View Full Version : P2P VS F2P VS Premium

I'm thinking of subbing this month, and was curious what all I would gain by going from premium to P2P. Only things I have bought are Monk (got an extra character slot with it, free I guess) Warforged & Artificer. Also have a total of 4 character slots.
I know monk & warforged are part of the P2P package, only a little too late though.
I know of the Adventure Packs, and from what I've read, they are all accessible by P2P accounts
But can or has someone made/make a thread that shows what all is F2P, Prem & P2P
Or at least let me know what all I have left to get just for subbing, without having to spend turbine points. Like classes, races, more character slots for subbing, the 32 Pt. build(unsure if P2P or buy only), etc
AND ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING!!!
How much of this do I lose if I revert back to Prem in the future... like, say I had a purchase race with a normal class, on a slot from P2P (if you get extra), do I lose said character completely (like a delete), is the toon just set inlockdown until I make room for him with my accessible slots, or do I keep him completely, but lose the slot he was in once he gets deleted.
Thank you for your time

There are 3 categories in DDO: VIP, Premium (p2p), and Free (f2p). When folks say P2P, they usually mean premium. You're only confusing others and yourself when you used P2p to mean VIP.
The differences between all 3 are clearly explained and shown on this page:

Hmm, looking good, but what all do I lose if I drop back to prem in the future, like if I have more than 4 toons without buying extra slots, do they delete themselves, do I have to choose which are to be deactivated, or straight out deleted?
making sure because I finally got extra money to do this, but need clarification in case I can't do it next month
And what of the 32 pt build, considering I didn't see anything on it, I am left to believe it is purchase only, correct?

Ok, let me add more than.
VIPs gain access to all quests and premium races and classes. Certain favour classes i.e. FvS and Artificers will not be available to VIPs. Similarly favour items such as 32-point built and Veteran status will also not be available. If you want to obtain those items without grinding favour, you will need to buy them from the store. If unlocked by favour, it will only be available for that server. If bought from the DDO store, it will be available on all servers.
When you downgrade from VIP back to Premium, you will those items which are not bought or unlock by favour. You will only have 4 character slots, unless you have bought additional ones. If your have more than 4 characters, you will be asked to select 4 characters to play when you log in. If you delete any character later, the slot will open again and you can select another character. Note that you will not be able to select classes which has Warforged, Monk splashes, Half-Elf, Half-orc unless you have bought them from the DDO store.
Hope this clears it up. Here's a good guide on easing the downgrade from VIP to premium.

I'm getting ready to start playing this game again (last time I played was around it's initial release). Would I be missing out on anything going the F2P route while I confirm my interest in playing this game? I'm not shy of going the premium route after interest is confirmed of course. Is the game still a pick up game centric MMO? As in I can play for short stints and get my monies worth?
Also some advice on what characters make the transition to premium well would be handy, granted part of the pleasures of a DnD world is learning how to play your character but it would be a shame to retire my F2P character if I choose to go all out.
As for VIP I think I would have to be sold on that aspect as it reeks of being as rewarding as kissing your sister. Seeing how I have no sisters and only a brother my imaging of that is kinda awkward at best.
Advice would be nice thanks (thread highjack).
edit: swap premium and VIP placements apparently, sorry bro it's the whiskey.

The game is good enough to play as F2P. You will not be able to access certain races (Half-elf, half-orc,WF,) and classes (monk). You can certainly have enough quests to go up to lvl 10-ish, and that's where content start to taper off, and you will need access to adventure packs to continue on.
However, you can grind TP (every 100 favour earns you 25 TP) to buy for the packs etc. There are countless threads on how to farm favour/TP, so you can go that route if you want. Or you can opt for Premium to buy what you only want.
My advice is to go VIP for a while to get a feel of the whole game. Then after that you can choose to continue as VIP or downgrade to premium. Currently there is an offer of $29.97 for 3 months, which is quite a good deal IMO.

Grinding is out, I'm not a grinding sort. So your advice would be to go F2P to get used to the game, then go VIP to get an idea of the entire game and maybe dabble in premium if you find a focus you like? Or F*** the F2P VIP is cheap enough and decide from there?

Step 1: Level a character up to level 15 on FTP content (easy to do).
Step 2: Make a character on every server and get to 100 favour (can be alternated with step 1).
Step 3: Buy Vale of Twilight with your bonus points.
Step 4: Level original character to 20 and raid repeatedly, perhaps make an alt to level up.
Step 5: Wait for a double bonus points sale on the $50 TP pack and buy one.
Step 6: Wait for sales when adventure packs are on sale at 50% off and buy important adventure packs.
Step 7: When other important account options are on sale at 50% off pick those up too with spare points (shared bank, monk class, WF/Helf/Horc races).
I did something along these lines and own the whole game for $75 and still have 3k TP's in the bank waiting for this years christmas sales. That said, I'm still going to end up paying Turbine a hell of a lot as I've decided to move to Khyber as it is the defacto aussie server.

If you can afford to, I'd certainly suggest to go VIP straightaway to get a feel of the entire game. It was just that your OP asked if you were missing out much by going F2P, and my answer is that you won't feel that a lack of content (quests/adventures) until level 10-ish, other than access to few classes and races.
I too went VIP as I'm not the grinding kind, nor am I patient enough to wait and track the sales of TP and quests/packs/races/classes (e.g. as suggested by wax_on_wax_off above). If you are the patient and penny-pinching kind, there are guides or other players who can advise you better on going the Premium route.
