I have a lv 6 AA ranger (w/prestige) and was wondering if i could multiclass into wizard/sorcerer? (my wis is pretty good, 15 with a +2 if i remember correctly)

splashing 1 level of wizard is pretty common and you can pick up extend with the feat you will get to make some of your buffs last longer.

I don't recommend more than that though.
Don't bother with sorc splash.

It's possible, yes, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. :) Multiclassing should usually be planned in advance. What exactly do you want out of this char?

Don't know if the OP meant Int when he wrote Wis. If you are splashing into Wizard, you need at least a modest Intelligence score.

I agree with an earlier responder. Multiclassing is best done when planned out ahead of time.

well the ranger capstone sucks anyways - though the extra favored enemy isn't bad.
There are lots of splash options though... my favorite is barb for rangers. most like fighter, and if you take it early you can hit traps with a rogue splash.

The ranger capstone sucks. Unless you're a ranged character Like, say, an Arcane Archer?

OP - Don't multiclass. You will want atleast 18 Ranger levels to get the cornerstone ability of Arcane archers - Slaying Arrows. Plus, a nifty side bonus of returning +5 arrows (Which make using +1 bows of does-totally-awersome-stuff really fun :D).

Additionally, the Ranger capstone is AMAZING for ranged focused characters. Granted, everything about the description of this ability is flat our wrong... it is *not* an enhancement bonus, because it stacks with every other type of ranged-attack speed increase (There are many tests done on this matter, and from what i have seen none have foun the capstone to be non-stacking). It is also closer to 12.5% attack speed increase rather than 25%. Booo. But that is still a flat 12.5% increase to damage, as well as special bow effects and proc chances! Believe me, the speed change between 19 and 20-with-capstone is immediately noticeable.

Sidenote: i know this was not asked, but 15 wisdom is a lot for a level 6 ranger, especially of the AA variety. Rangers only ever need 14 wisdom (including tomes, buffs, and equipment) to cast every spell they know. Starting at 8 and equipping a +6 item is enough to get you full-casteriness from your Ranger levels. Newer players may want to start at 10, for easier access to spells while leveling due to gear limitations/aquisition. Additional points in wisdom give very little in the SP department, and offer little benefits to anything else. Likewise, AAs are strapped for stat points since both strength and dex are so important to them, while wante dyoru standard 14 startign con + items.

However, worst case scenario - get yourself to 20, enjoy that lovely capstone, and then if you want to redo your build, TR. You can be a bowbarian, kensai Archer, Helves angel, or even pure ranger again, and have a delicious +2 to ranged damage to take with ya :D

I think that you should not.

My reasons are that I believe you do not yet know enough about the game to understand the benefits and consequences of doing that.

I say just play what you have for awhile, research, learn...gain some experience. Then make some decisions later when you are (more) sure of what you want.

I'm going to agree with Talon on this. Stay pure, learn the class and the game. The ranger capstone and slayer arrows will give you among if not the best burst DPS in the game. Why give that up for a few SP and a splash-class specific feat? Obtain or craft a Power or Wizardry item if you really want the extra SP.

Once again these people are giving you advice based on when your lvl 18 or 20 and god forbid you end up in one of their raids. It is not based on your enjoyment of the game its based on their narrow minded view point. You should definitely take a few wizard levels if that interests you. It could be six months or 4 or 5 new characters before you ever even reach lvl 18 to worry about the 'consequences' that you are being 'advised' about by people who go from level 1 to lvl 20 in a day or two. Be young. enjoy life, discover on your own. There are hundreds of low level quests where taking a few wizard levels and discovering all the new spells will be extremely 'useful'. :o The reason you are being 'advised' against it is because it won't be 'time and resource efficient' if you end up in one of their raids at lvl 20. So they figure they need to nip the 'problem' in the bud along with 98% of discovering and enjoying an infinite range of possibilities that are actually QUITE feasible and work quite well in 100's of low mid and even high level quests. If it doesnt fall into one of their premade 'builds' they will always 'advise' against it.

dont multi-class your arcane archer, lvl20 ranger makes your bow fire faster, which is worth a LOT to an archer!

in general its best not to multi-class any character on the fly, waaay too easy to make some big mistakes. think of it this way, you can only be lvl20, so if you want to be two classes that means you'll never get the lvl20 abilities of either class. its very important to know what high level abilities you will loose compared to what you will gain, in your example you'd loose a great attack speed bonus for next to no gain (a lvl1 wizard wont be much use at lvl20).
