Saw your post, and not sure you understood. (Or maybe I misunderstood, it has happened once or twice)
-If you craft from your ingredients bag (ie do not put the items in inventory) and fail, you lose as many ingredients as you would have on a successful combination.
-If you move your ingredients to inventory and craft from there, you lose the normal randomish number of ingredients on a fail.
It seems like when it takes the ingredients from your bag, it doesn't know how to put them back if it doesn't use as many as it thought it would need, so destroys them all.
