This looks new to me, but in the grotto on a new artificer I had this message when doing the trap.
(Combat): You make a Disable Device skill check. You roll a 16 (+8): critical success!
What is it, exactly, over a normal success?

If the box controls a mage fire canon, you don't disable it,, you dominate it.. Permanently I believe. Blue hat and all.

well, in P&P... a "Critical" success meant you could bypass the trap without disabling it. but i would assume it means better chance of getting trap parts or getting more trap parts in DDO.

So it does nothing in the entire rest of the game, and will only serve to confuse newbies?
