I'm a fairly new guild leader, and I was informed by some members that having inactive members can degrade guild renoun...what's it all about?

If the game considers them inactive (1 month shown since last log on) they are not counted in renown decay calculations, and removing them would count as a "recent departure" for 2 weeks and will then add to the modified account sized used to calculate decay.
Removing inactives worsens decay.

Here's the wiki's article on guild renown : http://ddowiki.com/page/Guild_Renown.
You may want to check the forums also. There's been a lot of this talked about. Unfortunately, Turbine doesn't give you an owner's manual when you buy a forum charter. Best of luck with your guild.
