Can't find a babe on Orien

Being bored, I started typing random words into the MyDDO character search box. The results included some surprises, considering how there have been complaints about DDO running out of available character names.

Here are some obvious (to me anyway) names that according to MyDDO have not been taken, and the server(s) they are available on:

Amity: OW
Archer: O
Babe: OW
Brutal: O
Brute: T
Criminal: CW
Crusher: O
Fatal: CO
Fists: OW
Fist: T
Hard: O
Heinous: CW
Lovely: O
Mace: ACW
Mac: O
Mean: CW
Nasty: KOW
Pain: C
Pure: O
Slay: C
Snake: O
Spike: CO
Wolf: K

There were quite a few obvious names not taken on Wayfinder, but I left them out. The conclusions I drew are that Orien really is empty, and that you shouldn't have trouble finding a name if you use your imagination a little. Hint: take two appropriate words and put them together, for example Purepain is only taken on 3 servers.

I know this because I checked my CP to look at a PM I got, and apparently since the forums came back up even if your rep is switched off, you now see your plus and minus awards anyway, without having to turn it back on.

And I was doing SO well ignoring the whole thing. I saw the red and had to come and check what happened.

I used to get real hung up when a name I had my heart set on was already taken, since, though I don't roleplay, I just can't bring myself to play a character whose name doesn't sound like a name.

I took a linguistics class awhile ago and have since been making names that sound like names and are two words stuck together. Well, Greek and Latin morphemes stuck together, anyway :). Very easy method to quickly come up with a name I like. A few examples:
Erythor = red prayer (battlecleric)
Leonelle = little lion (halfling fighter)
Benecan and Dyscan DeMule = good dog and bad dog (mules :p)

So, yeah, a bit of creativity and original names are doable.

In a similar vein, all my dwarven characters use Finnish word combinations, e.g. Kivi Kasi, and my Halflings use Maltese combinations, e.g. Siekta Mewt. If the direct translations don't work for you then "namify" them. Hence, my dwarven THF maul wielder came about his name as follows: pulp smasher which morphed to smash pulper -> sarkea massa -> sarkea massinnen (my deepest apologies to any Finnish speakers reading this for any offence caused by my mangling the language so badly, this is only a naming methodology).

Simply find a language which produces words that have the right feel for the race/class you are creating and have at it.

Google translate now has a rather nice thesaurus feature which was obviously included for just this application :-)

Yeah, well I just tried to come up with generic words that would most probably be taken quickly as first names. Maybe I got it wrong. Those aren't names I tried to use, just names I plugged into MyDDO. Whatever, just don't go Freud on me.

Part of my motivation was to point out you DON'T need to come up with a name like xXDrizzzztXx

Sometimes I wish there was nonconsensual pvp in this game. Usually when I see characters with the 'D word' in their names somewhere.

However, it is nice when I can actually pronounce the name of someone I'm in party/raid with, which doesn't happen if you go off grabbing names out of the Silmarillion or such other 'high fantasy' books. I don't speak Klingon, Elven, Dwarven, Gnomish, or any of those fictional languages, and would rather not ruin my headset by sputtering gibberish down it. (Any more than normal, anyway).

I'd call LOTR low fantasy. Conan is high fantasy. But that's just me.
