View Full Version : Real benefits of Spell Resistance?

So how useful really is Spell Resistance?

My drow is at level 20 and has been for a while. I mostly do Raids and Epic content and I also like running some slightly lower level content (15+). I generally am soloing when not running the Raids/Epics and I definitely do feel that my Drow's inherit spell resistance is blocking a lot of things.

I often see the little blue SR bubble pop on myself and along with my evasion skills it seems that I can run into/through an awful lot and not have to worry about taking massive damage or being mind-controlled, etc. Although I haven't taken the time to break down exactly what is being blocked at what levels. I just have the general feeling that I'm better protected than on my toons without it.

So, I would like to ask for some detailed feedback on how beneficial SR actually is. Turbine certainly feels that it is a huge selling point on the Drow (as they advertise it as such) - and I am tending to agree.

I know that Drow (once revered) are now considered more lame - and many might think that their innate SR is no reason to play one. I would like to be convinced of this by facts and numbers. Having someone buff you with SR or wearing an item (short of epic) isn't an option because of the desire to solo and the need to not want to slot an item solely for the use of SR.

Again though, please don't make this a "drow are good or bad" thing - I want to focus on SR itself and how useful it is compared to NOT having it.

thanks.

The SR is somewhat useful for soloing, especially on classes that have limited access to buffs.

But most people build for grouping, and in groups SR is less useful. It comes in a cheap and easy mass buff, and even beyond that, most things that have SR checks have buffs available that make you entirely immune to them.

Also, as you get higher level, the caster level of your enemies increases far beyond your level.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling - but you're just skirting the core questions (apart from repeating what I've already said), or at least not providing any detail.

- In groups SR is less useful - yes, already acknowledged this. But even in a group you won't necessarily be given the SR buff. OR, it may get dispelled 2 mins after given. If you prefer to think of it this way "How useful is having SR (whether through buff or innate)?"

- You statement about things with SR check have buffs that make you immune to them - this is interesting. I would like to know what some of the most common enemy spells are that make SR worthwhile and which buffs directly negate them.

- Caster level increases far beyond your level. Well apart from epics where almost any toon not a min/max has an ac/hp/save/sr which will all be eaten through by an epic mob... At what point does SR start to wane? A Drow gets 10+character level. So is 15 SR useful in level 5 quests? Is 20 useful in lvl 10 quests? Is 30 useful in level 18-20 quests? Also how does hard/elite difficulties factor in?

thanks

Mob caster level is too high to make SR effective past level 8-10. With my level 20 Cleric casting Spell Resistance (32 SR, which is higher than Drow reach), it barely ever triggers when doing Vale normals, yet alone anything harder.

At low levels, it's great. Non-drow can use the Phiarlan Mirror Cloak or Infested Armor to get worthwhile SR until around level 8-10. At high levels, don't bother.

Thanks for the more specifics. Without going and running some quests, I feel that I have a different experience though. I solo run the Vale quests a lot and seem to feel that I see my little SR bubble pop often. Again, this is from memory and maybe I need to go run various level to see this in effect unless some people start posting some actual caster numbers of enemies.

Also, would be interested in some specific mobs in high level quests (15+) that would be good to test SR against. Or even, as requested in OP - what specific caster spells does SR ward most against.

thanks

EDIT - I'm also wondering to what effect dungeon scaling has on this, and if I am seeing SR work more often because I am soloing? I don't know how dungeon scaling is implemented - and don't think it makes a level 16 quest more forgiving when run by a lvl 20. If anyone has insights on how Dungeon Scaling affect this too would be nice to know.
