I decided to give DDO a try after becoming bored with other games. I read a few posts that recommended making a Fighter until one gets used to DDO's style of combat. I made a Human Fighter and I am enjoying the game so far (level 3). However, as I read more and more, I realized that I may have gimped myself for the future, because numerous people have said that Turbine's pre-determined builds are terrible and that the Human Fighter is missing a feat at level 1. I am going to reroll this character and I am probably going to follow http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p=2801751&postcount=17 closely. I would like to keep being a two-handed fighter although I am open to being two-weapon instead. Although I welcome any advice my biggest question is probably in regards to enhancements. For example, Fighter Haste Boost I:
Usage: Active
Cost: 1 action point
Available to Fighter class level 1
Activate this ability to receive a 15% Action Boost attack speed bonus for 20 seconds.
I don't know what "Action Boost" means or what "Cost: 1 action point" means. I guess I can follow the above post in regards to which enhancements to get at which levels. Still, any help would be very appreciated as I get to know this great and complex game.

Hi there and welcome back. About the action points and boosts. You might have noticed that every time when you gain a rank (a colored dot in the bar with 5 dots) you also gain an action point (except when you level). You can talk to a trainer to buy enhancements with these points. Some enhancements have several tiers, some cost more than others, some are prerequisites for others... for exact information about all enhancements you might want to check out the DDO wiki at http://ddowiki.com/
The action boost you are talking about is such an enhancement. So if you spent 1 action point at a trainer to buy 'fighter haste boost I' you can drag this ability from your character panel: enhancement tab to your hotbar. You now can use this ability 5 times per rest and it does exactly what it says: if you click it you will attack faster for 20 seconds.

Starting with a fighter is a great idea. Believe it or not the pre-made paths were actually implemented only recently and are largely the result of the general consensus of the people on the forums so actually there is not much difference.
My recommendation is to either go with a pre-made path or choose things that are interesting to you. Unfortunately some of the best things in the game are largely frowned upon by the most vocal forum posters and therefore curiously enough they are also not included in the paths. There is kind of a forum 'conglomerate' that is made up of grindy type people who are constantly calculating what the supposed best of everything and these people multiply daily with new players who listen and follow by using their 'builds' etc and spreading the 'word' so to speak. There is actually quite a bit of very interesting and many times better ways to make your character than the 'builds' that are littered all over the forums. If you spend enough time compiling and comparing the builds that people put on the forums you'l find that the vast majority of them select the exact same things. There are many great things in the game that are quire literally never included in these builds. And more interestingly when the premade paths came out, they were almost taken directly from what was littered all over the forums (i.e. the premade characters or builds). Of course the forums went up in flames over it and it is hard to not read a post without these 'paths' being lambasted in one way or another by the player base.
Starting with a fighter is a great idea, and believe it or not the premade paths are pretty much the same as what your getting with the builds from the player base (although they'd never admit it)
My suggestion is to customize your character and try to pick some things out that interest you and maybe research what the feats do on the wiki before finalizing your selections. Trust me its always alot more enjoyable to discover things on your own than to follow someone's instructions on how to 'play the game'.
As the other guy said you get 1 Action Point per Rank... there are 5 Ranks to a lvl.... So although you may need 5,000 xp to reach lvl 2 you will get an Action Point to spend at each 1000 xp. You buy abilities and bonuses from the trainer using the Action Points... (if you buy Fighter haste boost you drag the icon from the character sheet enhancement tab to a shortcut bar and then you can assign a button to use it in the key mapping in the Options.

The OP was refering to the actual IN-GAME pre-made paths...their useless the ones you refering to are basically the"fixed version of those

There are 5 ranks to a level yes but only 4 action points per level.. This is from the ddo wiki>>>>>
Action Points (APs) are points gained in the process of increasing in level. You can the spend those points into enhancements. However, you must meet the progression and any prerequisite there is, otherwise you won't be able to pick the desired enhancement.
Enhancements cost from one to six Action Points. For this reason, you do not lose your action points when leveling up. As of Module 3.3, you can have as many enhancements as you want. Upgrades of the same enhancement replace previous versions. However, you need the previous version of an enhancement to make its highest version available to your character.
You receive an action point at ranks 1, 2, 3 and 4, for a total of four action points per level. At the level cap (20), there are no ranks. You instantly gain the last four Action Points for a final total of 80.
Hope that helps also Humans start with 2 some what normal feats and 1 class feat>>>> This may better help you out http://ddowiki.com/page/Fighter

I stumbled onto this thread, and it has helped me a lot. It gave me a better understanding of where my alts are headed. It is somewhat outdated now, but still worth a look.

Also, for information on making plat in-game, I recommend:

I also recommend rjcyberware.com for an easy-to use character planner to see how your proposed build will look at cap.
