View Full Version : Orien Lag is Horrible

I play a static group on Orien once/week. That server is always worse than my home Argo. However the last few weeks have been horrible. Double-suck because this is a permadeath group.
Free players should not be allowed to log on when the servers are already lagged. It decreases the quality of the product that paying players use.

on the one hand, i see your point. on the other, if free accounts are gimped that hard then free players will likely not go premium or vip, and WB/turbine aren't gonna gimp their revenue stream like that.
besides, this lag started right after u11 went live. either we've had the biggest influx of new players ever (and fyi, paying ones don't make the servers work any faster than free ones, not in this short time-frame), OR... buggy new code is buggy. i'm thinking it's the second option

...because we all know an update will fix everything.

If VIP acounts are gimped by lag, they may also leave. VIPs are supposed to have priority access to the servers. There should be a lag threshold. When that threshold is hit, no free player should be able to log on the server. In fact, they should be booted, to make room for paying customers.

lag has been rediculous of late but i think the concensus is that it was mainly down to the cove event.
that's finished now but of course we have mabar to come, yay =/
that said, without knowing the cause of the lag is purely down to excessive amounts of people on line (though it was at it's worst (for me) on sunday evening euro time) it's a bit much to kick people, free or not.
in terms of server access i believe this is centered around idle time, as a prem i get about 15mins where as VIPs get an hour iirc. not sure about free players though.

its not just orien .... there is bad lag everywhere.
I have been running a TR in a small group (usuallly two or three of us with no hirelings ) amd everytime we are surrounded by more then three mobs and we try to heal ourselves or cast blade barrier the game freezes up and we die.
in shroud this is happening very frequently as well .. healers saying they are casting but nothing is going off then all of a sudden 3 heals in a row land when they are not casting.
We figure its about a 3 to 5 second delay which is deadly when the mobs DONT get the same lag. Its all been since this last update .... also hear rumors that artificers are being blamed for quests not completing (FYI did a master artificer yesterday with an artificer in the group and there was no problem ... i even got the handwraps i was looking for)
I hope its because of cove .... tell you the truth i am kinda sick of the cove ... last year it was a bunch of fun .. this year it was just a horrible waste of time grind. The items are still great .. but the time spent for the items is not ... with the raise in difficulty none of the items are worth the grind ... and to make matters worse .. everyone who was not in cove was getting twice as much lag.
they need to fix that event ....it was buggy last year with similar effects ... hopefully the lag is gone tonight.

Dude i dont know what game you play .. but free to play players pay more for this game then VIPs do generally speaking.
VIP 10$ per month + elite unlocks + 500 TP over all cost $110 per year
Premium 15$ every two months and get nothing. total cost per year $90 + store purchases at the VIP amount (500 points each month) 50$ = 140$ per year.
On average as a Premium player i spend between 15 and 50 dollars every update updates come out every 2 to 3 months .. so i actually pay as much if not MORE then a VIP and get less bonuses.
Why am i premium then? cause SWTOR comes out in December and I own this game so i dont have to pay for it when i am paying bioware for a good MMO.

i've not got the link but there's a statement from turbine with a basic breakdown of how going free-to-play effected their income.
long and short is that whilst they got a boost from premium players the most dramatic shift was in actually allowing VIPs to spend more than the monthly subscription.
just because VIPs can pay $10 a month doesn't mean that's all they're paying, it actually seems alot are paying that and more on top.
personally i've goen premium, as you have, for the same reason for owning the game (as much as one can) but i certainly don't see SWTOR as a threat to DDO (or any other game with, imo, lame point and click mechanics).
DDO's strength is in it's actionesque combat.

you think it's an influx of freeloaders - i think it's u11, because that's exactly when i started having lag issues. obviously we'll differ on what we think the solution ought to be. you want f2ps booted, i want them to fix whatever it is they broke. a combination of common sense, my limited experience, and this forum's collective experience suggests to me that neither will happen
i have to query why you think the problem is a sudden influx of f2ps? a bunch of people who've never played DDO somehow heard crystal cove was happening, and decided to download 4GB of game on the strength of that alone? i'd guess it's more likely that long-standing players (who are also more likely to be p2p), might have returned to play just for that reason.
by definition, most people who joined just to play an artificer (seems a little more probable) aren't f2p, because they had to pay for the class with real money - seems doubful to me that most new players who only joined to play arti would mess around farming up 995TP through favour. grind does not stack well with a "oooh, shiny, want it NOW" frame of mind
