View Full Version : Option to hide TR Wings

I'd be surprised if this hadn't been suggested before, but I think it would be nice if TRs could elect to turn off their wings. I'd be happy with either a static decision during the TR character creation screen, or alternatively dynamically whenever they felt like it throughout the game.

At times, other players assume certain things about TR characters that may not be true. Being a TR can create the expectation of being uber by virtue of having wings. It'd be nice to be able to dodge that short of a character inspection.

Similarly, expectations of 'advice giving / game mechanic explanations' or 'build explanations' can be frustrating if you're not in the mood.

On a macro level, I think the vet / newbie divide would also be lessened by the presence of fewer wings around names running about the harbor and marketplace.

I appreciate an inspection of the character will still show Hero / Legend. No biggie, and that's fine; the visual disappearance of wings would still cut down on the above problems. Making it optional removes the downside for those players that do love the wings.

I would genuinely use this option 100% of the time, and for others that wouldn't, no harm no foul.

Don't see why not. Might make some people happier and doesn't harm anyone.

Wings, the only time I can see it along with my name is when I 2 box.

I also don't see why not, but I doubt the devs will even consider this. My (not-so-popular) also offer a different style of looks and I doubt they'll ever be input.

I don't see why not make it an option, along with maybe a height setting when creating your character, being able to increase or decrease it when creating characters, a certain amount per TR.

Maybe it could be ticked on/off in UI panel.
Or as consol comand /showtrwing off

Edit: These are kind of changes we could see, I'm personally sick of all the crafting business

Edit2: Sorry for the weird double post

This is a cosmetic no-brainer.

Just put the info in the Z-inspection panel above character bio somewhere.

Wouldn't they know anyways once they inspected your character?

yeah, but most players don't inspect people, nor do they know about hero, or champion or such. BUT they knowthat the wings are TR'd peeps. And TR sometimes mean jerks worrying about XP, than the quest itself. Or know it all jerks on General chat. Not saying that is true, but it only takes a few to make a bad rep for all.

100% agree.

In fact, it's those wings keeping me from TRing. I refuse to wear a scarlet letter-like symbol declaring me "socially challenged and convinced I'm twice as good as I actually am".

For the above good reasons.
Yes, TRs are, in general, held to a higher standard (until otherwise shown).
Some are not comfortable with that for different reasons.

For me, the main reason I would want the option to turn off wings is that for one of my builds I want to hit lvl 20 fast and TR immediately. This build will have minimal craft/farm (no greensteel, etc.) and only basic equipment available. I would not like to advertise that this is a TR build.

Contrast that with one that is properly preped for the TR with equipment set aside to be near optimal at most level (especially green steel at level 11/12). In this case, having the wings shown makes sense.

Of course, if I'm leading a quest, having wings could come in handy for a few reasons.

In any case, the inspect window would identify that it is a TR, but then you can include mention additional info.

At times, other players assume certain things about TR characters that may not be true. Being a TR can create the expectation of being uber by virtue of having wings.

At times, other players assume certain thing about Rogues (doing traps, open chests, making dps etc...). Please install a toggle button, so players dont see which class I have, so I dont have to meet their expectations.

/signed, because I dont care at all, but still want to see you happy. Non-issue to me.

Briefly, it's not a concern about how people perceive me; it's the material impact of that perception in the sense of questions / assumptions made in-game as outlined in the original post.

For the record, I have 2 TRs. One's capable and geared, the other is grossly undergeared. Though I would remove the wings on both, I'd particularly like to do so for the poorly geared one.

@ Uska: I understand that the status quo is that if you do not want wings you should not TR. I think that calculus can be improved upon.

So, if I get you right, you want to turn wings on, when you think your characters meets the expectations people put in a character with wings (beeing uber, experienced, etc...). And turn it off if not. Or generally turn it off.

Having wings just means, you get a toon to lvl20, buy a heart from store or grind 20 token, and reincarnate. Nothing more.

I dont play my TR like that of course it takes me forever to reach 20 each time but I am still having fun but that could be why I only have one tr and she is only on her 3rd life soon very soon to be 4th just need 75k and 4 more shrouds.

"I don“t care what other people think about me"... Well, usually people care a lot about how other people perceive them.
I think it is absolutely normal to be worried about how other people preceive you.

I don't see why I should have to advertise my TR if I ever choose to do so. When it was rolled out Turbine explained it (the wings, height ect) as a perk/privledge. I see no reason to force people to accept it.

I'd like to see the wings gradually become a darker, bloody red with every death.

As to toggling them off, eh, why not.

useless feature.

make the wings change color according to the amount of serious heal/repair potions the TR carries. e.g. green for 80+, yellow 40, pink none..

But remember that not all TR's are jerks and many of them are undergeared.......just the same as first life toons.

SLightly out of contex, since I wasn't aiming my comment at Uska, even though I disagree with him.

I guess because I answer alot of questions in General Chat in the harbor and Korthos, the wings tend to say "I'm better than thou, n00bs!" Not was the original intent, but when those with wings are in parties, especially PuG parties, they tend to get all upset if people die, XP per minute, etc. Thus making the expirance for the party pretty bad.

THey seem to be a bit not patient on the advice, either. Please realise I am not saying all TRs are like that, but there is enough that most new players try to avoid them. I TR'd for the first time yesterday and I got the snub in Korthos once they saw my name. So yeah, it happens.

For that problem the switch dont help. TRs can join "no-TR" groups more easily with the switch.

Sorry I overreacted to what I felt was a dismissive and a bit arrogant post.

Wings definitely affect the way others perceive you and treat you. More so than wearing an armor skin, and that can be hidden. If you are a power gamer the wings are an accolade, but for a more casual player probably the opposite.

I held off TRing for quite a while to avoid the embarassing pixie-wings and smurf-glow. I'd like to get rid of them both.

They mean nothing anyway. So you stuck with it long enough to get to 20 and TRed. Doesn't mean you learned much or got good gear. I have many toons, some TRed (with irritating smurf glow). All are played with the same skill or lack of it, wings/glow are no indicator. Some of my twink toons have better gear then some TRs, again TR indicates nothing. Seems pretty pointless.

Maybe you should get pixie-wings and smurf-glow on all your toons as soon as any one of them TRs, or even just got to 20. At least then it might be saying something vaguely meaningful about the player
And whilt I'm ranting, what about the size increase? Can't say I've ever noticed it but I've heard TRs Re a bit bigger. Seems an insult to halflings. TR halflings should be even smaller. Small is plus point :)

/rant off (for now)
