View Full Version : How do people get skills so high?
In doing research, I realized that you can only raise a skill to Rank 23 (character level +3). Yet people claim to have 50+ in specific skills, I don't understand how they are doing it.
It seems like the max you can get is 23 + 15 (+15 enhancement item) + 6 (the six being using a t3 greensteel item with exceptional stat skills on it) or 44? Yet people talk about having 50+, how do they do it?

Different types of modifiers(eg: Competence and Insight) , boosting the stat the skill runs off of, and other ways I know I missed.

You are missing some other boosts.
Stats can give you another chunk, good luck item (+2), maybe even enhancements. Greater Heroism is +4.
my rogues move silent/hide as an example, get really high
23 ranks + 8 dex bonus + 15 item + 6 greensteel + 2 good luck + 6 from assassin prestigue + 4 greater heroism
there's 64 and I can use the past life clicky for another 20 for 20 seconds if I wanted to take a screenshot of it and really make you wonder where I could possilbly get 84 from.
edit: man, you have to post fast around here, or else you just look like you are repeating what everyone else said.

this works for any skill, it's not just 23 ranks + 15 item, you have to ocnsider raid buffing and gear when calcing these things

Not to mention enhancements.
(human fighter can get something like +7 or +8 to intimidate from enhancements if they so choose, assuming they have sentinel dragonmark)

On my fighter Snakpak I can get to a fairly high number. Of course It was built to do it and wasn't by accident.
23 skills
15 item
2 Good luck (slotted blue)
5 Epic gloves of the claw(enhancement bonus stacks with + 15 item)
2 Past life student of the sword
2 Coin lord favor
3 Feat: Skill Focus Intim
6 Stalwart Defender
2 Least dragonmark of the sentinel
1 Denieth Intim (unlocked by dragonmark iirc)
6 GS bracers (3x pos-this gives a +6 exceptional bonus to cha skills)
3 +6 cha item
2 (+3 cha tome and litany)
1 ship buff (cha)
4 GH (clicky self or spell for longer need)
4 Improved intimidate enhancement line
----
81 self buffed
You can get more like +1 from yugo pot (cha) or 90-120 second alchemical buffs from house d turn ins (for pots) or also you can hit skill boost for +5 (20 sec) if you went human. The bard song gives you +2 to skill also( I think), I really don't remember.
I'm probably missing some stuff you could also use (or in leiu of other things) but this is how I got it.

Considering this is my first and only toon so far, I don't think I'll bother with trying to get intimidate so high. Barbs usually aren't the best tanks anyway, they're better suited for DPS.
So if I won't be buffing intimidate, it'll either be spot or haggle. Which is more useful for a barb?

Quite the opposite, barbs make really good tanks. You don't need intim because you'll be generating threat by damage. That being the case, you'll obviously want to focus on pumping out as much damage a possible. As far as which skill to dump your remaining points into, I really couldn't say. I am not well versed in barbs ( I dont have one). By default I would say put it into balance, but they have such high STR I don't really seem them getting knocked down too often.

skill focus intimidate +3
splash 2 monk for evasion and badger animal path for another +1
bullheaded feat for another +2

I max balance anyway, but the question is what the rest of my points go into. Depending on the cost of +3 tomes, I may end up with a lot of unallocated skill points. If +3 tomes are relatively affordable (i.e. less than 2k TP), I plan to buy a +3 con tome so that I can reroll with a 32 point build and get 20 base con after the tome. That would leave me with three extra points, which I would put in Int to give me 10 after a +1 tome and a lot of extra skill points. If I can't afford a tome I'll have to stick with base int and use those three points to boost Con from 17 to 18 (and use a +2 tome).

To intimidate some of the hardest to intimidate bosses (epic lailat and elite hound) you need about 80 intimidate.
Lots of modifiers to get there ...

It would easily be doable if it weren't for that level+3 cap. :(

iirc Demon queen epic was 79 for a non fail
I think the hound on elite is 81-82 (read somewhere, had no need to run it)
Epic LoB I believe is 77-79 ( I wasn't wearing all of my intim gear and paying more attention to his specials than looking at the rolls :))
As far as the extra skill points ( to the OP) I would put them where you would feel you'd get the most benefit. It just boils down to preference once you get the basics covered.

Well, I was thinking of Haggle then. With my haggle pirate hat, epic buccaneer ring, and the 12 or 13 ranks of Haggle I'd get through leveling, Id be around 30 haggle which is pretty darn nice for a barb. I'm not seeing the benefit of spot.
