View Full Version : Does the Ring of Lies have a hidden property which increases threat?

Some Non-official (http://itemwiki.cubicleninja.com/Items/ItemDetails.aspx?itemID=197) sources suggest that the Ring of Lies from the Reaver's Fate raid has a hidden effect which does the following: <<Hidden Effect: Increases all threat by 15%>>.
The existence of this effect is taken into account in some threads in these forums. I am not sure if this is an urban legend, or hoax, or if this was found out by testing.
Is there any clue which gives a backup on this claim?
Would anyone of the Devs mind clarifying this?

I am also curious.
How could a player even test this?

Here's a test proposal.
1. Take two identically built melees, and equip them with weapons which have a bad crit profile*. Equip them with a lot of extra damage which comes from dices, but not from crits. This should offer a steady dps output with a damage distribution pretty narrow around the average damage. No guards allowed.
2. One of them has an empty ring slot, the other one is wearing the ring of lies.
3. Get to a high-hp, easily accessible mob with a reliable aggro pattern. Such as Sobrien.
4. ???
5. Profit!
*If I am overestimating the impact of crits to a narrow propability distribution, please let me know; I'm not that good in statistics.

...and now the wiki contains that information as well. Because "anecdotally it feels like that" to Shade. :/
Any comment on this item is much appreciated.

So this was moved, yet there was no other input?

Here's a test proposal.
Bring a cleric, and have them cast Harm on an enemy. Have someone with the ring punch the enemy with a scroll in their hand, power attack off, no rage, etc. That way, you can see at what point aggro switches to the melee. Record it with FRAPS or whatever to so the damage numbers can be added up and compared.

I have a shinny new Ring of Lies on my Bard and I have not noticed any change in threat. I have noticed that my pickup lines work much better though.

Alternatively, get someone without any threat modifiers to beat epic Sobrien to 40ish% HP, then have someone without any threat mod but a ring of lies to see if he can steal aggro.

Alternatively, get someone without any threat modifiers to beat epic Sobrien to 40ish% HP, then have someone without any threat mod but a ring of lies to see if he can steal aggro.
The design of the test is nice, as you only need to take care of threat gear, and everything else somehow solves itself.
However, 40% of his health is actually too much. Assuming that Sobrien has 100 HP, and the amont amount of HP taken away by the prepper is 60 HP. The one with the ring of lies has now 40 HP to chop away. In order to having dealt more (threat-enhanced) damage than the 60 HP, the threat-enhancer would need to be +50% or more, since 40*1.5 = 60.
But, if you prepped him to exactly 50%, then the prepper would deal an effective amount of 50*1.15= 57.5 HP, resulting in a switch of aggro at about 7.5% of his health.
Let me illustrate the whole situation with a nice piece of ascii art, depicting Sobrien's HP bar:
==========
The green part is the amount of HP, which is chopped away by the prepper. We'll call this amount Y.
The Red and Yellow parts together are the amount of HP which is chopped away by the one who wears the ring of lies. We'll call these parts R and Y. The border between R and Y marks the point where aggro switches from the prepper to the Liar.
If we assume that (for simplicity) Sobrien has 100 HP, then
R + Y + G = 100.
Also, since the hypothesis is that the ring has +15% threat, we have Y*(1.15) = G, or Y = G/(1.15)
This can help us to determine at which point the giant will switch aggro, once we have him prepped (given G, what's R), or to determine the amount of prepping required (given G, what's R).
Plugging Y = G/(1.15) into the equation above, we get
R + G/1.15 + G = 100, which means (with 1/1.15 = 0.8696) that
G = (100 - R)/1.8696, or equivalently
R = 100 - 1.8696*G.
So, if we prep him to 50% (G = 50), he's going to switch aggro at roughly 7.5% of his total health.
And, if we want him to switch aggro at 10% (R = 10), then we need to take away only 48% of his HP, leaving him at 52%, as the Liar starts to attack.
