Hiyas.
I just upgraded my CPU to an AMD Phenom II X4 965. (Black Edition)
According to my motherboard specs, it is compatible.
I have a GIGABYTE S-Series GA-MA770-DS3.
I think I have made a mistake. I went to this site http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2722 and it looked like it was okay BUT I was looking at the top of the page where it said SOCKET AM2+ and didnt see the small text lower down saying SOCKET AM3... but my motherboard is AM2+ and the CPU seems to be AM3.. so i've stuffed up.
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2722#ov More details on my motherboard.
My PC is running but like a dog. Neither the BIOS or Windows XP know what the CPU is besides being an AMD.

Windows also doesnt know what it is, but CPU-Z knows exactly what it is.
So, have i screwed myself and have to buy another motherboard or is this in some way salvageable?

I really hope you can help..
Thanks in advance.

Yep, looks like according to the chart it's not supported. :(

Motherboard shopping time, i'm afraid. Till then, swap the old cpu back in.

If it is all unfixable could someone please recommend one for me from this site http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=138_1207_803
I got all my other stuff from there and they seem to have the best prices.
I would like CROSSFIRE capability but price is also a concern.
there is so much that i no longer know about all this stuff. it's driving me nuts.

also, if i put the old CPU back in, i will have to try to match up the compound between the CPU and the heat sink. (both old CPU and old heatsink & fan are in a box now).
I can match it, but it wont be as good as fresh compound will it?

I would try this before buying something else. BIOS updates are free, and you should do one before you change CPU's anyway.

Based on the gigabyte supported cpus and download options there is no bios update that would update the MB for the AM3 processor.

Don't risk the processor and the hardware warranty and go purchase a AM3 MB.

You must use new thermal compound. should be able to get a lil tube for under 5$.

check out this topic. has some interesting stuff about your mobo. if you have revision 2.0 you can use am3 chips.

Although not related to your quandary. After all of the forumites lending their input as to what set-up works great.

Thought you might enjoy this little video...you want fast...this definitely would qualify!
