View Full Version : Funnest Class for me?

I've played cleric, rogue, sorc, fighter, pally, & barb (most not over level 5 though) and I can't decide which to stick with. I keep switching back between sorc, fighter, and rogue. I like rogue but I can't do enough damage to make fighting enemies very fun (high str rogue build maybe?) and sorc seems to the best so far damage wise (am a WF so the repair spell is nice) Fighter does as much damage I wish my rogue did but can't disarm traps and all that fun stuff. Can someone help me determine which to play?

Sounds like you want a Wiz/Rogue.
Two levels of Rogue, the rest in Wizard.
The Wizard's emphasis on intelligence makes their trap skills a force to be reckoned with, and with insightful reflexes, they can have a really high reflex to completely avoid enemy AoE spells.

Rogues do a TON of damage.
And of COURSE make a high strength build, why wouldn't you?
But all have their merits. Rogues are bad DPS if you're soloing comparatively. Fighters are always capable of doing solid DPS. Casters are nice, especially WF.
We can't really decide what is more fun for you. I have a Cleric, FvS, Sorc, Wizard, Fighter and Monk. (Others that aren't capped yet). So far my Cleric is my favorite. But it'll be different for everyone. I can't see playing as a Wizard or Sorc ever being boring though.

Rogues get better later on, due to large increases to sneak attack damage, and still being able to take down traps.
Sorcerers only get more powerful. Once you get the hang of spell point conversion, you become an absolute terror.
Fighters are fun, straight forward DPS. Their damage is consistent (unlike a sorcerer's, which comes more in bursts), and non-situational (rogue dps is better if the rogue can get some sneak attacks in, but otherwise it falls well behind that of a fighter).
Note: this is more info for average specced characters, not well geared characters. These are the things you will notice until ~level 15. I cannot say on anything beyond that, since I use PUGs. And in higher level PUGs, it is hard to gauge class dps, since gear levels vary hugely.

If only sorcs could mix with rogues, I don't like the slow casting the wizards have. The new artificer class is sort of a mix between wiz and rogue isn't it?

Yes, it is, but it has less SP than the Bard.

Quicken fixes that slow spell casting. And no, artifacer isn't like a Wizard Rogue. Completely different focuses, although they get spells and trap skills.
Also, keep in mind if deciding between rogues and fighters, rogues are pretty easy to eventually make self healing through UMD and heal scrolls, fighters it's a huge pain to get high UMD.

While levelling up sorcerers will decimate everything with proper sp management. They still can at endgame but it requires more gearing to pull off. Your damage is limited by your blue bar so once you run out of sp your DPS drops considerably.
Rogue will do the next best damage but they rely on sneak attacks which is more difficult to maintain and targets with fortification will reduce how often you can score sneak attacks. Undead and constructs for example have 100% fort and are immune to sneak attack damage. Strength based is definitely the way to go imo and will really help against 100% fort targets, although your DPS is still going to be poor compared to a fighter for example. Rogues really start to shine in endgame content imo, everything dies so quickly before that.
Fighters deal pure damage and aren't affected as much as a rogue when fighting 100% fort targets or grabbing aggro and will deal more damage than a rogue in these situations but a rogue will have higher peak dps.

Err... sort of. We'll have to wait for them to come out and see how they play on the live servers but I see them mainly as buffers They have some damage spells but their sp will be limited, especially with so much going into buffs. They can use cross bows too but I don't see their damage output from them being very good and without evasion it will be very difficult to get some traps, probably impossible.

Would giving a rogue max/high strength help out with dishing out non sneak attack damage? What kills the rogue for me is that they don't do all that well when they aren't using sneak attacks.

IMMENSELY.
@Bobthesponge
You might want to consider learning how to read English before criticizing others for "not" using it :D Just a friendly suggestion.

I myself prefer Monks, I love my TR'd Monk, he's a beast.
I also am very fond of my Pale Master. Been having a lot of fun with him. Just hit level 19 earlier tonight.

It seems you'd like str-based rogue best. But, if you also like sorc, you can have 2 characters - one caster, one melee. Why not?
Yes, it is, but it has less SP than the Bard.
Artificer has more sp than Bard. Less than wizard, though (I think that's what you wanted to say).

Artificer has more sp than Bard. Less than wizard, though (I think that's what you wanted to say). That's what I have at the moment. I prefer to have one main character and spend my playing time on that, I don't like switching between them, but I can't make up my mind on which I like beddur.
Made a WF rogue a bit ago, almost level 3.
str 17
dex 15
con 14
int 11
wis 6
cha 6
Probably not the best build but I liek the high strength so far. Hits just about as good as my fighter but I seem to miss a lot more, maybe it are the weps.

You're probably better off with two characters - once you get to epics, most of gear is BTA. So, you can play mostly with one character and gear other at the same time. But, if you want focus on one, more power to you, I guess.
