main things i want from it are:

stunning fist (and to-hit to use it)
strong casting
decent ac

my playstyle:

past 2 lives have been pure monk and a phoenix build (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=308396). i run the simplest epics occasionally but mainly like to level. i have a reasonable amount of decent gear.

any suggestions welcome.

why weapon finesse? your dexterity won't be that high compared to your strength base, and much easier to get + strength items

well that part of my problem you see. i can't reconcile wanting to be casting, stunning, in melee range for bursts and aura's without worrying about not being decent enough. also whilst there are more str bonuses i'm not taking power attack so no -5 (equivilant to +10 dex with finess)

dex is to help ref saves and ac as well as go twf...

i haven't taken the twf feats as i was worried of going too melee focused on the build but can swap a toughness and some thing else for the first 2 tiers.

if it wasn't for stunning i'd not bother with any melee feats and just go caster but i like that stunning puts me with the melees and adds to my CC abilities.

No reason you can't dump strength to 8 and put the extra points into charisma for DMIII. The +6 damage from DMIII makes up for the lack of strength/PA and gives a considerable AB boost to help land those stuns. The extra uses of turn undead can either be used for DM or for bursts which provides more SP for offensive casting (as appropriate).

I would definitely switch to half-elf for rogue/paladin dilettante. Rogue will be idea for leveling as the extra sneak attack against stunned mobs will really help DPS and +4 reflex save vs traps and dexterity enhancement are very welcome too. Paladin is an option for epics to get reflex save up.

I would definitely switch from 3 monk to 2 monk / 1 fighter. You want to use all your Ki for stunning fist and as you don't get auto crits against held/stunned enemies anymore Ki will be a limited resource. Light Side buffs will be of limited use due to difficulty in chaining moves inbetween healing/casting and FoL has been nerfed (based on monk level instead of character level) so isn't worth it. On the other hand, fighter gives an extra feat (so you don't lose anything switching to half-elf) and gives haste boost I (which is an awesome burst damage combo with versatility: damage).

thanks wax, hadn't even considered DM, though i think you're talkign about the Divine Power spell for the BAB increase, Divine Might is a +dmg only. speaking of to hit i'll also have +3 from Divine Favour (as well as another +3 damage (luck)). that said shouldn't i still keep some strength to help against debuffs?

hmm... thinkign about those spells i'll probably want to take extend too...

also i understand your point about ki managment vs fighter benefits... one thing is having run a phoenix build i've quite a lot of heal amp gear so even while the light finisher may not be worth much i'll be healling for 3-6 hp per hit (with vampic wraps).

also, whilst probably not that great the last update gives waterstance +1 ki generation which will be my main stance i'd think.

on my phoenix build (15 pal/ 3 mnk/ 2 fighter) i use healing fists and finishers regularly as well as fire/water/wind/strikes without issue (firestance though) so running stun and healing fists with the odd finisher shouldn't be too taxing...

oh and i don't have h-elf =/

Having also just made a Clonk (Human), I'm quite interested in this thread too.

Right now, the concept is to go something like 8 Monk/12 Cleric or perhaps 1 FTR/7 Monk/12 Cleric with an eye towards being a 'combat medic' if you will- on the front lines fighting with Radiant Aura going, the ability to cast in-melee buffs and damage spells and, in a pinch, to perhaps back up a healing-focused Cleric/FvS with Heal and the like. I already have a pure light-spec Monk and two healer-type Clerics so what I'm interested in here is a bit more diversity in playstyle.

I have this kind of character. Halfling, dex and wis based. I started with 6STR (but a bit more CON) and its fine. I melee for ki and monk buffs, not for dps.
In AC gear, i was able to reach 90+AC, i should be able to break 100 with a pali defender, but thats not really important, coz 90+ is enough for everything non epic.
CC or instakill spells land on epic, but i have to choose my targets wisely. First life build, so spell pen past lifes are out.
Stunning fist DC at 46 without yugo pots. With past lifes, yugo pot and with the new belt, it could be 55.

So pretty fun but also hard to play with. :)

so in short: first monk, then 17cleric, then 2 more monk.
Must have feats: Toughness, stunning fist, empo healing, maximize, weapon finess, Quicken, Heighten
Not so important feats: Extend, Dodge
