Is this a normal occurrence for all DDO players? I know I've seen a lot of people have their client crash. I mean I just don't know if it's my computer or if it's DDO's fault. No other game has ever once crashed on this computer. My computer isn't great but it's not THAT bad. It's just been getting worse. Now I'm up to the point where my client crashes AT LEAST 5 times a week. I just tried to play and I logged in, joined a group and then crashed ten seconds later. I restarted my computer, logged in, joined the same group and then ten seconds later I crashed again. I don't know what the problem is or how to fix it.

There are several workarounds. Reinstall the client. Shut off firewall. Defrag. Update all drivers mostly video. Run in windowed mode. Delete cookies. Run a clean sweep type program to get ride of REG errors. Remove all spyware etc. Soundcard selection was causing the same problems for me. I adjusted and fixed the CTD. Run in DX9.

I recommend you post in the Technical Assistance forum, you should be able to get a fair bit of help there. If you haven't changed anything obvious and things have been getting progressively worse, I'll bet the top 4 suggestions are going to be: possible hardware overheat, driver update, disk defragmenting, and loweing your graphics/engine settings (at least to see if that helps.) A lot depends on exactly what kind of "crash" you are encountering. They will find a detailed explanation of what you mean by "crash" helpful, and quite possibly suggest you post your system specs and DXDIAG report.

Every game has different technical requirements and we use them all differently, so sometimes the appearance that "it only happens with DDO" may or may not be indicative of something specific to DDO.

(I run DDO on an old PC with minimum graphics and I haven't crashed in years...)

Not sure if it's a coincidence, but my client seems to crash after every other update.....

The game at the moment freezes then crashes once everyday, but before update 10 it was fine....

Before the update 9 it used to freeze then crash, before update 8 it was fine ....

etc, etc, etc,

How recent is recent and how frequently? I never DC. Never. Sometimes some lag in places like eADQ2 for sure, but never to the point of DC, until yesterday. I was running The Pit on one of my alts around 2 or 3 PM EST yesterday and I froze 4 times in there getting the yellow then red icon indicating latency and disconnect from the servers. All but one of those resumed normally and the client didn't shut down, but obviously as my wording suggests, one did. Of a group of 5 people it happened to 2 others at the same time while the other 2 carried on the first time, the second time it seemed to happen to all and the third time just 2 of us. I can't remember the 4th but t here was a time when I was the only unfrozen one running around killing mobs and I looked over and saw a party member in mid-float coming down from above just hanging there not moving at all.

So I guess my point is, if it's frequent and localized to you then maybe it's your PC and graphics setup. However it could be a more global issue and have to do with the client side as seemed to be the case yesterday which I have found to be quite rare, but an issue of course for all if it continues or happens at other times while I'm not on.

Thanks for the replies, I just posted in Technical Assistance and hopefully I can get an in depth solution. I'll try updating and defragging.

It is becoming more common for me lately. I have a very low end PC but I get crashes 4-6 times a week..:(:(

I remember I had the basic colors problem on crashes long ago on my old pc, each time I had to reboot to get back to normal colors, the only way I found to fix it was getting rid of the Catalyst. I still had problems, frequent crashes and upgrading to a new video card fixed that problem. I also added extra ram which also helped. That's something like 5 years ago, and I don't use that pc anymore. I still have crashes on zoning like a lot of other people, but that's all.

MY client NEVER crashed... untill the update with DX10 or something... now it crashes at the most weird moments... not when entering a new explorer area (sand and orchard are most famous i believe), but just when running in a quest or standing still or.... well it just crashes.

how do i run it in DX9?

Hit ESC->Options->Graphics

You can switch to DX9 here. Switching from DX10 to DX9 solved my own crashing problems (including zoning crashes).

Yesterday a ton of people dced so its not just your computer. Around the time mentioned earlier i had 2 people then 3 people in my group dc. in my guild 3 then 4. one our group members had 3 people in their guild dc. so i think there was a crash somewhere. so turbine. could you please check your servers for us?

It's not just you OP. The game has grown increasingly unstable over time. There is a well known memory leak issue in game that causes the zoning crashes. There also seem to be some issues with graphics that only show up in DDO based upon video card and such. It seems more likely that your particular annoyance has to do with the later. These problems are most often fixed by changing to an older version of DX.

could be something entirely unrelated, but when my client was crashing repeatedly it was due to heat issues. You might want to check that out (everest tools provides a nice display for different components' heat sensors).

Yesterday the net had a node that went down, so it re routed itself. Right around the same time everyone dropped.

I've been having network issues so I've been watching my pingtraces in as close to real time. I saw my route change right before my eyes. With that done, everyone has to kill the game, the servers have to close connections, and then get swamped with everyone trying to get back in at the same time.

My Game crashes only on Load Screens (GH and Sands seem to be worse for some reason), I've reviewed the dumps and analyzed the call it made right before the crashes (Windows 7, DX10), and I traced it back to a DX 10 call, but moving to 9 didn't help. I don't think it's entirely DDO's fault (do they even support windows 7?). I updated my DX10 package and my video drivers for my ATI (can't remember the chipset right now) and that seemed to have a marked improvement, but I still brace myself for a 10% chance of crashing at a load screen, and I always hope my shroud group is still there by the time a start it up again. I have no other issue with any games or apps on my machine, only DDO. Very strange, maybe if I new DX APIs better I could lend more insight, but at this point, I can live with a 10% chance of "splash crash".
