issue.

No one has to have my permission. As long as nobody joins the channel to be purposefully disruptive, they are welcome. We have had this channel as (roughly) open access for a year and not once have I seen any complaints or drama, and we've never had to reform it. I sure hope it stays that way!

Hi,
My main toon is a rogue (first life, level 15 but almost 2 levels banked) and I played mainly solo till now (My guild is build up by friends who don't play much and when we play together there isn't a lot working together, but they are fun times, so not that bad) I really want to start more in groups and raids but want to build up some confidence first. Very intrested to join the learning programs.
and thanks for creating an oppertunity to the community like this off course

We generally have people on at all hours of the day. I would say our "peak" hours are probably 6pm-9pm eastern U.S. (turbine time) after most people are off of work.

I'm in a 6 person guild that is 'enjoying the scenery' ie not power gamers, zerg or multi TR's and we are flagging for raids but we are too small to raid on our own. We don't want to drag down a typical PUG nor have to rush through to keep up. This sounds like an excellent place to start, since most of us have not done any of the raid quests. Also sounds like a place to find some like minded people to raid with on a continuing basis. Would it be possible to get all of us in a 'class' at once?

Sure, that could work. What time slot would work best for your group? Right now, I think friday, saturday and sunday night is open for me (around 9-10pm eastern).
Also, what content would you like to go over? If your looking to overview some of the older raids, I would say pick two to start with, so your group is not overwhelmed. I am known for over-explaining things a tad bit, so I would say expect 30-45 mins per raid, if not longer.
