View Full Version : Hint for testing your DC's

If you are a rogue (or rogue splash) and you want to make sure you can hit your DC's - just test them once in a while....Go into an appropriate quest with an early trap and maybe a lock or two - check yourself against it.

Ie. I did this in Von5 - just to make sure my newly flagged Ra10/Ro1 could hit the trap and lock DC's.

Started with North. Since I hadn't done the traps before ever I also got to learn the right order - I found that I needed a few more points to get never fail/don't blow the boxes level of trap DC's. Then I went and fixed those and retested - no problems. Went east to check lock DC's - had to kill some stuff first but it was doable and got to the garbage incinerator door - picked on first try with a middling roll.

I suggest any rogue/rogue splash do this kind of testing (especially before a Von run to make sure you aren't gonna embarass yourself (I am thinking of a pure rogue I ran with once who couldn't hit the locks...and is now on my friends list). Do it every couple of levels on different quests. Say Haywire at L8, Maze of Madness - L13-15 or Fleshmakers (you can run to the first trap without fighiting anything if you want).

Heck you can probably do this for Von5 while the raid is forming (I can't think of a problem with this but let me know if this is wrong). While it is forming just enter - go North see how you do on the traps - if you have no problem great let the party leader know or just be smugly self satisfied. There are no fights before these traps so it's an easy test. If the party fills while you are doing this even better since one more step will be out of the way. If not and it looks like it will be more than 5min before it does then leave and let it reset - not that there is a timer on this raid.

Great suggestion! I hope all new or unsure rogues do this.

Also, they can click the "d" in H.o.r.d.o. in my sig below for a refresher course on rogue skills.

Unless the dump Int entirely i would expect most pure rogues to have no problems (subject to gear and tools) but I have been surprised before.

Splashes I expect to have more problems due to the likely lack of skill points (Wizzies being the exception).

And for the record I think the DDs were around 25ish.

So I had:

Item +10
Picks +5 (from higher toon)
Skill points 13
Heroism +2
Ship +2
Skill boost +2

=34

Using only a +7 item and no heroism or ship buff when I tried first time...so when I failed on a 1 it blew.

Anyone know what the difference between blowing on a 1 and just failing is?

A 1 on a disable roll is not an instant fail. You only blow the box if you roll more than 5 lower than the DC. So, when you blew it on a 1 the DC was at least 5 points higher. If you roll a 1 and it doesn't blow then DC is 4 points or less higher and you can keep trying until you get it.

Using your example:
13 - skill points
7 - Item
7 - picks (+5 picks give +7 DD/OL, +3 picks would be +5, I assume you meant +5 picks)
2 - hero pot
2 - ship buffs
2 - skill boost
---
33 - modified DD skill

First attempt you rolled a 1 and blew the box so 33+1 = 34 so the box DC was 39 or higher

If you had rolled a 2, 33+2 = 35, and failed then blew it on a 1 you would know the box DC is 39.

By changing your gear from +7 to +10 you increase your DC by 3 to 36.

Try again, roll a 1, 36+1 = 37, you fail but the DC is 39 so you can keep trying until you roll a 3 or higher (or run out of picks).

this is a very good idea. when i recently reset my enhancements on my rogue so i could do epic traps, i got a group a guildies together for a tide turns run. tide turns has usual trap DCs, and they can be avoided, so its a good place to test. i made sure there was a monk in the party to help my DCs if needed. i was able to get them with nothing but my standard trap gear and a GH clicky, and was pleased. i need to see if i can do epic spies, but other than that im perfectly sure im capable of getting epic traps.

i agree with the op, rogues should be sure to test out their trapping capabilties
