WHEN:

The Tyrs Paladium guild's Veterans Day Ceremony is held each year on November 11th on Ghallanda. This year the ceremony commences on FRIDAY, November 11th, precisely at 3 PM EST and again at 10:00 PM EST.

WHERE:

We will meet this year on the Ghallanda server, in House Deneith, in the Temple of the Sovereign Host. I've created a minimap for those who may be newish to the game and not know where it is:

http://oi55.tinypic.com/334tcva.jpg

WHY:

We will be honoring the brave men and women from the armed forces of the United States, as well as honoring those from all peaceful nations that we are proud to call our friends. This is a worldwide event. In DDO, we share this unique bond, regardless of server, guild, player level, player skill or lack thereof.

DEDICATION:

We will be dedicating this multi-server event to the victims of 9/11. Those who worked in the towers, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania, the first responders, Fire, Police, EMTs, Coast Guard, all the civilian volunteers, and others far too many to mention.

--------------------------***--------------------------

THE CEREMONY:

We will begin our ceremony with a short poetry recital, proceed with a "Parade of Colors," view two short custom videos created by the Tyrs Paladium guild (be sure to have your browser of choice open in the background, ready to cut CTRL-C & paste CTRL V the links in to view with the group), then end our ceremony with our unique version of the "21 Gun Salute", honoring veterans and veteran organizations, and those we've lost throughout the World.

Feel free to wear your most COLORFUL outfits!!! The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces, and from other peace-seeking nations throughout the World. Please be respectful, as some who come, have lost family and friends and appreciate our moment of shared-silence, remembrance, and brotherhood. Other nations use various designations such as "Poppy Day" or "Armistice Day" instead of Veterans Day. We openly welcome the Euro community to join us, as well as any non-American, non-European that finds value in what we will be doing.

Our guild's last two Veteran's Day ceremonies were made public, and we were humbled by the response each time. This year, we continue our mission, and seek the support of anyone who has a desire to show their support of the troops from ALL PEACEFUL NATIONS, together with your fellow gamers we've spent so much time with playing with.

Like last year, the video stream of our entire event will be sent to my long time buddy Jim Leary and his unit in Kabul, Afghanistan, who will in turn ensure it gets passed around to his many, many brothers and sisters serving in harms way.

--------------------------***--------------------------

We highly recommend that you give a little bit of your time and resources to your local community's veteran's association/organization if you are able. Veterans and their families can benefit directly in various ways.

One of my favorite organizations set up to support the victims of 9/11 was this one set up BY the victims of 9/11.

http://www.familiesofseptember11.org/images/logo.gif

This year we'll also be sending our video to the nonprofit organization "Families of September 11 (http://www.familiesofseptember11.org/default.aspx)", a nonprofit organization founded in October 2001 by families of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Membership is open to anyone affected by the events of September 11, be they family members, survivors, responders, or others as well as those who support their mission.

The group has two goals:

To support families and children by offering updated information on issues of interest, access to resources, relevant articles, and advocacy to raise awareness about the effects of terrorism and public trauma.
To champion domestic and international policies that respond to the threat of terrorism including support for the 9/11 Commission Recommendations, and to reach out to victims of terror worldwide.

--------------------------***--------------------------

Feel free to share our experience with others, so that the hearts and souls of the soldiers we hold within can be appreciated by the masses.

God bless, and hope to see a few of you drop by.

You can post a new thread and start new event about pretty much anything you want, at whichever time you prefer.

The method of gathering is irrelevent.
It is about the honor and respect shown our veterans, past and present.

You'll note that the times allow for folks to also attend any RL events in their area if they so choose, so it's not like it's tryng to take the place of those.

...
OP seems make it for their countrymen, about his countrymen (I assume he's American).

I see he's already amended the OP in response to this. But before making any inaccurate assumptions, watch the vid(s) from previous years. Never was it presented as to only be an American-only honoring, tho it is mainly an American holiday.

I'll gladly address both points.

Don't you think that they deserve something more than meeting in video game?

Quite a few of the people that show to our events are actual military, family of, or friends of current or past military, which means they also go to events or support organizations in their communities IRL. The goal of our event is not only to bring as many of these folks together as possible, but to attract others that might be interested in sharing their company and giving their support and gratitude. I can tell you my personal high is achieved when I hear from a veteran that he never thought something like this can happen in a video game. We know its only digital Vellrad, but we put a personal touch to it, and very much recommend that they contribute to veterans organizations in their neighborhood.

Indeed Veteran's Day falls on November 11 in the United States and is the reason we host the event on this particular day each year. However, we've always gone out of our way to honor those from all peace loving nations around the world, and we state this fact in our ceremonies. We very much wish to extend our invitation to those from all the nations that have stood side by side with us.

I hope my last post addressed your concern/charge. We do not want to leave anyone out that could find solace in such an event. We also are fully aware that this method of appreciation is not everyone's cup of tea. People remember, grieve and/or appreciate in many different ways.

Hopefully, I've change your mind just a little of our event's purpose :)

Either way, peace.

Hey Bekki, just wanted to drop by and say it was really fun to collaborate with you on this event.

Just got back from Trick-or-treatin' with the kids. This quality family time I just spent with my family is only possible because of the sacrifices made by yourself, all the hard working men and women of the US armed forces, as well as all those from so many nations who stand by our side and/or fight for their own freedoms.

Thank you!!!!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from falling hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- LTC John McCrae, Canadian Medical Corps, 1918

We have kept faith, ye Flanders' dead,
Sleep well beneath those poppies red
That mark your place.
The torch your dying hands did throw,
We've held it high before the foe,
And answered bitter blow for blow,
In Flanders fields.

And where your heroes' blood was spilled,
The guns are now forever stilled
And silent grown.
There is no moaning of the slain,
There is no cry of tortured pain,
And blood will never flow again,
In Flanders fields

Forever holy in our sight
Shall be those crosses gleaming white,
That guard your sleep.
Rest you in peace, the task is done,
The fight you left us we have won,
And Peace on Earth has just begun,
In Flanders now.
- Edna Jaques, Canadian civilian, 1918
This poem, a reply to John McCrae's, was used at the unveiling of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington.

tho it is mainly an American holiday.

No it's not.

End of World War I related observances:
Armistice Day (New Zealand, France and Belgium)
Independence Day, commemorates the anniversary of Poland's assumption of independent statehood in 1918 (Poland)
Remembrance Day (United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations, including Australia and Canada)
Veterans Day, called Armistice Day until 1954, when the holiday was rededicated to be in honor all American military, naval, and Air Force, veterans. (United States)

No it's not.

Yes, Veteran's Day means a lot to a lot of people, and we will not only be thinking of Americans, but so many of our friends from all over the world, as we do each year we've opened up our guild event to the masses.

That's a very important message we'll really try to embolden this year.

Battery

Nouda, maybe we are wrong but the US remembers that day (9/11) every day, it's something we'll never forget. We also tie it to many military holidays and celebrations because many soldiers have served and many have sacrificed because of 9/11. Like I said maybe we're wrong or maybe it's just something others can't understand but it's how we do it. I can't see why, even if you disagree with it, that you think it's a terrible thing for us to do.

November 11 is a Remembrance Day for many countries, maybe it should be in every country. We should all just try to get along, at least on that day.

Well said Battery! As we find out each year, there are a few who will disagree with what we are doing, and why. They try to incite anger. You know what it also does to me? It solidifies just WHY we do such an event each year together with our friends, standing side by side.

We need to remember and appreciate more each year those who defend our freedom. Every nation should have a day, on any day of their choosing, to thank their warriors for sacrificing all for the betterment of their citizens.

We need to thank those who stood and laid before us, and we need to do it with more fervor than any detractor.

If all but you say... is THANK YOU.

Dakota Meyer grew up shooting game on a farm in Greensburg, Kentucky and can hit a squirrel at 750 yards. But it wasn't his marksmanship that earned him the Medal of Honor. It was his astonishing courage.

http://www.veteranstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Dakota_Meyer_2.jpg

"Did you think you were going to die?" an interviewer asked.
"I didn't think I was going to die. I knew I was," Meyer said.

"You knew you were," the interviewer says frankly.
"I knew I was going to die," Meyer repeated.

What happens before and after that moment makes Dakota Meyer a Medal of Honor recipient of 2011.

I'll be honoring all three Medal of Honor recipients this Friday.

"It was 10 years ago now and still I can’t help but hope my dad will walk through the door and give me a kiss telling me he still loves me. When I first found out that my dad wasn’t coming home, I felt like I was there with him. I couldn’t help but want to die. I couldn’t breathe. I collapsed on the floor and couldn’t stop crying for weeks. The pain I felt was like there was a hole in my heart. I lost my best friend that day. I had never been that close to anyone apart from my dad. I'm sorry for anybody who lost their family in that attack. It's not easy, and I hope we will always remember those who lost their lives on the 11th of September 2001.

Thank you for doing this, Miss." - Daughter of victim who passed on 9/11, Tower 2 WTC.

Whether in Peace or in war, it takes a special kind of courage to volunteer to put ones self in harms way for others. The members on the Militaries of the allied nations and those brave men and women who work as first responders do this every day.

Thank you for your Dedication to Duty and I thank you for your service.

Id like to review the simple process of copying in DDO and pasting links in your browser. Some have had trouble in tributes past, so I'd like to clear up all doubts.

1. Highlight the link by holding down the left button of your mouse and dragging across the link. Press CTRL C.

2. Open your browser and click where you normally type your web address. Press CTRL V.

3. The videos are processed in 1080p HD. Depending on your PC however, you may only be able to handle standard definition, while DDO is open. On the bottom right of the video, you have options to play in 320p up to 1080p. You can go full screen, but I only advice those will really good PCs and high speed internet speed to try that! :)

Look forward to meeting everyone tomorrow.

Remember, all servers welcome. The entire DDO community is invited, regardless of your country of origin.

"A man's country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle; and patriotism is loyalty to that principle." - George William Curtis

In other words, people of different countries can wish to be loyal to the same principle(s). Human dignity and freedom are two great examples of that.

Lets stand together, brother and sister. All one.

Yes, Veteran's Day means a lot to a lot of people, and we will not only be thinking of Americans, but so many of our friends from all over the world, as we do each year we've opened up our guild event to the masses.

That's a very important message we'll really try to embolden this year.

Yet every single post here by you (and the thread title especially) is American-centric.
It's no wonder you've had a few people posting frustrations with this thread. I'm honestly surprised there haven't been dozens others. I know a lot of non-Americans who if they played this game and read these forums, would have VERY strong words for you due to the thread title and subject contents.

I'm sorry, Leslie, but Americans are free to celebrate those who took part on 9/11 on a separate day - that of 9/11.
If you choose to remember those who died on that day tomorrow, then so be it. But keep in mind that Nov 11 is a day dedicated to celebrating those who fought, and died, for what we have today, in every major war that's ever been, be it WWI or II, the Korean War, the Crimean War, or the hundreds of other wars.
9/11 has nothing to do with it, and turning tomorrow's celebrations into a 9/11 commemoration is an insult to what tomorrow represents.

Not that I don't respect your intentions, or that I don't honour those who died on 9/11. Indeed, as a medic myself, I respect anyone who helped out the US on that fateful day, and anyone else who does similar deeds on a daily basis. However, let's not confuse that day with Veteran's/Remembrance/Armistice Day.

Tomorrow is not a day to celebrate medics. Or firefighters. Or police. Or doctors and nurses. Or anyone else who participated in 9/11. It's a day to celebrate the armed forces of all countries, particularly those who gave their lives in the line of duty. You above all, if I infere from your posts that you're in the US armed forces, should realize this.

Your heart is in the right place, but your head is up your arse I'm afraid.
Make tomorrow a day of support for ALL VETERANS, for ALL WARS and not just a "Veteran's" (i.e. USA) "9/11" (i.e. USA) post, and then you're onto something.

If we can't keep the politics and preaching over "real life™" out of DDO, can we at least move this ...stuff to Off Topic, where it belongs please?

No matter what anyone thinks about this thread, holding an event to mark today or even today itself, that is very good and should be watched by everyone.

And in regard to whether or not this thread is political: It isn't, was not started as been so and those who support it have not made any kind of political statement. Fortunately there have only been a few attempts to make it so, by those not supporting it and to everyone I shall say "Keep politics out of gaming forums", especially where no kind of statement was been made.

I wont salute, because I have never served and don't believe it is appropriate to do so, if you don't or haven't served, so will say thank you instead.

Of course it is political. It is celebrating the military forces, and in extension the actions of those armies, of a select number of countries ("peaceful nations" as per the OP). For a pacifist, or someone coming here to play DDO from a country the OP has judged to be not "peaceful", it is highly political or even controversial.

However, the mods at Turbine moderate their own forum, and if they think political content is all right in the General Forum of an International fantasy game then that's the way it is. The only thing you can do if you would want content like this to be moved to Off Topic (where all other subjects that do not pertain DDO are discussed) is to use the Report function and report the OP for posting in the wrong forum.

Peace out

One statement. We are in fact making no political statement. This is not about any politician, in fact the only one makes a cameo in my videos is not even mentioned by name. This is not about the left, the right, the center or any other ideological belief.

Our event is SOLELY about thanking Veterans (US Veterans and those from all nations seeking peace) and those who are in some way TIED to veterans, yes, the family and friends who also have had to suffer waiting for their loved ones to come home.

Thank you.

PS: We are grateful Turbine allows us the bandwidth to gather and stand side by side our heroes so we can say thank you, and for that, they should be commended.

PS: We will show the undeniable link between September 11, the US military, and in fact will have a US Veteran, US Marine Corp Staff Sargent tell an unforgettable story about that day of infamy.

Great turnout at 1500 hours!

Hope to see even more show up tonight at 2200 hours. Thats 10pm EST.

Will post a few pics of the 3pm ceremony.

There will be a video compiled from footage of both events and posted in a separate thread along with a transcript. That video will be sent overseas, to the battlefield and to friends throughout the world via Facebook, Youtube and through other circles.

Sorry I missed it, had to work and got home after the first one was over, didn't know there was a 10pm one til just now so I went out for some drinks and missed that one too. I'm sure it all went well, happy Veteran's Day to all. Thanks for the service to those who serve in their country's military for keeping us all safe.

Les, Bekki and everyone else - I was unable to make it tonight. I returned home early from work, but my 8 month old daughter decided to make my evening all about her (which I don't mind in the LEAST, cuz she is the most important thing in the world to me)... Please accept my most sincere apologies - my heart was with you all, as well as with your message. If you could, please PM or email the vids to me, as I am greatly interested in how everything went.

My great and heartfelt thanks to all veterans everywhere, whether American or not - it takes a special person to take up the sword in defense of freedom, and I thank you all. I believe I stated it at your Memorial Day rememberance, Les; it is because of you (veterans) that I am able to raise my daughter in peace. Thank you.

I am very sorry, everyone. I tried. I really, really tried to be on here to support everyone.

I'd like to thank Bekki for giving us the opportunity to co-lead our event with him. It was an honor to work with this particular US Marine. You hit the ball "out of the park." It was a great experience I wont soon forget, and I'm sure many others won't as well.

I have no words to describe the First Responders tribute...

I was deeply honored as I am every year to be a part of this.

Thanks Bekki. I thoroughly enjoyed making those videos. I was serious about you joining us again next year, too. In fact, if anyone else wants to make a presentation, let Bekki or I know. Next year's ceremony might be even better!
