View Full Version : any way to keep wilderness map from resetting?

couple of questions about wilderness maps
- what causes them to reset to a blacked out screen? it gets very frustrating to have spent a lot of time exploring a large wilderness area only to come back to it a few days later and get a black, unexplored, map screen. any one know what causes this? is it on a timer? resets if you change servers?
- obvious next question - is there some trick to keep it from happening or some flag in your profile you can change to prevent this from happening?
have run several of the wilderness areas enough that I know where things are but some areas I have little experience with and rely on the map points to get to quest doors, etc.
thanks for any help on this

Unfortunately, your client only keeps the last few dungeons/wilderness area maps as you explored them. The way not to have it reset is to never leave it, or at least not do much else outside of it.
The few maps it remembers is not enough. The system should probably be changed, perhaps with some map-making excuse from the DDO store or perhaps as a favor reward or such allowing you to increase the number of maps kept memorised, or just show the whole map to anyone who has completed all the explorer points in their current zone.

the fog of war clears all but your last 5 maps to be more akin to how a normal persons memory is.

As others have said, only the last few private instance maps that you have visited remain cleared. Someone said 5. I thought it was 3. If you want a map to retain what you have explored, you need to make sure to revisit it.

Nope. The only way to prevent it is to consistently revisit that map so that it remains within your last 3 (or 5?) visited private instance maps.

I agree that it's very frustrating. There have been suggestions in the past to stop this from happening, or to lift the fog of war from all the wilderness maps in which you've visited each explorer point, or some other mechanic. There hasn't been any feedback from Turbine on this one way or another, so it's unclear whether they plan to do anything about it or not.

Yes, I feel the frustration from this, too. Sadly, there is no solution at this time as it is part of the game mechanics WAI.
Maybe that'll change in the future. (hope, hope, hope!)

As other's have said, it is limited to last few instances.

Yes, well... all of my characters farmed house K quests for the +5 Garmin GPS/Nav System and had better **** well NOT have the fog of war reappear.
Some people get way too caught up into drawing parallels between reality and this game.

I'm not sure if it's 3 or five. I've lost maps after going into 3 others, and I've kept them after 3 as well. Particularly the Orchard seems a little forgiving and stays saved for a bit longer.
Explorer zone resetting is one of my top gripes about this game, I like to explore everything thoroughly and see everything and losing the map and forgetting where you've been really stinks.
I'd rather it save all explorer zones and not save any dungeon maps.

oh I do use that, especially when the maps keep resetting. but that only helps so much, it's way easier to be able to run to the door or chalice or whatever marker is on the explored map than heading off into the dark, even with the wiki map opened up on the other screen

IIRC, its a 3 map limit before you start losing them. But.... its 3 explorer maps, and 3 quest maps. They are independent of each other.

Really?
So you can explore 3 explorer zones ........run off do a bunch of quests, and still have the explorer maps?
Are you sure? (Cause if so, that's FREAKING AWESOME!! lol)

I have begged the devs several times, just to reveal the wilderness map and do away with fog of war if you have completed the relevant explorer quest for that area. Seems like a nice benefit to doing it...it could still have the faint grey tint for areas you have not visited in that particular instance yet (like it does when you repeatedly reset and revisit and area without going to 3 or 5 new areas causing the map to fall off the end of the "recently visited and held in memory list"...)
I guess the issue has never made its way up the priority list...

This was once high on our list, but our list is huge and I think it shuffled down off our radar. I'll raise the issue again. Drives me nuts too (in wildernesses).

Then a "normal persons" memory must suck, cause I can remember more than three (and it is three wilderness and three dungeon, not five) of the wilderness maps in my head. And I don't think I'm like super-memory-guy or anything.

How about removing the fog of war completely like it was for all the years before this unneeded change. Then there beno need for the game to remember the last 3-5 maps.
Or you can add a Toggle for the players who want the fog of war.

sorry, and I know it's silly, but first time I have ever had a dev respond to one of my posts :)
thanks for all the replies everyone. but now a follow up question - is that 3 explorer maps per character? per server? per account? I am pretty sure it's not character because I usually stay within the normal level range for the area so would seldom be in more than 3 wilderness areas with a single character
but I do like playing different characters on multiple servers and they would be at different levels and in different areas. so guessing it's at least per server and maybe even account.

I have characters across several servers, and my explorer maps reset after about a week or so, even if I parked them in say GH for that week, I come back and the map is shrouded again.

Excellent.
Personally I'd rather you keep something like the current system for wildernesses that you haven't completed the Explorer quest for, but once you do find all Explorer points, you then have a permanent map to the whole area.
But remembering every explorer zone plus the last three quests visited would work too.

On similar lines, please also consider releasing the heap memory used by client_highres.dat for characters/maps - it shouldn't be necessary for DDO to retain all the data after a third different character or third wilderness area.

Fingers crossed!

looks like this opened up a lot more discussion than I ever imagined it would. glad to see it getting some attention, would be so nice if some enhancement could be made in this area.
I like the idea people made about flagging your character for an area if you have hit all explore points. doesn't it already work something like that for the navigator on your guild ship? in which case, it might be possible to leverage that code over to characters.
would be a nice incentive for folks to do a bit more exploring. or it could be that I like it because I happen to like exploring the different areas and would already have several unlocked :)

The mechanic is on live. They can use the same switch they use for the level 1 navigator (only transport after completing explorers).

It used to be three, but from what I can tell it only currently retains the last wilderness map now. If you go to a different wilderness area your wilderness map gets cleared.
Luckily the map(s) in my head only get cleared if I over partake.
