Are the hireling's (at least cleric and Fvs) getting more martial. I mean if i have my hireling set to defend me why does it go looking for trouble. I woyuldn't complain but i solo alot and hireling's running off and getting in trouble just f***'s me up.
Thank's for the rant, sorry.

For me, putting them in offensive stance causes them to act like they are supposed to in defensive stance.

Hirelings atm are proper borked.
I took some screen shots yesterday of a run I did with a hireling. She ran way off into the blackness of the map having a row with all and sundry and getting herself killed.
Done another run in schemes of the enemy with one and at the end fight she kept dropping down to the middle floor and trying to fight 7-8 defenders.... she died 3 times then i left her and completed it without.... such a noob deserves a backpack ride lol

Yeah they are pretty FUBAR right now.
Some things I've found helpful:
1. Do not summon them in an explorer zone if you are going into a quest. Wait until you get into the quest. I have had problems with them doing NOTHING when summoned in a zone and then going into a quest. Won't follow orders, attack, heal, nothing. This doesn't happen if you wait until inside the quest to summon.
2. Put them in aggressive mode, then put them in defensive mode. This seems to help a bit to prevent their newfound love of zerging. They will sometimes actually stay close and not run off to prove ow leet they are.
3. Leave them as far away as possible, and then bring them up after a fight. I know it's not always possible for tough fights, but leaving them way the hell out in the middle of nowhere will keep them safe. So do it if you can.

Was in a group last night where the lvl 14 FvS hire ran out of mana 2 mins into the quest, and again 2 mins after shrine. Why? Overhealing? nope. Cometfall. The idiot healer hire, set to defend, was wasting comets on single bats, single dogs, everything. One comet after another, too busy dropping comets to heal its master even ONCE, and of course forget a rez... The horror stories continue

Really I almost hope they just leave them alone. Every time they "improve" the AI it gets worse.
HEAL ONLY MODE!!
PLEASE!!
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY!!!
WE NEED IT!!

I wish they had left them alone, as well. I had finally learned to successfully operate with the hireling AI, and now they change it in a way that gives you less control over their actions.

My favorite so far is in the Missing quest on my 12 Fighter. I got to the part where you go down the well to flip the switch and it spawns a crapload of mobs. I took my healer, went back into the ally, put her on STAY and then put her on PASSIVE!!!! so that she wouldn't do ****. All I needed was to protect her until I killed everything and then just get a top off.
I thought having her behind me, in a one-way alley with me covering the front was right proper tactics!
Well, The fight starts and what happens. My STAY, and PASSIVE hireling runs up in front of me, right into the middle of the pack of renders i'm fighting, turns and stares at me.
because of the renders stinky area thing they do, it looked like she was being riddled by a machine gun.
dink, dink, dink, dink, dink, dink...DING!!! Dead.
Unbelievable. It's like the passive worked, but the Stay command didn't.

Hirelings are on strike. If you put them on any mode they rebel. If you want them to do stuff they refuse. Kinda like hurding cats.

And to add insult to injury, when I am on my Cleric toon, I get a fighter hireling, and I expect the hireling to rush forward and do the heavy duty head bashing. Well, there are times when I have to run up and hit the monster myself to get the hireling to start fighting. On active, I should not have to beg the hireling to go after the monsters.

I love stories about hirelings acting comically stupid. It always puts a smile on my face. Thanks!

Like many of u i use hirelings, i have run the entire dreaming dark with klin, farming essences and runing dreaming dark and he was the same ol klin i trusted with my life as many other times even on d-dark he was top, heal me.. u got it chief!.. summon hezrou.. right away boss XD.. i set him on defensive and pasive as i see fit, dreaming dark entire quest on agresive, he was top notch.
I also summon the lv 20 favored when i run my daily epic claw, cant beat a 20 minute deathward without giving free tokens outta pity to a real healer imo.. i set him on hold ground agresive and block the warlock so i can niac him to death.. ur wish is my command :)... i get hit for 100 per boulder the warlock toss, the favored always toss me a heal without doubt, ofc after i kill the warlock i just put him on pasive and forget about him till completion but during the first fight he without a doubt is behaving correctly, doesnt burn sp, dont go zerging ahead, heal me and my xoriat criters.
Caraneth on the other hand got her A.I broken, still helpful, but burn her sp and chug her pots like there is no tomorrow, i kinda undertand her she only has 1 hour to live, am guessing after she found out, she got a deathwish.

I wanted to do the Vile Apothecary quest solo, so I hired some gold seal hirelings to make a party of 4. Complete waste of points. They would continually stand in pools of acid, or other dangerous areas until they died. It seems to me that it would be an easy bit of coding to make them NOT stand in places where they take damage.
Basic issue with the game is the game engine. As far as I can tell, they are still using the Baldur's Gate game engine, which even at the time was not a good piece of coding. Until they change this, it will be like Whack A Mole, fixing one problem only creates others.
