View Full Version : So... what am I doing for Mabar?

As someone without any monks, Pale Masters, or empty cloak slots, nor a plan to acquire any of the above, what should I be doing during Mabar? I'm guessing that lfms will be just as scarce then as they are now, and unless Turbine is adding more items (please do - even just non-wrap versions of the WoEN) I really don't know what I'll be doing on DDO for the next month or so except peruse the LFM list and see if anythint is up.
Especially since everything is BTC, making things "just in case I need them later" doesn't really make sense. Maybe I'll use my left over scales from last year to make a docent for Wyl for when I eventually hit my wizard lives.
Few quick suggestions for new items - Holy Avenger (longsword or greatsword), Docent/Robe of the Flame, Splintmail of Khyber (heavy armor), Shooting Star (Longbow), Shaft of Light (Opposite of Petitioner's staff - maybe evoc?).
Anyway, just felt that maybe Mabar should have something for everyone. As it is, it has less loot variety than Cove, which lets you twink - means untwinkable niche items aren't going to interest a few people. I might be in the minority, but felt like speaking up anyway.
Thoughts?

Mabar has stuff that everyone might find useful
Deathward potions.
+Damage potions.
+Light damage amplifiers.
Finger of death grenades.
Cool hats you can put on people.
Interesting summon gems. Not good, but weird like Risia's Snowman.
Nightshield clicky (the robe), 8 mins of protection vs magic missiles @ lvl 8.
Can't remember the others. But you should definitely quest while the event is active. Hound and Ghosts of Perdition are a must-see IMO - not spoiling ya.

Hell just having a night shield clicky for my melees will keep me farming!
Plus the cloaks aren't too bad either.

I know about the Beholders :P
I see myself maybe farming a stack of light amplifiers for Jial. Other than that, I mostly play a sorc and a paladin - dw and nightshield, while nice, aren't really all that cool for me.

I still have 42 of these from last year's event. And from a sabotage ToD run.

I thought we can't make modules with named wraps?

^This. I so regretted not making more of them last time around! Also Restoration potions.

Nitpick: FoD grenade comes from Cove. Mabar offers Phantasmal Killer grenade, which I think is pretty worthless. Actually, both are worthless -- DC is very low.

"Delirium" is even better. It really lives up to its name this time of year!

"Sabotage ToD run"? What's that?

I said it before, but I'll say it again. The Mabar had three major things wrong with it: lack of diversity, BTC items and the need for Epic tokens for Epic items. The Cove got this right the first time, although I'm disappointed with the lack of additional items and the almost (yet I'll assume future) change to items to BTC.
As you said, the items for Mabar are aimed at Monks with the handwraps and everything else is aimed at casters. The cloak was the only item that was great for everyone... However, if you are grouping today, there's a huge chance that someone in the group will get mad at you (with a possiblity of banning you) if you wear one because the "Mabar cloak causes lag". So even the most universal item from Mabar has lost alot of appeal lately.

The event and/or items may be tweaked of course. Been a lot of change in game since last it was on.

Worked decently enough for my TR during his WW farmage ;).

Why does the cloak cause lag?

Why does the cloak cause lag?
The graphical effect reduces lower end computer's FPS by 5-10 when it goes off. It's incredibly noticeable in eDQ, Sins, VoD, or anywhere else where you take large numbers of hits in a short amount of time. It doesn't hurt top end PC's, but it does hurt lower and mid end PC's.
The invisibility guard also can sometimes do weird stuff to mob aggro and actions, which can appear to be a bit of extra lag.

I agree with you. I looked at the list this morning and said ... meh.
I hope they add new items to spice it up a little.

Why does the cloak cause lag?
It doesn't, but some low-end computers can't handle the bat effect. Of course, those same computers have difficulty with firewall, blade barrier, etc.
On topic, I'm looking forward to mabar to upgrade all my characters' cloaks, and to get one for the artificer.

"Sabotage ToD run"? What's that?
Most/all of my characters can either cast or UMD their own buffs/cures. I don't like needing to rely on others during grouping. Means I only play Paladins and casters, but... meh.
Another thing - I would loathe grinding Mabar primarily for consumables, since I have a slight tendency to hoard them in case I need them more later.
Acute Delirium should be fun... I wonder if the giant beholder will be altered?
"Sabotage ToD" was a run I was in in which 2 people (me and Diyon) were tasked with screwing the run up, in any way possible. No one knew it was us at the start, but after phase 2 it got pretty obvious. The leader, who had organised everything, passed me a bunch of Pumpkin grenades just for fun.*
*Note that some of the best ways to sabotage a ToD run are Kormor's belts and healers, grabbing Shadow agro, and spamming "Share Quest" from the quest panel. You didn't hear that from me.
Edit: Oh, and Greater Dispel + grease on the stairs up to phase 2. Note that this was before the change that would bring your soulstone back up top.

I'm still reasonably hopeful that Mabar will have some new items. This wasn't the "official" time of year for the Cove, so I wasn't expecting anything new, but since this is the official time for Mabar I think there's a good chance that we'll see some new stuff.
[edit] I'm also hoping, maybe even more so, that they made mechanical changes such that there's not a shortage of stuff to kill in the graveyard and that the dragon instance is a regular 12-person raid with reduced lag.

what should I be doing during Mabar?
Farming and giving me all your Mabar stuff.
Why does the cloak cause lag?
It doesn't really. A computer that can't handle the bat animation will totally shut down from a disco ball or two, so it's not even really an issue. I've worn that cloak since last Mabar and never once been kicked or refused from a group because of it. Never even had anyone mention it, actually.
