Ok so i'll start this game today and i'm familiar with D&D "played everything D&D related".
But i'm new to this game.
So i will not be able to play my favorite class the Monk because i will not be able to buy it this month it will have to wait but i want to familiarize myself with the game.

I was thinking about making a 28 points pure battle cleric or even a cleric/rogue "to open chests and disable traps
"
Will this be viable in the game for now tell next month when i'm able to buy the a monk class and a half orc race for my barbarian?

If no then can someone be kind enough to me and point me to a good build?

Also what a good server to start on...i want a server with alot of people so it won't be solo gameplay all along.

Since you proably will be spending most of that time in lower level classes i think the multi class that makes the most sense would be 19clr/1barb

since you will proably top off around,.. lv.5-8ish in that time this is my reasoning for that build:

1lvl of Barb for:
Sprint boost
a To-Hit boost
Profency with weaps

and cleric levels obviously for:
Self Heals

Take the barb level first and then just keep taking cleric.

This is the build I used for my 'favor farms' so i Know it is effective for doing stuff solo or with groups quickly and easily.

Take the starter Greatsword at the beginning so you can bash stuff, and make sure your enhancments you get sprint boost, its fun!

Dont really bother with raging since you cant heal while you are raged, but its useable at some points where you wont need self healing.

As for this bit, im enjoying my time on argonnessen, i have not noticed a lack of pugs, or guilds leveling alts, if you want a "static" group

argo has an interesting harbor sometimes, though. but it has improved recently. and there are always low level pugs around.

i think there's a good build around featuring cleric19/ftr1, as a human
that will be good for healing/raid healing, and a melee ability depending on your focus/efforts/gear

human for bonus feat, wisdom, healing amp
ftr for another feat

cleric is quite feat-tight, empower heal/quicken/toughness, maybe extend etc
if you want to add melee ability, u might need to consider PA/ THF feat/ TWF feats

THF is better if u can't invest in dex (as in most cases with clerics), and THF feats is not a must for THF
TWF is generally better at higher levels with good weapons, but they will cost you 3-4 feats to be effective

your key ability are STR/CON
get some CHA for divine might/radiant servant
get WIS as high as possible to open mass heal/ get more sp

as a 28 pt build, you won't have enough DC to make your resisting spells work though, so forget about the offensive spells
you may consider getting spell pen feats for quick debuff e.g. enervation/energy drain, but that might be costly


you will be able to heal/raid heal
melee with slightly less effectiveness than the more melee-centric builds
survive well
though you will lose cleric capstone (god-mode for 5 min), offensive caster, traps, sprint boost

well in fact i don't really see many trapsmithing clerics around
maybe rogues using heal scrolls?

Id still sugest barb for sprint boost, that... is... addictive. :D

um for that purpose, i had a cleric x/ ftr 1 dwarf yielding the ember GA, arcane sp set
I have put him aside for some time, but he's good at killing at low lvl as i rmb
well but barb may still do the trick, just becareful with your rage

On another note What do you think about a monk?
I loved them in NWN 1 and 2.
can't i do like NWN and hire a thief to open chests for me?
I mean it's really annoying to find a beautiful looking chest in front of you and you can't open it.

Monks.... are highly bugged at endgame atm, Wraps are broken... and need to be fixed now. other than that, they are a fun to play class at lower levels and definatly a welcome bonus to any class. I would go light monk if you are interested in using amazing party buffs, or dark monk if you are interested in doing more damage though touch of death.

To the chest point: Rogues are under used in DDO, traps dont hit enough and almost nothing is locked. lol. So i wouldnt worry about it.

Rogue hirelings at this moment I think can still only be bought from the store with real $$$. I might be wrong though, but I dont think the last update brought them to the Hireling vendors.
However u can try and look for groups that have rogues in them.

The handwraps bug that caused the enhancement bonus on wraps to be ineffective and change your to-hit when unequipping them? They fixed that. They work like they did before the bug, now, for about the past month.

But yes, if you're going to buy a race/class from the DDO store, Monk would be the first one. Many caster classes (like Wizard or Cleric) splash 2 levels of Monk to get the evasion feat. In-and-of-itself, the Monk class is very versatile, and there's a build that would suit anyone's taste, although I wouldn't call them a beginner class; they can be a bit complicated to build. But, if you know of D&D and played NWN, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

I assume somebody told you how to go on each server and grind for 100 favor? With that, you can easily buy the monk class, and have some left over to start on your first adventure pack (probably gianthold or vale of twilight).

Welcome to DDO! Have you been by the DDO Wiki (http://ddowiki.com/) ? That and the Character Planner (http://www.rjcyberware.com/DDO/) are perhaps the premier tools for building your character.

Note that most forum builds are focused on endgame raids and epic quests, and might not be accessible in terms of gear/tomes/account options. I would highly recommend Tihocan's Revised Paths (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=232660) which take the concepts used for the pregenerated builds offered at character creation and optimises them for accessibility/viability.

Perhaps the biggest distinctions in DDO from D&D/other D&D games:

Spellpoints - rather than spells per day, spellcasting classes have mana pools.
Enhancements - these can be reset every 3 days for a nominal fee
Real-time rather than turn-based - you can dodge many spells/attacks/traps with quick enough keyboard reflexes.

Also, there is a tendency towards min/maxing, although Constitution is highly revered and not a 'dump stat'.
Toughness is *extremely* valuable in DDO, by offering additional Enhancements for more HP. Almost every character takes Toughness in DDO.

If you want to be able to get traps, you will slightly gimp your cleric but you will still be able to do 95% of the same things a pure cleric could do... unless your group simply demands you have the capstone. The question is then, would you rather build your character for yourself or for the occasional demanding group? Your choice there.

Adding melee would require strength and/or dexterity, and making you dependent on four or five abilities for a 28 point build is not a very bright idea. The concept here is simple, divine spellcasting with rogue traps/evasion. The ability point spread is consolidated by taking Insightful Reflexes, allowing Int to do double duty as the source of skill points and reflex save (gain of about 4 reflex, as well as consolidation of gear, for the feat). Human is practically demanded by this build for the extra feat, skill points, and versatility enhancement.

As you can see, just going 18 Cleric / 2 Rogue already stretches you thin for feats, AP, and ability points. I'd suggest making your clogue a caster who does traps and playing a separate battle cleric (cleric/fighter) if you like, unless and until you have the resources to overcome at least the ability point spread problem.

QFT - I started with a build based on one of Tihocan's and never regretted it (and I'm still playing him on his first life in Epics with no problems.)

This is the ticket to victory. I would highly suggest following one of his builds over the ones mentioned in this thread. His Warpriest build (19 Cleric / 1 Fighter) is a very accomplished and flexible creation, and you can adapt it easily to your individual playstyle.

Tried on elite though didn't work that will as i ran out of SP

yeah just go pure cleric. it should be pretty easy to find a f2p party with a rogue to get traps. you can dps with a cleric if you use divine power. i've been able to out kill all 5 members in a tear of dhakaan run(such noobs :3) with a base of 12 str. took a regular +2 shock longsword, switch sovereign host LS proficiency on, and started swinging, tanking, and racking up silly kills.
maybe go necro wizzy rogue if you really want to get traps and heal yourself.

if you play straight for one month, you should get veterans(1k favor) and skip to level four for your monk.
