It would be pretty amazing if you could.

How many normal people are going to have the graphics card that can handle that lol.

Gah, want!
Imagine Von6 with graphics like that...

If they upgrade the graphics to those extreme, I'll get the $$ to buy myself two new Radeon 6950's. :D

The thing that's important to understand that is that using that kind of advanced graphics technology isn't just a matter of throwing DX11 at it. There is a ridiculous amount of art and level design that goes into making a game like Crysis look the way it does. All those models, all that rubble, all those particles, all need to be crafted by the game assets team. If DDO were to massively upgrade its engine, it wouldn't just be a one-time cost. There would be an ongoing increased cost to create new content that's up to an appropriate standard.

Look at EQ.
They put a new engine in a few years ago, but all the characters and older zones still look the same.

Exactly. New engines without new assets are going to look more or less the same. They'll probably run faster, though.

well they did say they were doing a new engine.... maybe it is cry-3 engine or Unreal 4 engine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3XeCHywNYM). You never know. Nice Demo of the update though for Crysis2

World of Warcraft is the same. They had a 'next-gen' overhaul, and all it does is add a few effects over the top of the existing cuboid characters and environments. Naturally, many of the fans still hailed it as being the most awesome thing they had ever seen in their lives, but im guessing none of those players had actually seen a more modern game since being sucked into their virtual life.

My cpu could probably handle it, I would need to do some serious gpu upgrading though.

Yes you can. No, you won't be able to move in the "new" DDO. But that's OK, because piking is fun too, especially if you get to look at a really well designed wall.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? And besides, I bet the overhaul did a lot more for the game than you think it did. There's also the fast that such an overhaul creates the opportunity to implement more detailed graphics, as well as retain the old. Allowing the newer faster gpu's to work their magic, while not casting out the old.

I have the hardware, but I doubt that a free-to-play MMO Game will get such nice grafics. MMO grafics are more the "lowest common denominator" type like WOW. Perhaps we will get such nice pictures, when Radeon 7xxx are cheap onboard grafic chips. But then we will still look at games like crysis and think: "When will DDO look like that?"

played through the whole game with every setting maxed(using the dx11 and ultra textures) just fine on my lowly outdated gtx 460. With most the game crapped all over with by console compromises idk why anyone would have expected otherwise game didn't even ship with graphics options other then being able to change the screen resolution and at least for me the suit controls via the middle mouse button worked terribly compared to crysis and warhead not sure how they could have screwed that up...

A GeForce GTX 460 costs about $160 and should be able to handle the game at maximum settings. Some people might think your average hardcore gamer is nuts for buying brand new hardware every year or two. But I think you're forgetting that a lot of them will buy a new card and then put their old card on eBay for about 2/3rd of what they paid for it. Doing so gets back a good portion of the money they invested in it.
If DDO were to massively upgrade its engine, it wouldn't just be a one-time cost. There would be an ongoing increased cost to create new content that's up to an appropriate standard.
I think you overestimate how much Turbine would have to redo things. Most of the content making up the dungeons is reused over and over in other dungeons. Archways, doors, levers, etc. All reused many times.
It isn't as if DDO hasn't had minor facelifts and improvements over time. House P looks quite a bit different. Also some of the older areas are downright bland compared to the newer ones.

Please don't assume that just because DDO is F2P that it should be thrown into the same category as all the other F2P MMOs. To date I've yet to see a F2P MMO that has had graphics as high quality as DDO.
Also the "lowest common denominator" isn't really true. You're citing World of Warcraft as an example and that's frankly a very bad example. Remember, Blizzard has a very overkill design process. They announced WoW in 2001, but it didn't get an official release till 2004. Thus WoW was likely being developed even pre-2000. If you've ever done graphics development with DirectX, you'll know immediately that WoW's early graphics directly resembled DirectX 7.0. Which makes sense, because DirectX 8.0 was released near the end of 2000. At a time when WoW had likely already been in development.
There's another reason WoW is a bad example though. The fanbase is pretty loyal. So loyal in fact, that I've known several people who overkill their PC's processor and graphics just for that one game. Thus saying "lowest common denominator" simply doesn't apply to them anymore than it applies to any other MMO that started off as a subscription-based MMO.

Replacing a laptop is a lot more expensive and not worth the time required.

I think a few of you are missing the point. The new update to Crysis 2 requires expensive hardware to run at max settings.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crysis-2-directx-11-performance,2983.html
A GTX 460 would barely be able to handle it (like 20 fps). You need at least 2 in crossfire if ya want to see higher fps on max settings. Even then you'll only get up to 40-50.

The graphics in Crysis 2 looks awesome.
But, in fact, I have never asked better graphics from games than Half-Life 2 was able to offer. Games should concentrate more on the interesting game mechanics and vivid athmosphere.
Look at EQ.

Yeah, that was the second new engine they dumped into that game, and players can tell exactly what eras those overhauls occurred in, because the old content looks the same as it did in 1999 even after the second drop.

I have to admit this Video is somewhat impressive but its still not Real Life, so what? DDO does not have the same Graphical Quality and yes, at least some upgrade would be really cool but i dont think its an "Must have"-Thing for new Players. Im running DDO on 1920x1080 with DX11, max. Textures etc. and it looks pretty fine. Just run around Marketplace or House P. LOTS of Details to see there. In the right Spots i get even down to ~40 FPS (compared to the 90~100 i usually have). So i think DDO is pretty nice as it is.

Strange that a video made to highlight the great graphics would be 720p instead of 1080p+
But I don't need that video anyway.
I have the game.
I have 2 x GTX480. :)

What's the point ?
We can already do the following in DDO : ( with DX9 and a single graphic card )

3840*1024 ( Dual 1920*1024 Screens ) Epic Velah.

And I am satisfied with it that way. :P
