View Full Version : Am I the only one who finds pets annoying

I cant be the only one that gets tired of not being able to see because someones elemental is in the way. Really cant be the only one who finds the earth elemental too loud.
I know they are helpful and can take aggro but to me just not worth the headache.
Not a bad as someone who charms a dog and then cant release it when it needs to be killed.

No, you're not the only one. I personally found my Earth Elemental annoying even though I was the one summoning it. It was just too useful to do without, especially when soloing.
I can't tell you how glad I am to have gotten to level 15 where I can use the Air Elemental instead, that is much smaller and much less noisy, and as a bonus even more efficient at incapacitating mobs.
In fact, it's so efficient at it that it seems rather overpowered to me, it can even keep some orange-names knocked down for the whole fight.
I'm hoping it's less useful at higher levels, because right now it seems to make soloing rather trivial for me.

nope. love them. i first rolled a palemaster just so i could have 2 summons. took augment summoning. learned it works with hirlings. then learned i had crazy self healing and dcs. then i did a lot more solo work. my summons want me to tell u they are better than you. my summons complain on the forums asking me to myddo people so they dont die in quest.
The Eathies are too loud since their sound was updated a few months ago, it would be nice if that was fixed. But pets can be pretty handy

I despise pets. The ones I hate the most are the low level Iron "I must spam grease" defenders.
Pets are annoying, can cause confusion and draw aggro when you don't want it.

earth elementals are the worst because they are wayyyyyyyy too loud, hezrou make quests unplayable because you can't see anything but their big asses blocking the screen. most others are ok. so devs, quieter, smaller pets ftw.

I have a love hate relationship with pets. They are cool except for when they get in the way. But I think they are awesome for their function. Now if we only had a class which increased the number of pets you could have... >.>

Depends on the quest, the group, and the pet.
In my guild's (generally shortmanned) elite DQ's, we summon a bunch of teleporting pets. They gain the initial aggro, and keep her occupied while the casters blast her. Greatly reduces the healing cost (and we use the "spartan" method on every difficulty). We, of course, don't use pets on epic since you want fully controlled aggro there.
In normal, and even sometimes hard Amrath, a couple Air Ele's make for great CC.
At the Gianthold levels, Greensteel Earth Elemental clickies are incredibly powerful. They're loud and big, but they do provide a good bit of assistance to a melee. There were complaints about their noise back in update 7 or so, when the loud "clomp clomp" was added, but nothing came of it.
In most epics, we avoid all pets except for the Mindflayer from the Shard of Xoriat trinket. They just gain too much aggro and cause more trouble than their worth in most cases. The Mindflayer does a fairly good job, even against epic mobs, at eating brains.
Pets are avoided in anything where you don't want any sort of randomness, or where you need to take mobs or environmental fixtures (Titan/VoN6) down at certain times.
I also agree with the other posters that you need to avoid any pets that can be encountered as monsters in there. Please no more confusion with Orthons or Barbazu in Amrath quests, or Shard of Xoriat summons in any of the new chain.

Oh, you are SO right on both these counts. First count, my hearing is... questionable. Call it age or far too many YES concerts back in the day, but I have to have the gain up on my headphones. Our Wizzie or Sorc summons an Earth Ellie and that crunching, crackling uber annoying noise drowns out everything else. True, very useful - though I prefer the Bearded Devil myself <G> - but by the time a quest is over I think I've cracked a few teeth from gritting them.
Second count, my sister runs Halfling Monks. I personally don't mind a crowd of pets - I run WF or Half-Orcs so I can see over everything <G> - but get a bunch of big pets with a Halfling and... hee! Okay, listening to my sister holler a variation of "Someone get that big butt OUT of my way!" while trying to loot a chest is pure gold. Of course, I do pay for it later when I snicker, but worth it.
Good times, good times...

I still haven't found out how a dancing mindflayer or taken looks like. Are they immune by any chance?

Once, i missclicked and accidentally summoned a hyena in Titan. Well in the end hyena "killed" two pillars, luckily for me, the second one fell on her so it killed her, but we found out that hyena is imunne to Titan's laser cannon :-D
And i have never summoned a pet after that.

The annoyance is less than their usefulness. This isn't like Diablo 2 where you had a Necromancer summoning an army of undead and lag-killing a server.
This is why there is a way to map "target nearest enemy" and "target next enemy" to the keyboard... Same goes for a key to select nearest/next usable item. Works well and so far my only "angst" over "pets" is shock at seeing something I've never seen before and haven't summoned myself -- like the first time I saw a Bearded Devil ... whoa.
taken have the will save of a wet paper napkin. i don't think i've seen one that made a save against otto's sphere. they make very amusing little ballerinas, twirling around with one arm up in the air ;) :D
the flayers are bit more resistant... i don't think i've seen one of those dancing yet

In basic quests where it's kill everything fast, pets are fine. In raids where there are specific objectives or kill orders, there is no reason to ever summon a pet.
There's a place and time for them and in general it's never in raids.
And for those people shouting to remove curse the puddings in VOD, nonguild curse pots can be used on others. Do it yourself, I'd rather that they die quickly.

Pets are ok what I would like to see done is make them translucent, I know its not realistic but when I am trying to target with spells etc pets inevitably get in the way.
I say keep pets just make them more functional with groups.

The air elemental is already the same size as a player, and not really a hindrance imo.
The Earth elemental and a few other summons could do with a downsize, though, and something to make them quieter.

I trust you actually tell people this, yes? Or do you just go all passive-aggressive about it?
On topic, while I recognize that pets are useful, some are FAR less useful than others. I hate that lil air mephit becuase he's always in my way. The earth ele? Despised. But the WORST is that darn Hezrou. With him filling my screen, I have to back off nearly 10 full feet and go to top down view camera to see past it as a halfling, which usually carries me out of SA range. I don't do gobs and gobs of DPS as it is, don't make it worse so he can add half of what ~I~ put out. And those defenders? Did Turbine just WANT to tease us Mechanics? Could there BE a worse line for a class that is often (mistakenly) played by new players?!

I personally like summons, though I used to like them a lot better when camouflage used to stick on them.
Hezrou butt in the face wasn't as bad when you could actually see through it, but we got too comfortable running summons, so the Devs decoded to nerf Camo :(
I'd like to see something like a hireling bar for summons/companions, with simple commands like
"Stay" (so I can disable this trap without you butt in my face, or so you don't agro the mobs before we finish buffs)
"Heel" (don't wander off drawing agro, stay close beside me and don't attack unless I tell you to)
"Guard" (only attack something if it attacks me first)
"Bezerk" (go wild and attack everything to you're hearts content...drawing the agro so I can get a sneak attack off)
"Fetch" (****, I died, pick up my soulstone and follow my ghost to the shrine, you can do it, I know you can...good boy)
I mean come on Devs, even the dumbest animal summon has GOT to be smarter then most hirelings. ;>

As a ranger who'll freely hit everyone in the party (even other rangers) with bark... yeah, not gonna happen. I have exactly enough SP to hit everyone with bark (and myself with ram's might) twice, with half a dozen emergency CMWs left over. But pets? They're on their own.
Also: Give warning when summoning devils. Doing Diplomatic Impunity for the first time last week, a devil suddenly spawned right next to me. Practically crapped my pants (and I'm pretty sure my ranger *did*).
To sum up: No earth elementals. No summons that are massively prevalent in the quest. No devils without warning. (Also, no devils in troll areas. It gets annoying to run around hitting everything that's green only to realize you're wasting precious seconds attacking a summoned devil...)
Honestly, though. I like my little pet air mephit. And at least it goes invisible when nobody's around.

Yes, pets could be annoying, so far gone fed up with:
- BIG pets like earth elies, and drow scorpions...
- ...especially when they stops moving exacly where the box is, or on the chest
- Pets same type as mobs aroud, summoning devil in running with devils is just evil.
- pets which cast colide with mine casting like hellhound versus web
- pets which attracts mobs before its time for
- pets do not understand hypno nor fascinate idea
... generally its good to know that while pet could be nice distracion, its not the one "cast it always asap you enter the quest".
Also the best 'pet' is fellow barbarian, and with half compentent party pets are only dead weight.

Well, that is of course you're prerogative.
I usually bark summons to more easily tell them apart from other mobs since camo doesn't work any more, but I usually go into a quest wearing a SP item, so I have a little extra for buffs.

I agree. Often most my screen is a stone elemental or a Hezrou. When I play my Halfling, often most my screen is a stone elemental or Hezrou butt (Assuming they have butts).
I suggested a while back an option to make pets semi-transparent. When the camouflage effect lasted the length of the spell, I would always toss a camo on any summoned pet to make it transparent.

Wow a thread expressing the exact same feelings I have towards some specific summoned monsters, good to know I'm also not the only one with these feelings. :) I hate Hezrous with a passion and miss the days we could dispell them. If two people summons Hezrous, it's like only 5% of my screen that is free. Earth elementals are also annoying, but less than Hezrous. Air eles covers much less screen and are very helpful at least.

I actually LOVE to summon pets just after someone says NO PETS (unless its like part 3 of shroud where I lose a chest, it is totally not worth lost chests - chests should be protected and admired)
on a side note, with my coins I got to add more thraak hound cookies to my aresenal - nothing is quite as much fun as a level 3 group & summoning a thraak hound with my paly & watch the fear set in! or even later groups as long as I have some sort of fear protection... THE HILARITY!

I really only object to pets in two cases -
When they're too big. Drow scorpions come to mind - I can't see the enemy, or even where I'm walking, when a pet is too big and standing on top of me. It's very distracting to the melee fighters.
When they're summoning the same pet as the monsters we're fighting. Seriously, it's frustrating to try and finish off the last undead on the screen and realize it's someone's pet.

Of course there is always something to improve but only minor things in this area. In addition, I want to say that it is nice to see large pets - not only hamsters on my shoulders.
Leave pets as they are. Concentrate on other things Turbine, please.

Here's another thought - pets and hirelings alike... can we have them stop one step to the left or right and one step behind us?
As of now, hires especially like to stop RIGHT on top of my character.

I like pets in three situations:
(a) My air savant's pet air elemental at any time.
(b) Any pet in part 5 of shroud to take the aggro from all four rednames and give the party time to buff up. (I usually use the pale master base skelly for SP efficiency reasons, and Skeleton Bob buys about ten seconds of precious, precious buffs).
(c) Air elementals in PvP arena matches with someone I dislike. Especially if they didn't put any points into balance.

But to each their own I guess.

I am not a lover of pets for many of the reasons already mentioned.
There are a few times when a pet is useful, bur for me I much prefer to quest with real players, not AI controlled pets.
It seems to me that pets have become a "big" thing in DDO, possibly to satisfy players used to a plethora of pets in other generic MMOs. They are on the whole a pita; especially the greasy dog.

earth elementals are the worst because they are wayyyyyyyy too loud, hezrou make quests unplayable because you can't see anything but their big asses blocking the screen. most others are ok. so devs, quieter, smaller pets ftw.
hey dont lie man you like those big asses :P makes you think of tons of songs you can play as that happens. maybe the hezrou just wants you to stare at it :P
