Wow, that's pretty amazing.
My folks are in town right now, and they live 20 min from D.C. I know Rockville pretty well - had a girlfriend who lived there, and that is where the quake was centered.
Was the shaking enough to cause any internal damage to homes? I know from the news (looked right after reading this) that there was no major damage reported - but I'm wondering if my folks can look forward to a mess when they get home tomorrow.

I just got home after putting my groceries away and felt it.
I notice that it's in the "breaking news" on several US news sites now.
I'm in the Philadelphia area.

I'm about 30 minutes north of D.C. minding my business, mooching free Starbucks wifi while my is passed out in his car seat, killing time before his appointment....
I really thought someone was shaking my car at first. I thought this **** only happened in Cali!

Well from the USGS
Magnitude 5.8 - VIRGINIA
2011 August 23 17:51:03 UTC
which is weird...because normall quakes do not happen often there.
Also on a side note.. lower Colorado/New mexico region also had one yesterday...in an area not usual for them as well...
Magnitude 5.3 - COLORADO
2011 August 23 05:46:19 UTC
The earths crust is changing & magnetic poles are moving at faster rate than normal... 43miles a year now. So... the earth is going through a growing sput & more will happen. We have averaged more 7.1 + earthquakes in the last few years than this century has seen & i expect that to increase.

Felt it here in my office in Burlington, Vermont. It wasn't crazy strong, but strongest I have felt in many years.

Felt it in Pittsburgh, but very minor. Slight uneasy feeling, and my monitor was shaking. Still, strongest I remember feeling.
I'm actually in a building that's undergoing some construction, so thought it was from that at first.

On my other message board people as far as Manassas were saying things were falling off shelves there.

We're okay. Many of us felt it at the office or at our homes, but it was minor. Hopefully nothing more goes on *runs to find some wood to knock on*
And yes, I'm sure to the players who live near active regions we sound like a bunch of babies ;) now I know how the Bostonians felt when the tornadoes came through a couple months ago ha. Quote from someone at work "We don't have a bathtub! We don't have a bathtub!!!1!!1!"

Felt - and heard, it made the building bang - in Hampton Roads, VA
My first-ever earthquake. Freaky.

I only recognized it as an earthquake since I still remember the three seismic wave types from Geology class, 15 years ago.
No damage in this area that I know of, was fairly minor compared to what the West Coasters experience, but it's definitely unusual for the East Coast. Last one that could be felt in the Philly area was nearly 20 years ago, and it was only 4.5 or so.

I've only felt one other Earthquake and that was like 30 yrs ago in San Berdo, CA...
Very strange in deed.

Not to mention that horrible wild fire october, and landslides, and, no wait, the rest of it was pretty nice.

wow, a 5.8 near DC? That must've been scary. I personally probably wouldn't even get out of bed for a 6.0 here in Los Angeles, but that's me, I guess I'm spoiled by Los Angeles earthquakes.

Yup, I'm sitting here at work West of DC. That quake was enjoyable. Too many people are overreacting.

The news story I read said some folks were afraid it was another plane strike... Pretty sure there's a few minor differences ibetween a mid-range quake and a jet liner landing on ya.
Anyhow. /jealous.
One of these days, if I can't have a tornado, I'll settle for the New Madrid fault here in Mizzery to kick off a good jiggler..

I live in Gaithersburg MD about 15 minutes from DC and I felt it here my whole building shook and we are on the second floor. The funny thing is I didn't even really think about just kept playing! I am from San Diego so I guess I am so used to earth quakes that it did not bother me. But my neighbors all came running out of there apartments screaming it was sorta hilarious to see them freaking out :)
I can now officially say my bed was a rockin'. :p Live in MD, was my first ever quake. Was a freaky experience, had to turn the fan off I was afraid it was gonna come flying down. No damage here. Hope everyone is okay out there.

I was in an EChrono on Sarlona when it hit. We were waiting for people to get alts for the final chest, when a guy from Virginia goes "My fishtank is vibrating all over the place...we are having an earthquake. Let's open these chests before I lose power!".
Lol. Loot before evacuation ftw!

Earthquake in Colorado where there are no earthquakes. Earthquake in DC where even the government never moves.
You know what that means don't you?????
Yep, absolutely nothing.... :D

Love, Whittier Narrows and Northridge ;)
I'm just teasing. I can imagine how outright scary it can be, especially when you're not as well adjusted as those of us in earthquake prone areas. Glad to hear that it looks like everybody and everything is safe, and congrats if it's your first quake! :)

Haha, felt it even in the middle of Queens, NY.
Monitor, door, etc. was gently swinging back and forth by a small margin, could even feel it in my body as well.
This is the first Earthquake experience I consciously experienced. Kind of neat, in a way.
I was selling items in the Market at that very moment. A few minutes after I could see everyone making remarks about it happening to them well. One guy said he even felt it in the Canadian side of the Niagara.

Had the strongest earthquake in most of 40 years down Trinidad way in Colorado the night before this happened. No injuries, fortunately, but a lot of building damage.
Nice thing about earthquakes in this region, they don't travel well due to their depth and nature of the geologic formations they pass through.
My best wishes to everyone affected by the recent Eastern earthquake. :)

Tell me about it. It was only a 5.8. It didnt do much damage in a region with lower earthquake regulations than the west coast. Heck, the only damage the media has even found to photograph is cans falling off store shelves! :D

I agree, people get used to it if it occur often.
Had similar size of earthquake 3-4 days ago when I visited my parents home.
Our reaction was like "Oh god, yet another one..." no panic, no evacuation.
Though, getting "too" used to earthquake is another problem.
People won't try to reach safe ground, that a one of reason why we had grim casualty in tsunami back in March :(
But that's another topic, hope everything is okay at there.

I've been in three major quakes (all over 6+) so I can sympathize with people who have never experienced one. The worst was the '89 Loma Prieta quake; you know, the one that caused a partial collapse of the Bay Bridge, dropped a freeway section on hundreds of cars and stopped the World Series for a few days. I was working in a liquor store at the time and bottles started flying off of the shelves and showering me with glass. Luckily, there was a sturdy door jamb nearby and I rode it out. Funny thing was, we were the only building in our part of town that still had power afterward and after about an hour and a half of cleaning up all the glass and booze we opened up again and had the best day of business in the store's history. People were pretty shaken up and we had lines out the door!

I was in the shroud.
At first I though it was construction across the street but when I took of my headphones I heard no construction.
Then I thought the demon that was possessing my bed had returned but the room wasn't abnormally cold and the walls weren't bleeding.
Then someone said over voice chat that they were in DE and having an earthquake and I was like "Ah ha".

How did you enjoy the latest aftershock (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc0005jg1.php) that occured at 1:08AM? Looks to be about the same position and depth too. Just a 4.5 instead of a 5.8.

AFAIK, most Server Farms are kept underground or in concrete buildings.

I'm not worried about the servers as much as I'm worried about people like Jerry. XD Who knows what that crazy guy plans on doing? I can see him standing outside Turbine dressed as Gandolf yelling "You Shall Not Pass!". Someone better lock him away with the server. XD

The problem with keeping it underground is that if a leak springs, or if the floodwaters pour in, guess what? Those servers are gonna drown and electrocute themselves. I don't care if it happens to Khyber, but...even if it hit a insignificent server like Wayfinder, I would be quite disappointed. And believe me, if they had water pipes flooding parts of the pentagon, its possible it could happen to Turbine.
