End of the week with Major Malphunktion -What day is it?

Busy couple of weeks. When is it not? It always seems like the fall at Turbine goes by in a blur.I'm not even sure when it became October. We are wrapping up update 11 patch 1 soon (barring last minute bug failures of course) and moving headlong into Update 12. I personally can't wait to share - Update 12 is going to be my favorite release this year. Maybe the best new item in a game...EVER. No, it is not Mjolnir.

Patch has some love in it, a bunch of Pet and Hireling fixes, that melee physics fix, some UI fixes and almost too many to name other fixes.

So, not a big meaty post this week. Hope you all had some fun with the Kobolds in the cove, and Mabar is right around the corner.

An aside, and it's my post so I can do that...Rage came out this week. I may be showing my age, but I got into this business because of id software. Looking back at that first experience of having a true visceral emotion (fear) playing a game was powerful. Then, the creators let you create levels and stuff for the game? Amazing! It was just like building modules for DnD...but with space marines!
From Doom, through the Quakes to now, Carmack and company are like comfortable friends. They are no longer at the top of the heap, but that is ok. For a time Romero/Carmack were the Lennon/McCartney of the game industry. Doom for the time was inspired... the creation of a new genre(yes yes there were other FPS games i know), and a new way to play (deathmatch) formed a whole generation of designers. Like hippes in the 60's learning guitars to play Beatles songs, my generation was pasty DnD computer nerds making levels in WadED or in some other editor. Anyway, congrats to Carmack and company for another release...even if it is consolified. I'll enjoy it for the simplicity that id games are. In some ways that is what makes them beautiful.

so do any of these fixes include a fix for the new super crazy lag that has been showing up in the last few weeks... so far it seems to be limited to raid size groups for the most part with the exception of the end of weapons shipment that has become almost unplayable to me now with all the npc on screen at once.

I spent the 2nd half of the 90's playing those games over LAN in various garages. Doom 2, Quake and Warcraft 2. Back when getting a LAN to actually work was the highlight of an evening. I still think it was pretty funny that Romero got beaten by a girl at the game he invented though. I'd have racked up tens of thousands of hours online play in Quake 3 Arena from 1999 to 2007. Quake Live came out a few years back and somewhat revived the scene, though I never really got into it. Never tried Quake 4 cause I heard it was a bit of a flop.

I feel you, man. Back in 1990s I was like - I wanted to be a game programmer. I remember the time I bought my first Visual Studio C++ 6.0 cd. I was so excited I didn't know what to do. Ofc., I didn't know how to use it. Nobody taught me how to code in C++. I had no books and no friends with whom I'd share my passion. During high school, the same happened - no books, no support from teachers and friends - nobody cared. I hate them today because of it - no matter. Today I do java web programming and I'm satisfied - don't miss the old passion to become a game programmer.

Also, 1990s was THE GAME ERA! Man, I remember the time of Doom, Quake series (1 and 2), Unreal... Woohoo - that was some fun time. Also, when I got my first 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000, I was in nirvana. :) To bad, they don't make them today. That ERA surely did inspire a lot of people and will be remembered always.

As much as I would love to have a Wand of Bacon for my own character (or for real life), I do not think that it would be the best item in the game ever because of the clearly overpowered nature that would force Turbine to scale up raid difficulties to the point where anyone who did not have a Wand of Bacon equipped would be unable to complete, no matter how many Mnemonic pots they chugged.

As much as I would love that item, I must offer a regretful /notsigned.

I don't yet have an epic version yet. but I have bug reported the +25% fort as being permanent (until full log out) for about 3? updates and each successive patch/hotfix now.

I have stopped putting in reports because QA has assured us many times now that EVERY bug put in the system is on their list. Since it is a player advantage and I have bugged it.. 4-5 times, I think my free work is done.

Well, bestest item ever is clearly subject to the opinion of the poster.

My first thought was close to something mentioned a few posts back, but it was slightly different....BACON HANDWRAPS.

Then no, perhaps the Brocolli maniacs had gotten to the core code and created Brocolli themed weapons.

Then with Halloween coming up, perhaps something like a Propeller Beanie Hat?

But that probably won't happen (ie U12) before Halloween so that leaves Thanksgiving and Christmas/Holiday themes to combine with items.

Notice however that Maj did not mention any particular class, just that the item was bestest ever. hmmmm.


On another note, I do have to remind my high schooler that sports around Boston was not always like this. I remember Sunday mornings in the late 70's heading to the Pahk, grabbing a Globe in Kenmore Sq, going in to the bleachers and spreading out and reading the Paper for a few hours during BP. Often we got in those days before the concessions were even open (unheard of these days) and we brought in food!! and no one got a pat down body search just to watch Baseball... and then.... Bird Happened and almost no one cared about the other sports...

Yeah, as soon as the Sox were out of it, I started rooting for the Rays. They've just worked damned hard to get there, and I can get behind that... even if they kept the Sox from embarrassing themselves in the ALCS... I mean, out of the playoffs.

Thanks for the nostalgia regarding Doom, Wolf 3D and the like. Many hours were spent face-grinding the walls searching for secret doors there. I still remember my excitement when Quake 2 came out with it's nice graphics and great atmosphere.

Since +3 tomes came out in the store, I actually haven't played and got to watch all of the playoff games... even the rain delays.

A real ballpark didn't have lights either.

Of course, you could have been a Montreal Expos fan and went to a community ballpark that was made for 3000 (another 25K were tacked on within 1/2 a year and lasted for almost 10 years... there was no protection from the weather in those bleachers!) Players could see the actual sunset and play was actually stopped so they wouldn't be blinded.

Fortunately MRS + Practiced Spellcaster would be a simple permanent fix (much faster then implementing all the other feats - and much more balanced to what melee multi's have).

Yankees fans may not be the nicest people in the world but when you have as many WORLD SERIES WINS as we do a succesful season for us isnt one where Boston doesnt make it. Why? Cause its almost a given. We dont have to hope Boston loses, they do that on their own.

^^ THIS...for the LOVE OF GOD THIS!! I am so sick of having a decent AC on several different toons, only to get repeatedly smacked around by anything other than lower level trash mobs. I don't WANT to have to look up some twink-build multiclass Barb/Monk/Ranger to be able to get my AC into the 70+ range so i'm not being beat on constantly, while the mage sits at the back and casts 2000+ point ice spells at mobs at will.

And for best item in the game ever. It's a new ring that doubles Cleric/FVS total spellpoints so they can actually do their job AND maybe some offensive spellcasting when they want to so they don't just feel like walking bandaids which is what DDO has reduced them to. Honestly guys this has been a problem for YEARS. MOST people HATE playing a Cleric because they can do pretty much nothing but be totally geared twords healing AND they need mem pots like crazy. It's extremely annoying getting pretty much ANY group together, then having to wait for a pug cleric who you have no idea if they are even halfway decent at their class, or are one of those bizarre "Battle Clerics" you hear about. Either that or your spending your time trying to beg any of several guild members to play their cleric which noone wants to play because this game is so unfriendly to the healing classes.

This is however only my personal little rant as Turbine figured out early on that tweaking it so the healing classes have to spend loads of cash in the Turbine store buying mem pots would generate them uber cash. I would be willing to wager that at least 75% of the income from the store is from healing classes being forced into buying mem pots as their class is so broken and limited that this is the only way to play the class and not suffer a massive ragefest in raids when you run out of spellpoints. The only alternative is to generate plat from about 3 other lvl 20 toons to feed the cleric so he can have a chance at buying overpriced major mem pots from the AH as the drop rate of these things in the game is insanely low.

So yea you want to fix something? Fix Clerics so people don't hate playing them, the class is already extremely limited as it is, making it insanely hard for them to get/keep spellpoints just makes a difficult class even more difficult to the point of ridiculousness.
