I was running a quest the other night and noticed an oddity on my monk for the first time ever. The 2-3 oozes around me quickly turned into 20-25 oozes. I thought it a bug but got to thinking about it today and I am speculating that the added pierce damage from the cove gloves could very well be the culprit. I am unable to test it right now but wanted to put that out there in case anyone else was curious why bludgeon damage was splitting the oozes.

You are correct in that the gloves also provide a d4 of piercing which splits up oozes. It's actually good thing for monks. Baby oozes provide more ki than one big one. They probably can't really touch you anyway, so pound away.

I was PUGging on my monk several months, shortly after acquiring the gloves, and the leader was being a bit of a pompous know-it-all for the whole quest. So, we get to some oozes, and I start splitting them, and he starts going stark raving bonkers. "STOP USING BLADED WEAPONS! YOU'RE SPLITTING THE OOZES! STOP IT!"... and blaming everyone 'cept me. 'Cause I was clearly just punching 'em.
Few minutes later, more oozes... splitting like crazy. And he goes nuts again. "Hey, don't look at me, I'm a monk, I'm just punching 'em upside the, er, oozy bit!" And the whole time I was cackling gleefully and watching my ki meter rise.
But yeah, the piercing bit will split most oozes, which isn't a bad thing from a monk's standpoint. Sure, it'll take a bit longer to clean up, but as long as you don't split 'em so much that the dungeon alert goes off (which shouldn't be a problem if you've been cleaning up behind you) it's probably actually LESS dangerous than fighting one giant ooze.

I've been wondering about that for a while now. I just figured that it's been so long since I played a melee character that I wasn't remember correctly what caused oozes to split.
Now that I know... well, I'm certainly not taking off my gloves just to fight an ooze... oh well.

Worst part about the brawlers is that they DO NOT bypass piercing DR, but split the oozes from the piercing damage. Last time the cove was around I tried to no avail to get the devs to comment if it was wai. So I guess its just one more IED in the minefield of monk bugs. . .

Silly question but I ask it anyway: did you bug report (http://forums.ddo.com/new_bug.php) it?

If it isn't working that way, I think of all the monk bugs not getting the full 1d4 isn't that big a deal.

The most interesting part about the brawlers is that the piercing damage is NOT reduced by DR, such as the slashing DR of zombies. On the other hand, the piercing damage of a Spiked Shield is affected by zombie DR.
